Chuno - ramblings on ep 10
Feb. 4th, 2010 10:21 amJust reading the live recaps for ep 10 of Chuno brutalized me.
GAAAAAH GUUUUUUH and all sorts of mixed emotions.
So Keutnomi (I finally remembered his name) - Un Nyun's older brother - was Dae Gil's half-brother OMGWTF UGHWRONG. You know, his choosing to kill DG's family and burn the house down makes even more sense now - it wasn't just that he was protecting his younger sister, but if you think about it - the amount of rage he must have felt. DG's father has two sons - one with his noblewoman wife (i.e. DG) he gives everything to and he lives in luxury having opportunity to study for civil service, wear nice clothes etc. The other one he had with a slave woman so he has no problem making him a slave. Oh, that must have been unbearable for Keutnomi, no wonder he snapped.
Also - before you start thinking Chuno is an 'incest does it best' drama - Un Nyun and Dae Gil are not related, even if Keutnomi is half-brother to both of them - he shares a father with DG and a mother with UN.
And we finally find out what made DG's father decide to beat/sell UN - Dae Gil went and begged his permission to marry Un Nyun. That's romantic and brave but also, in 17th century Korea, utterly insane! I kept wondering why DG's family got so upset he had a slave gf, even if it was a gf he loved a lot - I am sure that happened often. But if he wanted to marry her - oh yes, that's another matter entirely. I am sure his Daddy wouldn't have cared if DG just slept with UN and got 12 kids with her (look at himself - he'd probably think it was adding to the property value and creating more slaves) but marry -- yeah.
And DG finds out Kuetnomi was his half-brother! And that Un Nyun married Tae Ha. My God. MY GOD. He is not going to be able to function. And Keutnomi kills himself on DG's dagger when DG is still shell-shocked. Ughughughugh. I mean, glad as I am DG did not kill him, this is a horrible outcome - DG gets all the blame for the death (from others) but no satisfaction of revenge (but I liked that he couldn't kill him, and he certainly couldn't have killed his half-brother and oh such a mess).
In other news, it's official. Tae Ha and his men (except for Chul Woong who clearly in a foundling) are made from the same tough, awesome, insane cloth. So Tae Ha asked the "traitor" to betray him so all the men get to be made slaves instead of executed and can save the Prince later? My God. MY GOD. (I keep saying this a lot but - )
Also, UN would be a great travel companion - when TH is wounded she treats him, she makes no fuss about blood or danger, when she knows she is slowing him down, she tells him to run ahead etc. She is a perfect mate for Tae Ha. AND HE LEFT HIS SWORD WITH HER WHICH MEANS HIS PLEDGE TO COME BACK OMG OMG OMG. And she holds it and flashes back to their moments together. The girl is IN LOVE. Officially in love. AND THERE IS KISSING WHEN HE COMES BACK KISSING KISSING KISSING KISSING.
You know, I am so bipolar about this. Because on one hand, I am so happy for Tae Ha - he is such an amazing, selfless man and he deserves love and happiness. And UN deserves to have someone who's noble in the true sense of the word and who could really cherish her, and they are also so compatible, from their social status (equals!) to the fact that they are both deep-feeling but reserved people. If the plot left them alone, they could be very happy together.
BUT.
BUT.
DAE-GIL. He loves her so utterly and he lost literally everything because of her. And if not for the accident of timing - if he found her a few weeks sooner, he would still be in her heart and she would still love and want him.
Oh, Dae Gil :(

Also - KISSING!!!!!!! (But I was more impressed by the sword leaving routine. I have a fetish for that sword.)

Date: 2010-02-04 03:39 pm (UTC)And there is something so very Knights of the Round Table about his leaving his sword to signify his return.
I agree, there is NO way out for DG/UN. None. Never was, from day 1, and now we see it 100% clearly. If there will be any ship at the end, it's TH/UN. The question is just how wrecked will DG become - I don't think he can hold it together after all this.

Date: 2010-02-04 03:59 pm (UTC)Everything looks more and more gloomy by the minute. But angsty DG is the win for us? Right?
BTW, I think I made my mind about UN, for a period drama lady she is pretty fine. No crying, no worrying , wound bandaging , kissing when you are back , etc.

Date: 2010-02-04 04:06 pm (UTC)I like UN too - she is not life of the party but she is great as a companion, low maintenance, and useful. She reminds me of a relly good Victorian heroine.

Date: 2010-02-04 06:48 pm (UTC)Also - Chul Woong is completely awesome (YAY!I want him to get back to TH! And be together forever!) and awwwwwwwwww! poor DG. I think because TH is having a happy moment now I want DG to have a happy moment too.
And fighting scenes are getting better and better!

Date: 2010-02-04 06:52 pm (UTC)I can't wait to watch the kissing!
The fighting scenes in this drama are really good. I am pleasantly surprised.
I was thinking - if DG doesn't bring TH back within a month, he is dead because the Minister would kill him (though he may kill him anyway). But that means that to survive he is going to go against his love's husband (or so he believes). Oh, this is going to be so messed-up.

me too! There was a scene with TH fighting CW on the beach - completely stunning!

I think the happy period for TH/UH is about to be over! My "happiest" scenario is that they meet DG and that TH and DG join forces.

Date: 2010-02-04 07:09 pm (UTC)Yeah, I hope DG and TH join forces. I'd hate for DG to become the minister's lackey.

Yes, I so hope they won't go "he is jealous and wants a revenge" route,. This is not DG I love!

Date: 2010-02-04 07:35 pm (UTC)I think DG is going to go really dark, sadly. I think he will snap out of it (he is an antihero, not a villain) but I think for a while he's going to be pretty horrid indeed.

Date: 2010-02-04 07:36 pm (UTC)Re: DG. I am farid he's going to turn pretty dark. I don't think he'll stay this way and he'll snap out of it (he's an antihero, not a villain) but he'll probably do some nasty things for a while.

Date: 2010-02-04 08:09 pm (UTC)OH NO GD! Don't turn pretty dark!!! I hate it when they turn a character I like to the "dark side", even if he repents later. HATE! They always do it in Kdrama to meeeeeeeeeee!

Date: 2010-02-04 07:23 pm (UTC)What a surprise that brother thing has turned out to be too. It's all so very tragic.
And it's official, I'm a die-hard DG/UN shipper. I'm always rooting for the underdog. Actually, I wouldn't mind a TH/UN ending (because I ship them too) but only if DG stayed true to his love for UN. I'm cruel that way and I wouldn't like him to turn to SH. To my mind, it would cheapen what he felt for UN.
Poor DG. He'll truly go crazy and he wasn't that well adjusted before this latest incident either. He hasn't even had the chance to meet UN again after ten years and he has already:
*chased her protector and agreed to capture him
*Shot arrows (indirectly) at her
*Wounded her with his knife
*Indirectly killed her brother
It's all so unbelievably tragic that I can't help but be on his side.
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 07:41 pm (UTC)They are so doomed. So I cling to my ship TH/UN instead - I love them together but also at least they have a chance.
But poor poor DG. When he sees UN again it's going to be the most amazing, painful scene ever.
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 08:14 pm (UTC)That's called self-preservation :o) I think you're wise to throw your lot in with them because Chuno promises to be sufficiently tragic in other ways and will put us through the wringer. Better to save what we can. lol
I'll hold down the fort waving the DG/UN flag. Can't help it. I'll keep some kleenex handy in the next few weeks. I think I'll need them!
But poor poor DG. When he sees UN again it's going to be the most amazing, painful scene ever.
Boy, I can't wait to see that scene. Next week we'll be half-way through the drama and I hope the meeting will happen then. Do you think there's a chance we'll see UN and DG in the same scene together (and actually interacting) in Ep 11 or 12? Or will it be the evil cliffhanger of Ep 12 (or, worse, ep 1something or other)?
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 09:10 pm (UTC)I want UN and DG interacting - it's going to be such a huge emotional scene that it just might overwhelm everything. I am hoping by ep 12. This drama doesn't seem to drag things out.
I keep thinking - if he only found her a month earlier - how different would it all be.
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 09:48 pm (UTC)I keep thinking - if he only found her a month earlier - how different would it all be.
Yeah. That's so tragic.
It's like the fates don't want him to have a measure of happiness in this life. Like you said, a month would have made a tremendous difference for him: UN would still be unmarried and madly in love with him, he wouldn't be chasing TH at the risk of his own life he he fails(and perhaps wouldn't have accepted the job if he had UN to look after), UN's brother would still be alive even if things would have been tense between him and DG.
I feel more sorry for DG than for TH actually. TH has a horrific past but he sort of has closure (his family is dead, his friend is dead) and he has a purpose. DG has been in limbo for the past 10 years, barely surviving. It breaks my heart to see him lose all power to function each time UN is mentioned. Everything is going badly for him and misfortunes keep raining down on him. It's bad news after bad news. There's only so much a guy can take.
But I guess Kdramas are all about that capricious Fate that makes mincemeat out of our poor heroes and heroines.
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 09:53 pm (UTC)It's still a toss between who's had the worse life but while things are looking up for TH (he is now free, has purpose, has friends, has love), things are only spiralling out worse and worse for DG.
It breaks my heart to see him lose all power to function each time UN is mentioned.
It really is amazing - it's like his emotions - love and loss and everything become so much that they literally overwhelm him. Poor guy. I really really wonder what would happen when he sees her again in the flesh. I can't even imagine.
ETA: Yes, a month ago would have been hugely different. I don't know how the confrontation with the brother would have went (but surely it couldn't have gone worse) but UN would have still longed for him, and yes, I believe he would have given up his job. (Would she have wanted him though, even before TH? He is so different now and there is his profession).
no subject
Date: 2010-02-04 10:26 pm (UTC)Yes, amazing, isn't it? I never dreamed that this drama would be so intense romance-wise when I started it. In fact, I had absolutely no interest in it at first. The raw feelings and emotions are extremely powerful. From what I've seen so far, I'm certain that the reunion between DG and UN will grip us by the gut. It'll be taht visceral. I trust the PD 100% on this (not on the final pay-off because I'm expecting an ending à la Hong Gil Dong or worse, on the the journey to get there. It will be fantastic.)
but UN would have still longed for him, and yes, I believe he would have given up his job. (Would she have wanted him though, even before TH? He is so different now and there is his profession).
Interesting thing to ponder. I see UN's love as a kind of all-encompassing love. As long as she could be sure DG had not committed outright murder, I think she would have forgiven him anything, especially since I suspect DG has been helping more slaves than we know of. If he had given up his job (which he most likely took up only in the hope of finding UN again by associating with slaves. It never got confirmed but it's the feeling I get), that would have helped ease the way too.
Still, I have to qualify what I said above. I do believe they could have make it work but it wouldn't have been the pure and idealized relationship we see in the flashback. We can say it was a time of innocence for them. That innocence has now been lost and tainted and can never been regained. A even stronger love could be born out of it but I sincerely doubt that's possible now.
On DG's part, yes. But not on UN's part. Even if there weren't all these problems with her origins and her brother, I think part of her heart now belongs to TH. Even if she still loves DG (we'll have to wait and see), he's no longer the only one in her heart.
And I don't think her upcomming meeting with DG will endear him to her either. He'll be in no state to act all gentle and concerned like TH does. Dude is off his rocker and ready to explode.
But I will be watching for UN's reaction to both TH's kiss and her meeting with DG. She's one of the most reserved characters so far. She's steadfastly clung to her love although she thought he was dead. Perhaps the PD is misleading us with all the TH/UN shippiness. We'll have to wait and see and enjoy the ride in the meantime.

Date: 2010-02-04 10:45 pm (UTC)I can't see how an ending can be more depressing than HGD - is there anything more depressing? Though I suppose they could all be slowly tortured to death.
I agree, they could have worked it out but it wouldn't have been the pure ideal of their old days - they are both too tainted (he much more than she) by now. I wonder if he'd feel some resentment mixed with love - after all it's due to her brother and his own love for her than he has nothing now. Though probably not - he loves her so utterly and I think once he found out about half-siblinghood he wouldn't have even hated the brother too badly.
I agree, that even if her feeling for DG may be strong, she loves TH now. In a way, it's a cruel trick to her - it's as if a woman was a widow (and she viewed herself that way for a decade, that's a really long time), finally moved on only to find out the man is not dead. That's horrible. I mean, imagine what if TH's wife came to life, what would he do?
I wonder - I know DG is in no state to act concerned and gentle but I can't see no matter how he loses it him knowingly harming her in any way. It's just not possible. Though if she sees him try to harm TH that would be pretty bad anyway.

Date: 2010-02-04 07:33 pm (UTC)Looks like Chul Woong is loosing it too. And people are dying in droves. This is such a cheerful drama. ;P
Sigh, I'm glad I watched CitC before this so I know what to expect. I'm still sort of bleeding from that one. But.... CitC ended with a feeling that not all is lost, there is still hope and they did not all die. So.... we'll see.
The preview is again rather interesting. We'll be seeing how Gen Choi and DG met, I think. Among other things.
OMO! How sweet was that kiss?!

Date: 2010-02-04 07:39 pm (UTC)I am actually very impressed with Chuno for making its protagonist so messed-up and so dark, such an antihero. A more traditional, risk-averse drama would make Tae Ha the protagonist.

Date: 2010-02-04 08:04 pm (UTC)Yes, Chuno breaks quite a few traditions and that's why it seems so fresh.
JH is dong an amazing job as DG. I think PD Kwak is very, very good at making everyone show what they've got to the max. Especially the two male leads.

The last scene was sooo heartcrushingly sad for me, that I think I will never get off of the DG/UN ship. *sigh*

Date: 2010-02-05 07:02 pm (UTC)I feel so painful for Daegil.I love him so much!He had suffer so much!!
I know that DG/Un is more than clearly impossible but I think it's the same for UN/TH!When she will find out that DG is alive ,with such a character I think she will not be able to bear to stay by TH side as much as she can't be with DG!!
I think that may be Th will have to choose between his loyalty for his majesty and UN.It's the biggest dilemna than he will have(even if I don't know in which circomstances). But i'm sure that he would have to make his choice. If I remember someone told him that He will accomplish something big!!What can it be except to put his "mama" on the chair!
Like always Chuno is overstimulating my brain!!
Can't even guess what will happen next!!
P.S.: That Keutnomi was his half-brother ,was something Fucking Big!Wow!!
It's not that I dislike Sul Hwa (more the contrary she made me laugh a lot),but I ABSOLUTELY DON'T want to see a pseudo SH/DG!I'm sure she will cause a lot of problems to UN in the future, because she loves DG,and that she would like to take "revenge" in his name.
Re: Daegil FOREVER!
Date: 2010-02-05 11:10 pm (UTC)I am amused by SH but I am a horrible person and don't want DG to love anyone but UN ever ever.
I wonder who would TH pick - he'd be so torn. But I think UN would never let him make the choice (remember how she told him to run ahead when she was slowing him down).
She loves him in part because of shades of DG in him - I wonder what will happen when she comes face to face with the new DG.

Yes, he still loves her after 10 years. But I'm not so sure if they're still compatible with each other. Both - Dae-Gil and Un - have been through so much and they changed.
