1. Episode 3 of JIN was wonderful. But when is that drama not?

Now I am about to watch ep 4. EEE!

2. Speaking of jdramas, Tokyo Dogs y/n? How is it?

3.I have watched ep 12 of You're Beautiful and the last two scenes (starting when Tae Kyung finds out about pignose meaning and realizes Minam likes him and leading to his uniquely TaeKyungian confession to her) were adorable. So was the Marie Antoinette scene (God, I love Tae Kyung). But oh, my irritation with Minam grows and grows - I wonder how on earth she manages to get dressed in the morning without help, seeing how helpless and dimwitted she is, needing to be rescued from situations a 5-year-old can extricate herself from (the thing with the medicine this ep - really, drama? REALLY?). Her lack of backbone is also severely irritating - meekness is one virtue she has in overabundance. If the meek shall inherit the earth, Minam is due for a whole galaxy.

4. I love my Kindle (on which I get a lot of questions and comments from random people, including fellow commuters, waiters, and tourists) every day. Latest thing I am reading on it is Nickel and Dimed which I do not care for as I find the author intellectually both lazy and dishonest. Lady, I've been poor, on-welfare poor even - what you are doing ain't it - not only can I think of about 10 ways to save money none of which she follows only to then complain about untenability (Geez, you'd have more money to live on if you bought your clothes at Goodwill or charities, lived in a group home, and took furnishings from garbage - either commit to your freaking experiment or do not. There is one scene that made me livid where she decides not to do telemarketing because of personality incompatibility. Bloody ha! They used to pay $10/hour for it because of people dealing with stress - you are NOT doomed to work %6/hr dishwashing job, and another when she doesn't apply for a clerical job because she thinks she can't afford 5 businessy outfits - well, of course not, she bought a $30 of slacks somewhere for work - when you are broke, go to fucking charity or a thrift store or Goodwill), but her "I am slumming it" attitude makes me sick, as is her lack of discussions for built-in progressions in minimum-wage jobs), but it's a good read because it makes me think about various topics, even if only to disagree vehemently. I found the book pretty damn insulting.

5. I am tempted to watch Princess Lulu because pre-Last Scandal/IRIS Jung Joon Ho is the male lead (and the female lead is Kim Jung Eun (Lovers), whom I like). I've heard it was a trainwreck though - so yes or no on the watching? Let me explain - seeing my obsession with JJH it would have to be truly spectacularly awful for me to skip.

6. Apparently Lee Seon Gyun (Coffee Prince, Triple etc) and Gong Hyo Jin (Hello Teacher, Thank You), two of my huge favorites, are starring in a drama which is going to air after Queen Seon Deok. YES!!!! I adore GHJ to bits and ditto for LSG (finally, a leading role!)

7. Finally, the most important item. WITHS2 released VIA subs for IRIS ep 8. Guess who is a VIA member?????? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

I've come to terms with Mi Nam being helpless. It can't bother me if I just don't care.

That being said, I REALLY didn't appreciate Shin Woo guilting her about not showing up for his date. I thought that was pretty out of line, and he's been so weasely about knowing who she really is I just can't take it anymore. Man up and say something or get out of the way. He doesn't have a right to get bent out of shape if she doesn't know what his problem is.

Date: 2009-11-14 09:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] syrenstar.livejournal.com
As it was flash of Shin Woo being a real person/character instead of a cardboard cutout of a perfect secondary male lead I cheered.

He wasn't in the right but at least it wasn't a super obvious plot device like the stylist constantly spilling everything to to Haye or his not telling Minam he knows the truth.

I'd say, pass? I saw a lot of the DCgall crowd give it a try at the height of LS (when they were watching anything-JJH they could get their hands on), but that was the one thing they just couldn't get through. Hope that doesn't pique your curiosity even more... but you could always wait until IRIS is over.

He's had a more successful movie career (in terms of box office, he's in the top 10-20, though obviously that keeps changing), but he also passed on a number of good offers, notably, most famously, Jang Dong-Gun's role in Friend. The irony? Because he's often far too loyal, unlike (I suppose) SaWoo. He had a prior commitment when the role came to him, wasn't willing to go back on his word, and recommended JDG instead.

unless I can tie this with 'hey, here's another fascinating spy/NK officer female role in k-dramas' topic...

Just came across a terrific Eye of Dawn MV starring Go Hyun-Jung (in one of her debut roles, though it's no wonder PD Kim Jong-Hak picked her again for the iconic HyeRin in Sandglass) and Park Sang-Won (whom you'll recognize from Legend). One of these days, I've got to make time for this...

I don't know if these will help assuage your JJH obsession or not but here I go anyway...

* This one's a deleted scene from ep. 15, which takes place when JaeBin comes home from SunHee's and sees his PAs checking out the reactions online. And he's just so wonderful here... after the day he's had, he's the one consoling them, sending them home & thanking them for their hard work. And as if that wasn't enough, once he sees what's out there, and how they're ripping into him, guess what he does first? Call SH to make sure she's not seeing any of this, though he's not so direct, just asking her if she knows how to use a PC, and telling her to stay away b/c all that exposure to radiation is not good for her health, etc. And on SH's side, she's doing the same thing, trying not to worry him with Jimin's reaction, telling him she's just hanging out with her friend (when he asks how she's doing, and whether she's had a chance to talk to Jimin). Pretty sure I couldn't love these two more if I tried...

* The bloopers for eps. 4-6 (which include a deleted scene from their date on the rink, where she's asking him to do something for his first love, though I have no idea what that is); and the bloopers for ep. 7 (the thumb-pricking hustle is cute, but the multiple takes with the towels are the best).

* And last but not least... Remember that sensational scene at the end of ep. 15? I wouldn't mind your input on whether he's crying or sweating here. It's more obvious in ep. 16 (o the things one notices when one watches the x264/720p versions...) So... crying or sweating? I vote he was crying. (PS. *Love* the kiss on the forehead in the ep. 16 take.)

I was so excited about Tokyo Dogs but I couldn't get through it because of Japan's need to make Oguri Shun speak Engrish and their unrelenting belief that black people = thugs and drug dealers.

Okay so I watched the second episode and it's actually sort of amusing. I really like Shun's character but Hiro and his overacting and mugging are annoying. The overall mystery is sort of interesting too.

What I want to know is why, when they have two lead actors, one of whom speaks English and one does not, they pick the lack-of-English one to play the guy from America. Why?

Someone over on soompi pointed out that Tae Kyung is answering her question in episode 7 when he tells her he likes her. Minnam doesn't bother me that much - the ISWK2 heroine bothered me much more - I think TK likes being the big man looking after her. He probably needs to be needed, after the way his mother treated him.

I just watched episodes 9-10 of You're Beautiful since the WithS2 subs came out this evening, but I've thoroughly spoiled myself for future eps as well. This is my drama of the moment, since I'm in the mood for light fluff, but I'm saving IRIS for later.

I don't really have any problem with Mi Nam. Sure, she's really dim, but it fits this drama. And her pure and simple personality gets through Tae-Kyung's barriers. It's also evident that he needs someone to protect and to take care of, but hasn't even realized it himself before meeting Mi Nam.

And I just want to stab his mother in the face with a whole settings worth of rusty forks. Ugh! She's horrible!

I saw the first episode of Tokyo Dogs and wasn't that interested in seeing any more of the drama. So nay from me.

I will tell you this now - NEVER watch Princess Lulu. It starts off alright, but descends into a train wreak quickly. You know a drama is bad when the actors actually say they didn't understand it or their characters.

You know, I adore You're Beautiful, but I agree that MN is really naive. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she is: clumsy, was raised by nuns and never really left the orphanage/church until now, and knows next to nothing about romantic love, which is why she is so dim when it comes to the guys. She's simple, but it works for her character.

Oh, IRIS is one I am waiting to watch. I want to wait until my winter break though, as I want to watch it with out having to worry about tests and finals. (JIN is also on that list as is TOKYO Dogs - I hear it is a good show, but nothing life changing. A typical Japanese comedy-drama about cops and a mystery)

Yeah, I want something simple and jdramaish, so once I finish Love Shuffle, I am watching Tokyo Dogs.

Tokyo Dogs wants to be a fun detective drama - till now with a hint of tragic, since the main girl has amnesia and is most likely a member of the organization Shun's and Mizushima Hiro's character go against.
To tell the truth, what I didn't like was how Shun talked english - in that way it would have been better if they make Hiro the FBI agent; and the other thing that bothers me is Hiro's character is way to hyper. Shun is the reserved and cool agent, while Hiro plays the hotheaded detective from Japan. Somehow I have the feeling that it should be reversed, but that may be just me.

Date: 2009-11-16 07:52 pm (UTC)

That is bizarre that they didn't pick Hiro to be the English-speaking one.

btw, hate to be a pest, but what was the name of that office jdrama you recommended - I can't seem to find the post.

2. Tokyo Dogs - like it so far, but this mainly because Oguri Shun looks good with a short haircut.

3. I dunno - Mi Nam is just a cuter version of the Yi Nok from "Hong Gil Dong", only Yi Nok was trying to be street-wise (always with disastrous consequences and without much success) and Mi-Nam is much younger and a nun (thus has an excuse to be naive). It doesn't bother me as much here because TK doesn't call her stupid (as a pet name) but I still see this as a minus. It seems that Hong sisters just like this accident-prone type - the lead lady from "My Girl" was also something of this sort, she was a successful swindler (unlike Yi Nok) but she also was accident-prone.

5. I have watched Princess Lulu (gosh I forgot about it), but I didn't like it . This to say, you might like it if you really want to watch something with JJH, there wasn't anything of the things you usually don't like. Also you liked "Worlds Within" and "Worlds Within" gave me the same feeling of "the actors feel distanced from their roles"..

Date: 2009-11-16 07:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
See, I thought Yi Nok WAS street-smart. She never got into truly horrific trouble - and she wasn't such a fragile wilting flower into the bargain. I don't mind cheerfully dumb, I wouldn't even mind agressively stupid but naive, silly, weak, and always helpless (she cannot get glue out of her hands or medicine out of her eyes - my GOD) is not my thing.

Re: Lulu. I know WW was a divisive drama but I know people who loved it really loved it. I have yet to find anyone who liked Lulu so I am almost tempted to check it out because of trainwreck syndrome.

She never got into truly horrific trouble - and she wasn't such a fragile wilting flower into the bargain

yes, but she never had any success either. That makes her not stree-smart, but street-stupid. Also, it is a bit hard to believe that someone who can't make a step without accident as Yi Nok could have survived on the street, thus adding the other layer of questionable writing.

I wouldn't even mind agressively stupid but naive, silly, weak, and always helpless

you see I rather don't mind weak physically or accident-prone (if there is some reason to be so - as in bad health, very young , sheltered, motherless pheasant girl) but strong in her heart like Min Nam who is pretty tough as not to complain about her lot, be always cheery and always try to protect TK and the other boys. There are different layers of strength and this type of strength does for me just fine. Yi Nok was the same, but in the case of Hong Gil Dong it is not the character of Yi Nok, but the way Hong Gil Dong treated her that I don't like. I would have been fine with her character if not for the constant "stupid girl".

Also, I can relate to gluing your fingers together - I did it TWICE myself.

I have yet to find anyone who liked Lulu so I am almost tempted to check it out because of trainwreck syndrome.

I want you to watch it now - I don't think I have really reached the train wreck parts, I only watched about 8ps of LuLu. And I might even like WW in the future - who knows? I haven't seen too much of it. It just gave me a very awkward feel..

See, for me it's not how the heroine is treated (though as you know I had no problem with GD's treatment of her) but how she acts herself - and I guess I had a different perception of Yi Nok's ability v. Minam's. It just for me it's a whole other level to be so helpless as to not be able to get out of the way of the spraying bidet or not being able to unglue one's fingers or not getting off the stage when wet - I really think Minam is the most helpless heroine I've seen in any drama, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, or Mainland.

Date: 2009-11-16 08:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
I dunno, I remember Yi Nok falling over several times per episode (how did she survive?) too and some other accidents?? As in not able to roll a piece of fabric back together and stepping all over it whilst doing it (who would be rolling a piece of fabric one is standing on?) and Emo Prince having to rescue her? I see it as the type Hong sisters like, I started "Fantasy Couple" recently and the heroine seems to be accident-prone too.

But as I said, ability itself is not that important to me, as long as the heart is strong. Both Mi nam and Yi Nok always want to help. My most hated type is whiny types, general "woe is me".

Oh, I forgot - some people loved LuLu too, this is how I found it - from the favourites lists of aja-aja maintainers.

I think another problem with YAB for me is that it all revolves around the romance - in HGD, romance was one of the lesser things for me (even though I did like it as I liked Yi Nok and don't care for Minam) - I found comedy/rebellion/politics stuff even more interesting. In YAB, I can't get away anywhere from 'omg everyone loves Minam' stuff which, seeing I find Minam irritating, just drives me up the wall. I am definitely in the minority with that one. Maybe I am just too old - I can't relate to any YAB characters, to be honest.

Date: 2009-11-16 09:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexandral.livejournal.com
I understand this! HGD did indeed have a very decent period-drama stories.

I am enjoying YAB immensely, but if I have to be fair I will give it 7/10 (if nothing goes wrong). As a simple romance drama it is great and every character is very well thought through and all the dialogues are awesome. But it is what it is - a simple romance drama. I love TK the most, his character is awesome.

There is one bit of additional value for me in YAB - I find it HILARIOUS. Non of Korean humour never did anything for me, I always was cringing inside. This is a very first drama that makes me laugh, to a point where I am roaring with laughter. Some of the funny scenes are just priceless and very non-cliche and JGS does a great job at being funny. Take the scene with the pig - I LOVE THAT ONE.

It is funny. Hmmm, I think HGD is the only kdrama where I loled out loud. Most Asian dramas don't have my sense of humor (the only ones I found funny were HGD, Gokusen, My Boss My Hero and Mukodono. That's it)

I started Princess Lulu a long, long time ago, stopped around episode four planning to pick it up again (thinking it could only go up) and never did. It was in my early days of Asian dramas where I was voracious about watching and could get through pretty much anything. I don't know if that speaks volumes or not. I'm not sure if it would be your cup of tea. It is trainwreck-esque but not in an entertaining way. Again, I've seen only a bit of it so I don't know if it got better.

Apparently Kim Jung Eun wanted to quit in the middle of it cos she couldnt understand the direction the script and her character was going in!
