Jang Hyuk hotness and Tamra coolness
Feb. 7th, 2010 01:52 pmFirst off, to celebrate Chuno hump day (i.e. we have half a week until next ep, woe!), have this picture of Mr. Sexy Tortured Slavehunter himself, a.k.a. Jang Hyuk. Adorable baby is a bonus. (I think it was part of some promotion for domestic adoption - I think it's false advertising to imply if you adopt a Korean baby you get someone that fine with it, but whatever works :P) I posted this before but can you really have too much of a good thing?

cleobulle, I watched ep 7 of Tamra the Island with subs and wheeeee, so good! Park Kyu, silly boy, just tell her you like her, and don't pretend you broke house arrest to run after her just because you didn't want to be stuck with your chores. I understand the hesitation - seeing she seems stuck on the foreigner but nothing ventured nothing gained. I continue to like William/Beo Jin for its unworldly sweetness but just like unicorns and rainbows it can't really exist for long (or at all) in the real world. And oh, Park Kyu's mutely speaking angst. MMMM.

She also linked me to 720p versions and OMG - the video quality is amazing!

Date: 2010-02-07 10:47 pm (UTC)Glad you enjoyed episode 7! Ah, Park Gyu...I love it that, even at this point of the drama, he's already so completely head over heels with Beo Jin. And the poor boy is always so flustered that he ends up doing and saying silly things to her. It's especially touching when we know how self-possessed and serious he really is. Intelligent man who is also a ruthless fighter and who falls for a tiny slip of a girl? Can I say hotness?
I'm bursting to discuss his character in detail but that would mean revealing spoilers about his interractions with Beo Jin in the rest of the drama. For the moment, let me just say that I find him very refreshing compared to the usual Kdrama heroes.
I'm sorry. I couldn't time Episode 15 and 16 this weekend. I'm currently franctically translating the Chuno subs into french so that I can watch the drama with my mother, who is coming to visit me next week. Nothing like spreading the word :o) I think she will love it as mush as I do.
I'll try to have the Tamra subs done by the end of the week.

Ooooo, I don't mind spoilers - do tell!

Date: 2010-02-08 01:32 am (UTC)You know how Kdrama heroes (or heroines for that matter) are always slaves to conventions (especially in Saeguks) and to their elders and will let filial obligations ruin any possible happiness for them?
They might want the heroine terribly but a promise
extracted from a parent or some such will prevent them from being with her and they'll manfully bear the pain (the most recent exemple I can think of is Will is snow for Christmas).
Not so Park Gyu. Just when we think he has let his family's wishes and his own self-sacrificing nature get the better of him, he surprises us and fights back. He fights for his own happiness even when he thinks it might be hopeless.
That's what I like so much about him. He might have despaired over Beo Jin's "love" for William but I never felt that he was passive about it. His pain and his anger show through and, in his way, he does tries to keep her for himself.
Basically, the second half of the drama takes place in Han Yang. William has no power to look after Beo Jin there and that marks a turning point for Park Gyu. He can finally act as a protector and, although he was prepared to let her go with William to England before (oh, the man pain, such a beautiful scene in Episode 11!), now that the game has changed, he's fully prepared to step in.
In her clueless way, Beo Jin always asks him about William. And William is always asking him to pass letters to Beo Jin. But Park Gyu doesn't play the martyr. He can get quite cutting with William and flattly refuses to act as a courier between them.
At one point, he believes that William is dead. He does feel guilty for not saving him but I think he's more horrified that now Beo Jin will despise him forever because he fully believes he's responsible for his death. My god, his face when he realizes William is alive and that Beo Jin knew about it! So heartbreaking. I also suspect that a small part of him was actually relieved that William was dead, so that now no one would take Beo Jin away from him. It's never stated in the drama, so perhaps that's just my wild imagination. But I've always felt that there's a bit of a dark side to Park Gyu. And the scene after he learns of William's death is open to interpretation anyway.
Park Gyu would do absolutely anything to give happiness to Beo Jin. His despair over her growing antagonism towards him leads him to make a rash decision to protect her, one that will surely ruin his future, not politically, but when it comes to his happiness. And yet, it's unbearable to him, and the moment he relalizes that all is not lost, he snaps and gains back control of his life. I've never seen a Kdrama hero do that on his own before. They usually just languish in unhappiness until some deus ex machina plot contrievance will save the day (or they all die tragically and we're left clutching a box of kleenex)
And I think I'm rambling! I'll let you watch the drama without spoiling it further. You can look forward to a lot of sweet moments mixed with a ton of angst and man pain with a dash of kick ass Park Gyu thrown in for good measure.

Date: 2010-02-08 07:51 am (UTC)You know I wrote my last message in a daze at 2:30 in the morning and I made the most horrible typos. I don't know if my ramblings made sense.
But I was thinking about it when I went to bed and it also struck me how sexual tension is portrayed in a way that we don't see in other dramas. It's never explicit of course but, to me, it's clear that Park Gyu does desire Beo Jin. He loves her, of course, but not only in a chaste way. The PD took a risk on this one since it's kind of unusual in that type of drama.
Don't expect R-rated lusting (or even PG-13) because there won't be any though. lol. But I'd love to discuss it with you when you finish the drama to see if I'm going bunkers or if others can see it.
