dangermousie: (Dr Who: Nine/Rose 'plus one' by shootmef)

I plan to see New Moon. Shoot me.

Mr. Mousie and I watched Doctor Who "The Waters of Mars" special and I am in the minority of not being wowed by it. I was actually bored by most of the episode *gasp* Mainly because I found the main dilemma really easily solvable - Doctor could have jjust detonated the whole thing himself and before that taken all the colonists into e.g. 28th century or something where it wouldn't make any difference - contemporary humanity would still think they are dead so everything would go as planned. And if he did it early enough, he could have saved most of them. Plus, with his little alteration, isn't the story going to be all about cool guy with a weird box saving them and their captain going crazy and shooting herself, and not the previous version of her being a hero blahblah so her suicide wouldn't fix anything. I know they wanted to make the Doctor dark but it didn't work for me The preview looked fantastic, though.

I'm with you. I liked the performances, but the plot was slow and frustrating. I thought that the solution would be transporting them to another time or planet would work, too.

Yeah, it just all that angst felt superfluous because if he thought for 0.2 seconds in the beginning of the ep, he would have avoided it.

I LOVED the episode until the very last bit. I thought it made obvious sense to take the survivors to where and/or when they wouldn't be known and let them start a new life. I guess the writers were going for emotional impact although did it ever explain what happened to the other two who ran off?

Yeah - the end was rather a bit of nonsense.

I love Doctor Who with an obsessive and ever growing passion, but most episodes border on the slightly ridiculous. It's worth it for everything else. There were some genuinely scary and genuinely funny moments though.

They are showing some extra preview footage tonight, I think. I. Can't. Wait.

I don't think you're in a minority. I was listening to a radio show after it, a lot of people who watched it thought it was boring. Ending was great though. The people who hardly watched Doctor Who or had never watched it before thought it was great. RTD is not good with suspense really.

The ending was amazing. Everything before it - not so much.

don't worry, you're not in the minority at all.

The FIANCE and I were that close to just switching it off or throwing things at the telly. The preview promised so much and then it just failed so spectacularly. all we seemed to get was him and her running! if i wanted to watch pple running about, i'll watch the london or new york marathon thank you very much. There was no plot or character development to speak of! ARGH!

That's exactly what I thought. I still enjoyed it though, for the most part, once I forced myself to get past that little misstep. I never take DW that seriously.

Adelaide Brooke was a great character.

Adelaide was awesome - I was all for her being a new companion.

I didnt like it either, but I havent been very impressed with most of RTD's episodes. My favorite who eps have all pretty much been written by other writers (usually moffat or cornell with some exceptions) I did like his finale for the first new who series with 9, but after that I've borderline disliked to outright hated everything else he's done. He often chooses melodrama over subtlety or sense, and the story suffers for it. At least this one was better than Planet of the Dead, which just SO silly even for DW.
Also, I am sick to death of Ten's god complex and hated that aspect of his character since day one, it's prevented me from ever fully warming to him (though I dont hate him) it's therefore very satisfying for me if this in fact turns out to be a factor in his death/downfall. Plus I still havent forgiven him for what he did to my beloved Donna. Bastard.

I love RTD's eps but this wasn't one of his best.

I loved Donna to bits and wanted her to be a perpetual companion but he didn't have a choice...

I'm cool with the idea that some things in time can't be messed with it's the last five minutes I found stupid.

For the timeline to be maintained the universe needed to think all the crew died on Mars for unknown reasons. All the Doctor had to do was take them to another time and a different galaxy, detonate the countdown himself and bam he saves them and protects the space time continuum.

I saw the end as the Doctor pointedly taking them home because he is now Time Lord Jesus and the space time continuum can suck it.

Wasn't that the end of S3? :)

Yeah, but I think this was supposed to be the first episode where he realized it...?

Yup. Exactly.

Well, I think it was supposed to be that he was still adhering to the old Time Lord rules and thus couldn't do anything to change a fixed point in time, even something that would seemingly be innocuous (like evacuating everyone to the future) because it could still have unforeseen consequences. The episode probably could have done better at the begging selling the "he truly believes he can't do anything to save them" set-up, because the viewer really does need to buy that in order for the Doctor's crazy-awesome "no, wait, I can do anything I want! fuck time!" revelation to have serious oomph.

But then his switching seems too easy, if he was that set - I am sure they are not the first people he heard die so the sudden snapping - odd.

I kinda thought it was supposed to be too easy, because he's already gone pretty far into god-complex mode, he just hadn't yet consciously crossed the threshold to "I really CAN do whatever I want!" But it wasn't that big of a step. I also really enjoy Ten's god-complex character arc, so I'm probably more lenient with this episode because of that.
