I have watched the pilot episode of Friday Night Lights, a show that follows a football-mad small West Texas town, and...

I am in love.

I haven't fallen so hard and so fast for an American show dince the pilot of Veronica Mars, all those years ago.

I know nothing about football - I did go to high school in a small Southern town so this show is a mixture of very familiar - the accents and the niceness and pervasiveness of religion (it's like my high school in that way, even if I never paid attention to football) and the strange - the rest of it is rather like science fiction to me - unfamiliar but recognizable.

Mr. Mousie, though shocked I wanted to watch a show about high-school football, wanted to watch the pilot with me and he loved it as much as I did (probably more - he played football in high school and said so much of this was familiar). Now he wants to watch the whole show with me. YESSS.

This ep was an introduction to all the characters. I like the Coach, adore his wife, and think their daughter is a really believable teenager. Smash might be my favorite so far, together with Tim Riggins (so abrasive, so built like a truck, so pretty).

Matt Saracen seems like a good guy (I want to make him soup), I am totally in love with Tim's slutty girlfriend (she is AWESOME) and I feel dreadfully sorry for Jason Street and his gf Lyla.

Anyway, this is SO GOOD. You guys, so GOOD.

Why did it take me this long to check this out?

SCORE!

It really is an amazing show. I've lived in small Southern towns myself and it's such a thrill to see television get it right. (Though I feel very gypped none of the places I lived had an Eric Taylor...)

I can't wait to see who your OTPs are! There are some awesome ones.

I really recognized the Southerness of it all.

No OTPs yet (only pilot) but I do adore Mr & Mrs Coach - they have such a functional marriage.

I knew you would like it!

Fair warning, it does take a dive in quality in S2, but it comes back to full goodness in S3.

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! I'm so happy you're loving it! (I too scoffed and did not want to watch for the longest time and the pilot just *GOT* to me and was so wonderful I had to mainline the DVDs!)

This is so unexpected! My interest in football is somewhere between my interest in frozen catfood and salmon farming - i.e. none.

But this is so very good. And Mr. Mousie tells me the football stuff is spot on.

Hee! Seriously, I think all of us were like "High school" and "football" and "high school football WHAT?" and then we watched the show! (I think it's about human relationships so much more than it's "about" high school or football and that's what makes it so great.)

Also, I forgot to say that this: "I want to make him soup" is also my reaction to Matt (I might have said cookies :P) I just loved him from the very first episode. And I adore the Taylors, and Smash's family (I don't think you've met them yet) is AWESOME.

As I am sure you can tell, I don't watch that many American shows for some reason, but this one hit the ground running hard with every single one of my kinks.

So good!

I LOVE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

I know absolutely nothing about football and never saw the original movie the series is based on, but I've been following the show since it first started airing 3 years ago. It's probably one of the very few TV shows I make it a point to watch -- it's definitely TiVo season pass worthy.

I am a luddite and this no TiVo but yes - I watch no American shows basically, not since BSG and Veronica Mars ended, but this really hooked me.

Friday Night Lights is incredibly good television. Simple as that. So thoughtful, engaging, funny, and real. And it has a respect for its viewers that few shows can match these days. I can't wait to hear your thoughts as things progress!

I freaking love Kyle Chandler (Coach). To death. Partly because he reminds me of my own dad (who was a high school football coach himself for 15 years, with the same heart and scruffy practicality), partly because I carry over lots of warm and fuzzy feelings from watching him in Early Edition as a kid. :)

I know that quite a few of my f-listers like this show. I always mean to check it out but can never find the time or get distracted by something shiny. :)

I do own the movie this is based on though....

YAY I'm so glad you like it! It's an amazing show. Tyra's arc over the show (minus season 2) is pretty great. But Smash's arc over the entire thing is the best.
