Alba & Christensen are Awake
Source: Variety September 1, 2005

The Weinstein Co. and GreeneStreet Films have signed Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four, Sin City) and Hayden Christensen ("Star Wars" prequels) to star in psychological thriller Awake, reports Variety.

The two companies are co-financing the film, which will be the directorial debut of Joby Harold, who also wrote the script.

The story focuses on a man (Christensen) who suffers "anesthetic awareness" and finds himself awake and aware, but paralyzed, during surgery. His young wife (Alba) must wrestle with her own demons as a drama unfolds around them.

"This film will do to surgery what 'Jaws' did to swimming in the ocean," promised producer Joana Vicente.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting in October in New York.

Poor Anakin. He always has such bad medical experiences :D

Wow, so much beauty in one screen - Christensen and Alba! I have a soft spot for Jessica Alba, I never forgave them for cancelling "Dark Angel", especially as I loved the character of Alec and loathed Logan.

"This film will do to surgery what 'Jaws' did to swimming in the ocean," promised producer Joana Vicente.

Oh dear.

Oh dear.

Do you suppose people are going to be out hunting surgeons? :)

I don't particularly like Jessica Alba. I don't even know why. I think she's gorgeous, but something about her acting never works for me.

My dad was calling me the "Dark Angel" before her show was on the air, which has always amused me. *is the original Dark Angel Jessica* /randomness

I'll probably see it. For Hayden. Not gonna lie. :D

You're a mind reader! ;)

That, and you know my fangirl tendencies very well.

This one? *giggles and points* I'm rather fond of it myself!

You can steal it if you want to, because someone sent it to me and I have no idea for the life of me who it was. :) But I'm happy to share!

Lol, so Hayden is now forever Anakin? I still call Harrison Ford Han Solo sometimes! :P

Date: 2005-09-01 04:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yup, he is Anakin from now on, just like Elijah Wood is Frodo.

Date: 2005-09-01 05:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spacedwriter.livejournal.com
I always feel bad for those actors... But then it's fun to see someone like Elijah Wood in Sin City and go, "Frodo! You nasty hobbitses, stop that!" or something equally corny. XD

So, according to the premise of this movie, Hayden's going to be doing much of his acting while lying down pretending to be paralyzed? Hmmm.

much of his acting while lying down pretending to be paralyzed?

Easy paycheck? :D

Oh, I can still see both Hayden and Elijah as other characters and have no problem believing them as someone else (Sin City and Eternal Sunshine and Life as a House are all a proof of that), but it's a lot easier to refer to them by the nick...

I could make a few tasteless jokes about his acting abilities. But I won't.
Yes, easy paycheck indeed. I wish mine were that easy!

Well, so can I, but it's always fun to look at the characters and compare them. Especially with Elijah's characters in Sin City and Lord of the Rings. Talk about opposites!

I actually haven't seen anything else Hayden has done. I'm lazy. And poor. Stupid college, getting in the way of my DVD buying. XP

See Shattered Glass . He's pretty far-off of Ani in that one.

I still haven't seen Life as a House. Ditto on the stupid college thing. ;)

I wanted to see it, but I lived in a semi-small area that didn't have it. And I was too lazy/cheap to drive an hour to go see it.

Laziness should be a major. I would totally get my Ph.D in that!

I dunnow if I wanna see Life as a House. He seems really young, and therefore completely unattractive to me. (In AotC I just thought he was ugly and a really bad actor. /coughs/ So my mind was changed a bit by RotS. Just a bit. /discretely hides her folder of Hayden images/) Maybe one day when I'm bored. Or if it's on TV.

I hate college, but I love it at the same time. Go figure.

He was actually pretty attractive in LAAH: all that messed up vulnerable thing he had going on...

Date: 2005-09-01 11:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] elvensapphire.livejournal.com
I agree. I want to be a lazy bum when I grow up. And I KNOW I could get a Ph.D for that area. :D

Really? AOTC is what made me fall in love with him. I actually thought he was gorgeous and a fairly convincing actor, despite what the critics said. I was a Hayden fangirl all along. *winks* At least ROTS brought more over to the Dark Side. Muahaha! ...Yes, that was a terrible pun.

So far, I just hate it. But that's because prequisite classes are horribly boring and full of busywork.

Yes, I loved him in AotC. But then I liked AotC a lot which I know is unfashionable but I don't care :)

I don't care, either. :) But you knew that, of course. <333

Ha! Me too! I still haven't bothered to think about buying books yet, and classes start on Tuesday. Blech. I'll get them eventually...maybe.

Yeah, well, I was an Ewan McGregor fangirl all along, even with the beard. :P

I like college because it's the "get the heck away from the parentals and get your own place" deal, but not for the "go to class and study" thing. That just sucks.

I kept laughing at "Frodo" when I saw ESSP! That, and Kirsten Dunst was obviously Mary Jane. I mean, her name in the movie was Mary! :P

Surgical anesthesia gone wrong? *meep*

Date: 2005-09-01 04:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
It's funny, because the few times I've been under anesthesia, I am always "will it work?" and the next thing I know I wake up and it's all over.

My best friend is a surgeon so I am going to wait for her and see it with her. Will be fun :D

Now, I've heard about this anesthetic awareneness thing, and was always horrified by the idea of it, but I've also heard they are now trying to take steps to make sure it happens less. (They put extra herat monitors that track how fast your heart is beating, and up the anesthetic dose if the heartbeats go above a certain number, I think.)

However, horrifying as the idea of anesthetic awareness is, I'm not quite sure how you can make a whole movie about it. What's Hayden going to be doing, mentally screaming in pain for two hours? What's Alba going to be struggling with--she won't know he was aware until after the surgery's over.

You mean it's a real thing? *eeeek* But then how do the people suffering from it not go into shock? I guess they are aware but can't feel the pain?

What's Hayden going to be doing, mentally screaming in pain for two hours?

If he is naked, I am not sure I care about what he will be doing :D

Maybe it will involve the fact that he will have a female surgeon who will realize she has Hayden Christensen immobile and out of it in her...ummmm....hands :D

/fangirl

Seriously though, I have no idea. I am sure it will be something other than that because as you said, you can't make a movie out of it...

Not just medical procedures, but surgery and anesthesia in particular. Meeeep.

Not very familiar with Alba - only saw a couple of episodes of Dark Angel, though they weren't bad - but I know I'll probably still end up seeing this for Hayden. (Now that I think about it, I think he's the only actor so far whose name alone is usually enough to get me to see a movie - I generally don't much care who's in what.) Gotta agree with the above person, though - that's going to be a lot of prettiness on one screen.

surgery and anesthesia in particular. Meeeep.

Hopefully they'll go more into psychologcal scare rather than the buckets of gore :)

Re: Hayden. Totally agree. He isn't the only actor whose name (barring something truly hideous about the movie) will make me eager to see the movie, but he is one of the very few.

Date: 2005-09-01 11:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladyaeryn.livejournal.com
Yep. Because even if the overall movie itself is fairly mediocre (LAAH for instance), you still know he's going to give a hell of a performance. I do wish he'd do something besides these smaller films, though - he needs another blockbuster ala Harrison Ford so he's not strictly 'Anakin Skywalker' forever.

Date: 2005-09-02 04:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Exactly. But he is a very good actor and is really young so hopefully he'll have it soon...

Whoa, so Hayden's doing this one instead? Jared Leto was supposed to do it; he even talked about it in some interviews and such. Guess something went wrong or Jared ended up not having the time. Oh well, I don't mind Anakin. :P

Date: 2005-09-02 04:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yes, I guess the original cast couldn't do it. I am happy as I am meh about Leto but certainly not meh about Hayden...

Hayden's an excellent physical actor and he can really convey a variety of emotions just with his eyes, which makes him perfect for this sort of role.

*Also hopes for bare-chestedness.*

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Agree on both counts.

And hey, if there is surgery there has GOT to be barechestedness. We live in hope :P

*Prays the surgery's not Hayden getting his wisdom teeth removed.*
