I have finally caved in and decided to watch Whedon's Angel - yes, I am that under the rock person who has never watched the show except for "I will remember you", which remains one of my favorite shippy things in the Universe - uberromantic and ubertragic.
I was a ridiculously hardcore Buffy/Angel shipper and the thought of watching a show about Angel without Buffy did not appeal.
But ehhh, enough years passed that I have mellowed out, and I can certainly pretend they hooked up again later.
So - the Pilot. Very entertaining - in part because it was fun to see the now dated clothes and hairstyles. Angel is his own mopey hot self (dude is gorgeous but being around him for more than 10 minutes would be darn depressing. Cheer up - cracking a grin won't bring your curse back, emo hunk!) But people with nameless crimes upon their infirmly-attached souls have got to be careful, I suppose. So I approve of him mightily (he is the only modern vamp I don't have moral issues with).
Cordelia remains annoying (the older I get, the less patient I get with her fictional type) but is entertaining anyway.
Plus, the sorta-obvious bad guy of the week thing is fun. I also liked that he didn't get to save the blonde - avenge, yes, save no.
Oh, and my shipper heart liked the end.
All in all, will be continuing.
(Am not commenting on Doyle as he won't be sticking around long enough for it to matter.)
Note to self: do not move to California, you will be eaten.

Date: 2009-09-07 05:16 am (UTC)I was never really an Angel/Buffy shipper. I mildly shipped them, Seasons 1-3. But that episode will always bring a tear to my eyes, especially at the end when she's clutching him and crying, "There's not enough time, I won't forget, I won't!".
*sob*
I never got into Angel past the 1st season. I have a short attention span which is why I enjoy baddie of the week. After Cordelia got pregnant, 'Previously On Angel' voiceovers turned into a 3 minute affair and if you missed an episode, you'd be so lost. So, no more Baddie Of The Week, and instead we got weird convoluted plots.
Actually, I did recently purchase Angel Season 5 ($12.99) just because Spike is in it and apparently there's an episode where Angel is a puppet. So. Fun.

Date: 2009-09-07 03:55 pm (UTC)I actually like in "City Of" that Angel can't save the girl. The episode spends all that time building up with him (and the audience) starting to connect with Tina that when she dies you sort of feel the same disappointment Angel does. Angel's also not there to snark and banter. You make him mad, he shoves you out a window. Yes, he's a bleeding heart in some ways, but in others he just follows the quickest, most ruthless route to finish the job.

Date: 2009-09-08 09:09 pm (UTC)Wesley's character arc is one of the best I've ever seen!!! Cordelia does also a lot of growing up during the series, though I quite disliked the pregnancy arc. Her appearance on Season 5 was brilliant, though.

If you're a hard core shipper I advise skipping most of season 3 because it stinks and that is where most of the Cordy/Angel stuff happens.
