This line is from the best book I've read this year, Rupert Holmes' Where the Truth Lies. Felt like using it.

This is going to be a big grab-bag of a post because I am going away for a vacation and won't be back until the beginning of January. Happy (early) Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, New Year or any other holiday of choice to those who celebrate! If you'll allow me to be sappy for a moment, last year, I knew only two people on my friends' list ([livejournal.com profile] aliterati and [livejournal.com profile] katranna) because I didn't even have an lj. And this year I got to meet all of you really fun, interesting, clever people through lj. Yeah, it's mushy, but reading my friends' list makes me happy way too often to mention. So thank you.

1. You know this period of time when you know that you can't save yourself from falling and the best you can do is try to twist in such a way so your bruise won't be too bad, but you haven't yet hit the ground? Time really does slow down, or more accurately, you become much more aware of each instant. Unfortunately, what you are aware of is frustration and anticipation of pain. Yuck. Yes, for future reference to self, watch out for ice on the sidewalks.

2. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's out now. Go see it. Go see it even if you have to rob a bank to do it. It's a film noir homage and parody that I fell madly in love with and which is in my Top 5 of the year. It's post-modern and it's old-fashioned. It's intelligent, twisty, funny, witty as hell and surprisingly tender and romantic. Any absence of marketing on this movie is a crime. And no matter how outrageous or clever it gets, you never really feel the shellacked indifference to violence of a Tarantino movie, primarily because of the look in Harry's eyes (Harry is played by Robert Downey Jr who should stay off drugs, please, because I love him.) Oh, and Val Kilmer is the coolest gay private detective ever. The Flick Filosopher [sic] said it better than I can in her review here. Why are you still reading this? Go buy a ticket!

3. I know in Smallville the smooshed term "Clexana" refers to the Clark/Lex/Lana triangle (barf) but every time I see it, I think it refers to menage-a-trois instead, and it suddenly becomes a heck of a lot more interesting, especially since I have a hilarious picture in my head of Lana horrifiedly realizing that the boys are sort of more interested in each other and abandoned her to fend for herself while they get it on...heeee.

4. I ended up watching a bit of Spiderman 2 last night. This still remains my favorite superhero move ever. Tobey Maguire is totally dorkily adorable and I just want to feed him chicken soup and mother him, which is bizarre. Plus, I am a sucker for a superhero with just one love interest. And I am a sap but I love MJ coming into his apartment at the end. Sigh. Also, it has the coolest opening credits ever (and I noticed that two out of three screenwriters are the people responsible for Smallville. What, they spend all their good ideas at the movies?). Harry Osborne still hot. Too bad about future evilness.

5. While idly browsing the One Tree Hill thread at TWoP I learned that Haley and Nathan (the only couple I liked on that atrocious show) had, so far this season (mind you, we are only into ep 10 or so): had Haley sign the divorce papers with "I love you" and come back to win over her broken-hearted husband, who still loves her but won't trust her. He wants her to work with the guy who lured her away last time to see if he can trust her and Nathan's evil dad Dan pays the guy to seduce her. But it didn't work (direct quote from TWoP: "he kissed her whilst pretending to be Nathan in a batman costume.") Now Dan is being even more evil and abusive (which I thought wasn't possible) so Nathan turned to Haley for support and they ended up having hot sex. The kicker? Nathan and Haley cannot be older than 17! Realism? What's that? Gosh, I simply must watch. So bad and so irresistable.

6. I finally ended up watching all the Bolly movies I bought except for Virrudh. I enjoyed Pyar Main Twist about an older pair of windowers who rediscover love. Fun to see Rishi and Dimple together after 30+ years. Plus, Rishi, after he got over the early 90s phase of sweaters and romancing on screen girls half his age is quite a delight to watch (the only time I've ever found Rishi uber-hot though was in the 1970s Amar Akbar Anthony. When he sang that quawali to Neetu, I felt like going over to him. The rest of his movies in the 70s he was dorkily cute). Kyun Ki unfortunately wasn't so good. There was a good idea buried in there somewhere and Salman was very good but the movie was a horrible mess.

7. Saw Battlestar Galactica promo yesterday while flipping channels. Cannot wait. Being a pathetic fangirl, the K/L hug got me all giddy, though I am sure it won't ever lead to any roses and puppies. Husband's reaction? "Are they putting paddles on Apollo's chest?"

8. I was rewatching bits of Revenge of the Sith and when Anakin pledges himself he is swaying on his knees, from despair, or horror, or trying not to realize what he is doing, and he cannot look anywhere, at Palpatine, at himself, at anything. It's horrifying.

9. Go read [livejournal.com profile] lazypadawan's hilarious "Sithmas" write-up right here. Seriously.

Or Hayden had low blood sugar that day.

I kid, I kid. I found a great icon of that the other day that I must find again and employ.

so Nathan turned to Haley for support and they ended up having hot sex.

Because in WB world, this is an inevitable process. It's like the sun rising or the moon waxing or waning. I personally feel that One Tree Hill is a cheaper version of The OC, which is a talent in its own right to be able to claim that.

Really should have eaten his doughnuts!

Yes, I want to see it!

It's like the sun rising or the moon waxing or waning.

Exactly. Of course, that means that it's the lot of understanding supportive women to end up with a LOT of STDs.

ROTFLOL. My family lives in a small South Carolina town and I am shocked to discover that nothing like that goes on in their neighborhood. Really. I mean, unless NC is so different from SC, but it cannot be. WB wouldn't lie. Because it appears on the WB every small town is possessed of delicious soapy secrets, yet my parents' choice of residence seems to have escaped that!

You mean you don't have half clad basketball players knocking up cheerleader looking girls and being tortured by evil parents and love pentagons that no one really knows who's in love with who? You mean that doesn't happen?

Icon!!!

No, and I went to high school in another small town (in Central VA) and we didn't have that either. What's wrong with the places I live? Heeee.

I must say that that scene was probably the best in the entire Star Wars prequel series. I know it was the best acting Hayden did in the entire movie. It seemed like Hayden was finally an advanced enough actor to get a little out of Lucas's horrible dialogue. I must say I never loved Anakin more than in that scene.

Oh yes. Yes yes yes. Though I always have to fight the urge to turn away because you see a person disintegrate in front of your eyes, a person you like and sympathize with.

I think it was because Anakin had finally become a likable guy. I hated Cute!Obnoxious!Anakin and I didn't like Whiny!Anakin at all. He was finally mature enough to make sense, you could tell he loved his wife and when he threw hissies now they had a basis that you could relate with. Anakin fell when he was finally likable, which is possibly why that scene worked so well.

I think it's because the basis for his fall was so understandable. Because I cannot honestly say that if I was in his position I wouldn't do the same. And that's what's so good about it.

A pity he grew up so much only to fall.

Have a great trip and a wonderful holiday! See you next year!

1. Yes. I know the feeling, but from falling off horses rather than slipping on ice (thank the gods, I *hate* ice, yeah California!). Farther to fall, more time to think about it...

9. OMG! That was hilarious! Thanks for the rec :-D

Thank you!

I rode a horse once, because high school bf's parents had a horse farm. It was kinda fun, but I never got a chance after that. Tried camels a couple of times though which was fun :P

Farther to fall, more time to think about it...

Ouch.

God, I love your VM icons!

Yeah, KKBB is awesome and I have no idea why we didn't get any marketing for it at all. I mean, literally, none. The only reason I know about it is because I read FF regularly and because [livejournal.com profile] aliterati saw and liked it. Ridiculous.

Happy Holidays!!!!

Spiderman Two was really good the first time I saw it, but I couldn't stop snarking on it the second time.
Harry Osborne still hot. Too bad about future evilness.
And too bad about the complete lack of plausible facial expression.

I just bought the Serenity DVD (speaking of old obsessions of yours) and it was actually way better than I remember it being. Considering I remember it being fantastic and awesome, it was pretty amazing. (Also, about five of the deleted scenes are Mal/Inara moments. She had a scorching affair with a pirate!)

Oh, is the DVD out already? Argh! Must. Buy. Mal/Inara? Gleeeeee.

too bad about the complete lack of plausible facial expression

I disagree but ROFL.

4. Though I have a great nostalgic love for the original Superman movie, and was pretty darn impressed with Batman Begins, I think when it comes right down to it, the Spiderman movies are my favorite superhero flicks. I haven't seen 2 recently enough to say which I liked better, but I really just loved Tobey Maguire for the part. I don't think they could have gotten anyone who better satisfied my notion of Peter Parker. (I'm a little iffy on Kirsten Dunst as MJ, but she'll do, I guess.)

8. I took it as sort of a horrified resignation - as though at that moment he both fully understood the evil of the situation and decided it was already too late for him. (And he believed that, believed that he was irredeemable and unable to turn back, until... well, you know.) It was just fabulous. I loved that scene. Guh.

Yes, I love TM as Peter. He has a certain sweet dorkiness that really fits. Love, love, love. It's really funny because I saw TM in "Wonderboys" and I didn't see what the fuss was because I thought "he looks stoned" (As my husband never tires of pointing out, he was supposed to be that way in the movie, but I just thought: come onnn!) Then saw Spidey and went: "whoa. He was acting in Wonderboys. He isn't stoned" Yeah. I can be dense sometimes.

It was just fabulous. I loved that scene. Guh.

Oh yes. Best scene in SW IMO.

The Spider-Man movies are awesome. I just don't know about Topher Grace playing Venom, though. I'll keep a wait-and-see attitude there.

I also like the X-Men movies.

Is it OK if I friend you?

Hmmm, I liked Topher Grace in "In The Company of Men" and the Spidey people have been very good with casting so far, so I hope he'll work.

I like the X-men movies, though I like the second one better than the first.

Is it OK if I friend you?

Yes, of course. I'll friend you back!
