dangermousie: (Damo OTP by miss-dian)

It's sick how excited I am for Chuno. I can't even concentrate on what I am watching, because I just want to watch Chuno instead. This is sort of a problem, seeing that it won't air for 4 months, at the earliest.

But that is really all I can think about. It does not help that not only is it going to be manageable length (24 eps) but that everything I read about it, every bit of news, gets my anticipation higher and higher. It's making me anticipate another Damo - both because of class issues but also because I was obsessed with Damo.

I find it interesting that all the main characters seem to be "out of place", either because like Jang Hyuk and Oh Ji Ho, they have been forcibly and violently displaced from their privileged place in society to some low depth, or because, like Lee Da Hae, they are disadvantaged that have been suddenly and unexpectedly raised up. I like where the story can go with this unstability. (Once again - shades of Damo's displacement, with both Ha Ji Won and Kim Min Joon being formerly noble children forced into slavery/rebellion and Lee Seo Jin forced to drift between two worlds, as an offspring of a slave and a noble).

I also love that for such an understandably male-heavy cast (the story deals with rebellion and slave-catching, which were, I am sure, largely male activities), the women characters they have seem so intriguing.

First we have Lee Da Hae, in an oddly dual role. She is a slave in Jang Hyuk's household. They are in love with each other but she runs away/disappears (it's unclear which). It might be connected to the night his house burned down to the ground due to actions of a vengeful slave (not her, obviously) and his family died, it might not. All I know is she resurfaces some time later, living as a daughter of a noble family and under a different name. I wonder how she got to that position. And I know that Jang Hyuk is still in love with her and searches everywhere for her. The inherent tension in that relationship is fascinating - he might love her but he is now a slave-catcher by profession and she is, for all intents and purposes, not only a runaway slave but a fraudulent pretender to a station she does not possess. If her true status is revealed, she loses everything - so his very presence is a danger. And if she is undiscovered, she is far out of reach of someone formerly noble but currently impoverished and little better than a slave himself.Even if he would not betray her (who knows), the tension between what he does and her very essense is enough to doom any relationship. And, of course, there is an issue of why she did not try to find him herself - she might have loved him, but it couldn't have been happy to be the family slave. That's got to bring resentment to the table in a major way on both their parts (for him because of her leaving him, for her because of the fact who he was).

That is so very wonderfully messed up.

And of course, there is the fact that Oh Ji Ho's general-made-slave falls in love with her. I wonder how and why they meet. I wonder if, because of her past, she is kind to him and that is why he falls in love with her. They are basically two sides of the same coin - she is a slave who is turned into a noble, precariously. He is a noble who is made a slave, unjustly.

I don't know if she will continue to love Jang Hyuk or fall in love with Oh Ji Ho. Does it matter? It's going to be wonderful either way, and seeing that my usual predictor for an OTP (the guy who has the most miserable past gets the girl) won't work here, as both the men as so messed up, I predict it all ending in a pile of corpses.

But then there is also Kim Ha Eun as Sul Hwa, the other major female character. I find her endlessly fascinating - she is the one woman in Jang Hyuk's slave hunter gang. I am not sure whether she possesses fighting skills or is someone who does domestic-type stuff. What I find interesting is that, like the rest of the characters, she is someone displaced and forced into despicable actions by her surroundings. Before becoming part of the slave hunter group, she used to sell herself to survive. No wonder she sticks with the group - it's better than what she had before. Apparently she falls in love with Jang Hyuk but won't act on it because of the whole "used to be a whore" issue - whether she feels unclean in general or because trauma associated with men. She sounds so very damaged and so interesting. I wonder if she allows herself to like Jang Hyuk because he is so monomaniacal about Lee Da Hae, she feels safe.

Oh, I am speculating speculating speculating and the drama isn't even anywhere nearing airing yet. I am going to drive myself bonkers.

I think I am off to watch Conspiracy in the Court before I drive myself completely insane.

I don't care I'm going to be shipping LDH and JH. They sound like the OTP although first love OTP's rarely get the luck.

I'm excited for a new LDH drama!

I am too! It's been too long (if you don't count the mess that was her role in EoE).

First OTPs often get the luck in angsty dramas - Spring Waltz, Snow Queen, Winter Sonata, 90 Days, TODAW etc.

I totally fangirl/gushed about your speculations in soompi.

The characters are all so lush, complex--- demented! I like it!

I am scared of being a Sul-Hwa and Dae-Gil shipper, I ALWAYS root for these female social outcasts who love silently. I KNOW she's probably never gonna get into Dae Gil's sexay slave hunter pants, and I think that's what makes it so appealing to me. The comfort and solace she'll find with him, will be quite enough. The bittersweet longing and friendship... I can see it already.

I loooove Lee Da Hae but I already have empathy for Sul Hwa. LOL.

With that said though, I am so psyched that the female lead here is basically Ms. Duplicity... she will play two roles, two very different personalities and will have these two men fall in love with her. I cannot wait til the shit hit the fan.

Lee Da Hae in a drama... yay! Shhh... in my lalalalaworld East of Eden never happened that was a drone posing as her. LOL.

I have a sneaking fondness for H!M. It had so much sweetness and quirkiness and potential. A slightly better scriptwriter (they made LJH so nice Da Hae came across as unrealistically bitchy for suspecting him), a different costume designer (WTF? why does she dress like a five year old?) and a director who would reign in his cast (LDH can do quirky or charming or weepy in her sleep - it takes a certain kind of directing talent to ruin those by having too much of each) and it would have been a gem.

It's still not bad for a rainy night, to watch with a mug of tea and cookies.

I would normally root for Sul-Hwa but not here as:

a. LDH/JH is basically a drama OTP dream for me, after Robbers (Robbers might have been uneven but they were a killer OTP in that one. *melts just thinking of them*) She is so very fragile-looking and feminine but can come across as with a core of steel and Jang Hyuk is so very...macho. And good at being a cynical and wounded mess desperate for love. Must stop just whipping myself into ever more of a frenzy over Chuno.

she will play two roles, two very different personalities and will have these two men fall in love with her. I cannot wait til the shit hit the fan.

I can just imagine the confrontation(s).

in my lalalalaworld East of Eden never happened that was a drone posing as her

LOLOLOL. I loved EoE but it was a wildly uneven drama and, unfortunately, her character was part of the "not so good" parts. I ended up being a satisfied SSH/Lee Yeon Hee shipper in EoE so on one hand I can't complain, but why they cast someone like LDH and then basically waste her utterly is beyond me. I started watching EoE expecting and anticipated a love story involving LDH but by the time her character left abruptly with no love story or any closure, I was happy she was gone - WTF! That's not good writing.

... they did have plans for her, she signed up for a totally different role and ended up as really the most useless character in K-drama history. You can totally edit East of Eden, take her parts out and still have a story.

That's what happens when the writer walks out in the middle of the project.

Lee Da Hae was severely mismanaged back then, it's a good thing she left her small company for Rain's company.

dangit. I really hope Sul Hwa won't sway me!

I am also annoyed that Oh Ji Ho's rugged makeover is working on me. I'm such a shallow person.

I'm worse.

gurl, I was going, "Oh Ji Ho? He has no screen charisma, he's got a body of a greek god but lacks any kind of appeal to show it off, he has zero depth, he always plays charming losers in the same style of acting, he is no emotional tornado like my Hyuk..."

*sees Chuno beard and sexay, angst-ridden Tae Ha*

"OhmakeoutwithLeeDaHae,plz."

I can sympathize.

I was appalled at the thought of Oh Ji Ho being the one to potentially get the girl over Jang Hyuk. I am with you - I think OJH is gorgeous but wooden. But one set of pics and I turn 180! Yikes.
