You know, I am not convinced by stone-dropping. I have only watched the scene without subs so I couldn't understand it fully , but I still think it is going to end DG/HW way - she cried so sadly when she realised that she dropped it and also when TH was carrying her she was imagining it is DG. I guess this makes me sad, but it doesn't make TH any less awesome. And by awesome I mean ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.
What got me truly confused, however, was the flash-back. OK, her brother wounded DG, but WHAT WAS SHE doing just standing there? I think part of her undying devotion to DG's memory is due to her guilt.
Also - couldn't DG see what is he shooting his arrows at? From that distance? It wasn't that big! This moment felt a bit contrived , I imagine you can recognise someone from that distance, on both sides.
TH is indeed ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. He is bucking for 'most favorite drama character ever' status.
But honestly, I am very shipping-confused. I love both DG and TH and I can see how it can turn out to end with either one or neither and just - confusing. Thankfully shipping isn't the main thing for me in this or I'd go nuts.
but WHAT WAS SHE doing just standing there?
But what is she supposed to do? Rush into the fire? Not to mention what's to prevent her brother from swinging his sword yet again if she does. I think she's basically frozen in shock - if you think about it, in 12 hours or so she has been (a) beaten (b) tied up and supposed to be sold (c) liberated and saw the whole place set on fire/owners killed (d) saw her brother slash her bf with a sword.
I have her brother is kinda crazy - who jumps from 'I am concerned for Young Master burning to a crisp' to 'he must have raped you.' Whaaaaaa? Because yes, people feel tender concern for their rapists. (But then also - how did he think she was going to explain her chest scar to her new husband - wouldn't he realize what that meant). Bro is odd.
I think UN is actually very sheltered despite the events of her life. She always had someone look out for her - DG, her brother, TH. It's impressive she is strong-willed despite it all.
Re: arrows. She was entirely shielded by TH so I don't think he saw her face.
But honestly, I am very shipping-confused. I love both DG and TH and I can see how it can turn out to end with either one or neither and just - confusing.
I am 99.9% sure they will go DG/HW. Although I personally prefer TH I cheer for DG/HW too:
1. I like DG as well, TH is absolutely awesome but DG is hot too. I wonder if they've chosen such a good actor to play TH intentionally - I would have been all the way DG girl if not for the lethal combination of TH/OJH (He is so tall! He towers over HW! And he can act!!)
2. DG/HW are "first love" and if the drama will deviate from the normal Kdrama course "first love is sacred" - won't the world come to an end? I ventured to soompi and the posters there are getting seriously worried. Imagine the outrage if DG/HW doesn't happen?
3. TH has so many things "to live and die for" - young prince, politics, etc. etc. DG - without HW he has been not much more than a bandit for so many years. TH doesn't really NEED HW, DG does.
4. DG loved her for 10+ years. :D
Thankfully shipping isn't the main thing for me in this or I'd go nuts.
Yes, shipping isn't the main thing for me too - I found soompi sthread to be quite annoying because it is all about shipping. Noooooooo! There are bigger and better things going on!
One thing might put me permanently off period Kdramas - if they change the awesomeness of TH along the way. I am so invested in his character I will indeed go nuts. I am fine with him dying, not getting the girl, etc. If he changes - I will not be fine.
But what is she supposed to do? Rush into the fire?
Well, I can just think along the lines "oh, what would have I done?" - I would have stopped her crazy brother, at least tried too. And yes, I would have tried to jump into the fire for a person I love. Yes, she is very sheltered. She is fine for me but she isn't my favourite female character. This is another reason why shipping doesn't really bother me so much in this drama.
Kdramas don't always go first love route - they love 'hero loves jerky girl for years until he finally realizes heroine is his OTP' ridiculously much (see My Girl, Full House, etc). And sometimes 'heroine loves other guy until she realizes it's hero she really wants' (e.g. She's 19, Snow White, A Love to Kill). And then there was Queen Seon Deok which was a period drama whose heroine started out having an OTP with Yushin and ended up having an OTP with Bidam. So I wouldn't rule it out.
But ultimately, I *gasp* do not care too much as long as the story makes sense. I agree, the brewing shipping wars on soompi are offputting.

I won't rule it out completely too - hence 99.9% :D. One of the telling things is that the guy's names go first in the titles, not the names of the main couple. BUT! All the scenarios you describe have one thing in common - the first love is usually a jerk/a crazy girl OR he/she don't love the hero/herouine and miss their chance. Both these reasons are not applicable to "Chuno" - actually by "first love" I mean "mutual strong first love".
Hmmm, but in QSD they had a mutual first love and it didn't work out and she fell for Bidam. And ditto for A Love to Kill which is actually a great parallel - she and her first love loved each other, he was manipulated into leaving her, they were separated but still pining, then during the separation she fell for his brother and when they met again she only wanted the brother :)
A Love to Kill which is actually a great parallel - she and her first love loved each other, he was manipulated into leaving her, they were separated but still pining, then during the separation she fell for his brother and when they met again she only wanted the brother :)
I keep forgetting how against the norm that is in a Korean drama. Usually if the heroine has a first love, she's mostly over it by the time our story starts. With ALTK, she wasn't over it at all, she was still depressed, sad, angry. Dammit I want to rewatch it. One week when I have a nice long vacation, I'm gonna kidnap my friend and force her to watch it with me so that this time when I cry, I won't be crying by myself.
I don't know - I was only watch Bidam parts with QSD but yeah, Deokman and Yushin loved each other blah blah blah blah OTP blah blah blah, then later he eventually married someone else for state reasons, she became queen, and reciprocated Bidam's love. It was basically because the audience was Bidam-mad (and honestly, he was the best thing about that drama).
These things happen rarely. At least in "Chuno" Dae Gil 's character is still getting many followers so I don't think it will be that as well. On purely "this amuses me" level I keep wondering why are they having Dae Gil semi-naked all the time but Tae Ha hardly ever takes off his shirt. :D My personal guess is that they are trying to keep Dae Gil as the popularity lead. :D
I have been quite sad about TH's lack of shirtlessness myself :(
Me too. :D And normally Oh Ji Ho does shirtlessness very well - they hardly have him wearing any clothes in "Fantasy Couple" (which played to this drama's advantage) .
I'm interested to find out how I'll react to LDH. I've read all the complaints about her and her character but I want to form my own opinion. I fangirl her so hard!
I think the complaints are pretty groundless actually. For one, they complain about things she is not in charge of - her outfit is pristine? That's the designer/director's choice - what does she have to do with it?
I love her but when she sucks, she does (see East of Eden). IMO, she's quite good in this. It's not a flashy character but I like her quiet poise.
I think the 'staying neat' thing is just being nitpicky. I roll my eyes at those complaints.
It's the 'useless woman' complaints that have me worried. All this tall about her needing to be saved or there being no use for her in the drama? That I don't like. I hope it's not the case. I love strong women, it's the reason I watch dramas and if her character turns into a weak useless woman, I'll be sad.
I like Un Nyun just fine but you know what I was surprised about - I am watching Chuno with Mr Mousie and he positively loathes Sul Hwa. I mean, active wishing they'd just dump her on the road forever and never come back. I found it interesting because she seems to be popular in fandom but he finds her 'stupid and useless' and causing trouble. I like her myself so it's so weird.
I am kind of annoyed by Sul Hwa too, not as in "I loath her" way , but in "quite useless" way. I think she is popular because the actress was the lead in the other drama by this director - "Conspiracy in the court" . Anyways - she feels like she will be one of these OTP interferers and as she is street-smart she is going to be a big trouble. I liked her at first because I thought her to be general Choi's OTP, but no - she is going to be getting between DG/HW.
Yeah, Mr. Mousie's problem is the same - he can't stand high-maintenance/useless women. If you think about it, who would you rather travel with SH or UN? UN might need to be rescued (but that's external circumstances over which she has no control - it's not her fault her hubby hired psychos) but she will make herself useful, not demand unreasonable things, and while she can't fight (which as a medieval woman is not surprising), she knows how to bind wounds etc etc.
SH will demand things all the time, not be able to cook or clean, steal your money and stuff when she is bored etc. I think she's a travel companion from hell, actually.
But the thing is - I don't travel with her so I don't care. She is entertaining to watch which is all the concerns me. But I think Mr. Mousie imagines himself in place of the hunters and thinks he'd be driven nuts :P (I keep trying to tell him she's half DG's age so she's entitled to being a little silly but he does not agree :P)
ETA: I kind of want Gen. Choi to hook up with the younger inn hostess. I think he likes her a little :) I love DG with SH - not romantically at all, but he is rather incredibly sweet with her, in his gruff fashion.
Hee! I am kind of reaching the age of being a mother of 17-year old in few years time so I look at SH and want to tell her off. :D
She is entertaining to watch so my annoyance hasn't reached high levels yet. One thing bothers me more about the situation with SH- I think it was rather a weak plot move to have her travel with them. Why would they take an unknown woman with them on the "hunting" trip with them when they know they are after a man who isn't going to be an easy catch?
ETA: I kind of want Gen. Choi to hook up with the younger inn hostess. I think he likes her a little :)
yes, I think so too. There were some telling glances there. :D
I am far far from being a Mom to a 17-yr-old (16+ years :P) but I don't know - yeah, she's sort of troublemaking and high-maintenance but I was watching the end of ep 7 when DG is carrying her back and my heart broke for her a little when she asked him "you won't leave me because I am all used up?" That's the kind of question no 17-yr-old (or any woman, for that matter) should ever have to be in a position to ask.
Re: travelling with them. I think it's because DG + Choi know she'll be captured if she stays and they feel bad and WS thought (though he was wrong), he'd have a cook/bedmate on the trip. They get rid of her in ep 8 because she proves too troublesome (until, of course, DG rescues her and brings her back - the guy is a sucker for damsel-in-distress).
ETA: Yeah, I saw those glances. I am glad I was not alone!
yes, I think they are going to make more scenes where one can feel for her as the drama progresses.
until, of course, DG rescues her and brings her back - the guy is a sucker for damsel-in-distress
See! She is going to be an OTP interferer , and where even if HW loves DG it is highly likely that TH will just go all noble and let her go, SH is not the same - she is going to cause much trouble for everyone (including poor little prince).
Oh, I am sure she'll be an OTP interferer, just not sure how much. Her character description basically indicated that she'll be loving DG silently without letting him know because she feels too much shame about being a prostitute to really go after him.
Which I could see.
If you think about it, she basically likes DG (at least so far) because he's both unavailable and safe - he takes care of her despite his grumping (he rescues her from when she's captured by the brothel again and brings her back even if the other two slave-hunters are pissed off, but little things too), and he has no interest at all in her as a woman - and not only does that prove his altrusim (he isn't doing something to get sex in return), but to someone who's always being propositioned/groped/viewed through sexual prism, that must be super-nice.
plus, there is the whole she knows he's been in love with the same woman for 10+ years. That's when she first really gets interested in him - because it's so against her experience where men can't keep their interest for more than 15 minutes. So in a way, she likes him precisely because she can't have him.
I think she is fine. She's morally strong but she can't fight with a sword - that makes sense to me - of course she has to be rescued from battle - it would be bizarre if she was an amazing martial artist. But she does save Tae Ha at least once and she's certainly determined and composed and copes with the craziness a lot better than I would.
LOL. Samsooki, he cracks me up. He only found out about a week ago what OTP means. It is so amazing he only started watching kdramas last year, after all he is Korean-American. He has come a LONG way in a very short time.
I am getting so impatient waiting for subs for 7-8 as I am European, damn it, viikii!!!!
