Clearly Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Mainland dramas are not enough for me. I feel like moving on to Singaporean ones :)

I really want to see a Singapore drama, The Little Nyonya, a 34 ep drama about an extended Peranakan family in Singapore, and following the trials and tribulations of its heroine, Yamamoto Yueniang. Ranging from the 1930s to the present day, it's supposed to be good.

I am especially interested in the OTP. Mmmmm.

Shippy MV:

I know I can get an english-subbed DVD on Yes Asia but I don't want to buy an expensive dvd of something I do not even know I will like. Any idea where I can stream or dl with subs?

Haha... I'm from Singapore and this drama raked up highest ratings in 15 years...

It's nice... but there's plenty of loopholes...

Mmm.. Chenxi and Yueniang are nice, but my heart is with Juxiang and Yousuke!

OH.MY.GAWWWWD!!! Why!!!??? :)

I'm from Singapore originally and I dont even watch these dramas when i go home! It was on telly when i was at my parents in December. i saw the trailers and decided to stay far far far away from it! Instead, i got sucked into the brain rot that is Wife's Temptation!

There is a distinct lack of hot men, bootiful women, good acting, good directing and good scripting! I know Wife's Temptation was worse but it at least was good fun with their cardboard villains! And don't get me started on the diction! Argh...it just makes me cringe!

Um, for subs, if you watch it on youtube, there's no need to get specially subbed ones, cos the one on youtube (I think) was recorded from the telly, and they sub it for you when it's shown on the telly...

OH MAN this was SO ridiculously popular in Singapore. Our family got sucked in and we watched it every night - and I would disagree with the above comment, there are some of the best looking actors we have - Jeannette Aw and Joanne Peh are pretty, and this was the show which made good-looking new actor Dai Yang Tian, who plays Yamamoto Yueniang's dad (and the original OTP before Chenxi and Yueniang with Yueniang's mum Ju Hua (or whatever her name is, I forget), who's also played by Jeannette Aw), become the next big thing in Singapore. And there's also Qi Yuwu, the closest thing we have to a Singaporean version of Tony Leung (he has appeared in a number of Asian films), who's Chen Xi.

I have to agree that there is a really lack of good scripting and to some extent, good acting though. The script comes up with Peranakan families which will make you RAGE and according to some of my Peranakan friends, makes a mockery of Peranakan culture. There are random dramatics and a really lack of typical drama karma for a kind-hearted character. And Jeannettte Aw, the main actress, is terribly wooden as an actress. And her Chinese is also very painful to listen to. Qi Yuwu and Joanne Peh are good though.

At least the Peranakan clothes are really pretty, and the food looks good!

Goodlooking actors are yay!

I don't think the pronanciation will be an issue for me as I don't speak Chinese (sadly).

It's sad to know about getting the culture wrong :(

lol, i think i'm very thankful that i stayed away from it. I've peranakan heritage and i dont think i could have endured the pain! I think it was advertised as Xiao Niang Re or something and i dont know, i just cringed when i saw the title!

My full-on perenakan dad just kinda went 'meh!' and watced Wife's Temptation instead!

Haha, scripting is rather bad... But if you leave all logic at the front door (I mean, how often do both mother and daughter, after being thrown off a ship, can float back to the same shores?), it is possible to enjoy it alot.

It has really one dimensional characters, but that succeeds in not really bogging the story down.

Yup, Dai Yang Tian is handsome, even if his acting isn't exactly fabulous, and I have to agree with you, Jeanette Aw can be pretty wooden at times. But she does cry prettily. :)
