In light of my instinctive shudder over and active avoidance of the upcoming Smile You because it stars Lee Min-Jung who played Gu Jun Pyo's fiancee in Boys Over Flowers, I was thinking:
Has an actor ever portrayed a character you disliked so much that you never wanted to see them in another drama?
That doesn't happen to me too often - I loathed Park Yong Ha's whiny wannabe rapist in Winter Sonata but gladly watched him play the amazing protagonist of Slingshot and swooned all over the place. I never had any hesitation of checking out that drama because he was in it. I lothed Han Eun Jung's scheming, possessive secondary girl in Full House but am fangirling like mad over her character in Seoul 1945 (from what I have seen so far) and it certainly was no deterrent to me to check out the drama because she was in it - rather I was curious to see how she would do in a leading role. Park Hae Jin's oddly magnetic but utterly heinous character in East of Eden only whetted my appetite in seeing him play the lead in the upcoming Passionate Enterpreneur. Park Si Yeon's Tennis Girl was an object of my utmost loathing but I loved her in Slingshot (and enjoyed her negative character in La Dolce Vita as well).
It does happen sometimes - it took me years to get over Uhm Tae-Woong playing the repulsive Byun Hakdo in Delightful Girl Chunhyung. Then I watched Mawang because I wanted to see Joo Ji Hoon and the story appealed and I fell madly in love with UTW.
But other than that happily overcome case, the only ones I feel that way are Lee Min-Jung and Gu Hye Sun, both from Boys Over Flowers. I think it's different than the case with Uhm Tae-Woong though. I hated his character in DGCH but I had no objections over his acting - he did a good job, perhaps too good. With the BOF actresses it's the combination of the characters I grew to despise (and the reflected irritatingness of the trainwreck that was BOF) and the fact that I honestly disliked their acting. Even when I liked BOF and Jandi the way she was in theory, I thought Gu Hye Sun was an atrocious actress. One of the worst I've seen as a kdrama lead. LMJ was as actively appalling - both flat and ridiculously over the top (it didn't help that BOF truly died when she appeared on the scene). Neither made their character resemble anything close to an actual human being. There is a way to play a manga, overexpressive character and make them feel real - see Yoon Eun Hye in Goong. But that was not the case here. I thought they both played characters I grew to loathe, couldn't act, and I do not find physically good-looking. Pass...I now actively avoid dramas with them.
Ryu Shi Won is also this way - I disliked his character and his acting in Beautiful Days. I've never heard of his acting magically improving since BD, so when you combine that with my notable lack of belief in his charisma or good looks, I do not see why I should check him out.
So basically, for me - appalling character is not enough to put me off an actor normally. Neither is appalling acting. But combine the two and add lack of physical appeal? Buh-bye forever. (Then there is the case where I had nothing against a character but the acting was so bad I now know to avoid that actor - Son Dambi and Dennis Oh come to mind).
My nightmare scenario is Gu Hye Sun starring opposite Kang Ji Hwan. Because then I will have to watch.

Date: 2009-09-14 03:39 pm (UTC)I'd like to say no, but I don't think that's entirely the truth. There have been actors I've despised in several dramas (IE secondary girl in Full House) but I've seen them in other dramas and don't really mind them.
The one that might fit this the most is Tennis Girl from My Girl. I was annoyed completely by her, but I don't think it was the character, I think it was her acting. I was left with a 'meh' feeling about her and thought, maybe it was just this one drama. But then I saw her in another movie, A Love and she was, once again, completely 'meh' in it and I realized it wasn't the character, it was definitely the acting. She's improved a small small amount, but I still think she's only got a few facial expressions.
Oh! And Gong Hyo Jin and Gong Yoo. I saw them first in the drama Hello! My Teacher which I DID. NOT. LIKE (first drama that I never finished) and they've kind of been tainted since then. I mean, I'd like to watch them in other things but every time I get tempted to, I just can't. GHJ seems like an good actress too, which is too bad that I haven't seen anything of hers that I liked.

Date: 2009-09-16 01:45 am (UTC)I actually loved Byun Hakdo in DGCH. I think the overall desperation was a little unrealistic, but I loved the romantic view it put on obsession. He was a character that I felt impossible to hate because I felt so sorry for him.
Ueno Juri's character in Last Friends annoyed the crap out of me. She was also moody or angry. But after some coercion, I watched Nodame Cantabile and I loved it. So I guess it's a character ruined the actor, but then another role saved him/her.
