Bloody good fun!
Sep. 6th, 2009 03:41 pmHave started True Blood and it is most entertaining, in a vaguely trashy way. - will definitely keep going. Two points though, either one of which is probably going to be unpopular.
1. I am a grown-up with a child - I clearly know how babies are made. I am not 14 and sex ain't a mystery any more. Thus, having the story stop dead so some actors could have a poor imitation thereof gets really old, really fast. I fail to see any value in it - there is no appeal at all, as not only can I get real pr0n if I so desired from a multitude of pay-per-view services offered by my cable company, but as the actors are obviously not doing it, all that happens is my laughing at how "to make this work his #### would have to be 2 feet long" fake it looks. And it kills the flow of the story as well.
Blahblahblah, you are daring, now go back to the plot!
2. Bill/Sookie. I love them, I ship them. They are so my fictional kink, it hurts. Which, as far as I can tell, makes me this fandom's equivalent of Duncan/Veronica shipper. Ahhh, well. It doesn't help that I do not get the thing about Eric - I have never gone for bad boys and, yes, I know this is freaky, I find the actor for Eric really "wrong" looking. Something about his face bugs me - I know everyone finds him gorgeous but I find him offputting-looking, to say the least.

Date: 2009-09-06 04:14 pm (UTC)Although, I'm a great fan of the books I've never had much of a ship preference either way.

Date: 2009-09-06 04:15 pm (UTC)And I liked Bill a lot in the beginning, too - there is just something about how he starts treating Sookie later that bothers me. Too possessive by a long ways. I'll be curious to know what you think after S1!
How far have you gotten?!

Date: 2009-09-06 04:26 pm (UTC)WORD. I totally thought bill was fine at first. but after a while I was just like "wow he's kind of a jerk". I guess it helps I didnt read the books so I had no preconcieved biases going into it.

Date: 2009-09-06 04:32 pm (UTC)Eric does become a lot more sympathetic in S2 - he reminds me a lot of Logan from Veronica Mars actually. At first you're all "Ew! Why does everybody like that guy?" and then you have 8,000 Logan icons the next day. ;
Not that I speak from personal experience or anything... ;P

Date: 2009-09-06 04:22 pm (UTC)1. This actually is toned down a huge amount in the second season and most graphic of the seasons end mid season of S1. So you wont have to deal with them for much longer. they are annoying though I do enjoy seeing ryan kwanten shirtless all the time heh.
2. I think the thing that puts off alot of people about bill/sookie is his attitude towards sookie, more prevalent in later eps but honestly TV!bill isnt that bad, chauvinistic yes but not anywhere as terrible as his book counterpart IMO. I think Eric becomes much more compelling in S2 as a character. In S1 he's really just a glorified extra. I dont know if I'd say I have a thing for Eric (he's kind of a huge dick, in fact most of the men on the show are except lovely Sam) but I definitely have a thing for the actor, Alexander Skarsgaard.

Date: 2009-09-06 04:54 pm (UTC)apparently season 2 Eric gets awesome or something and I think he might have been the OTP in the books? That's the only reason I can think of for why he's the popular OTP.

Date: 2009-09-06 07:31 pm (UTC)I couldn't care less whether my kid sat next to a waspiest wasp or a Black transgender kid who is Muslim (or which one of the two she chose to date, either) but I would certainly care if that kid is someone who feeds on blood and whose default mode is to drain humans dry.
Prejudice based on color of skin = racist and moronic. Prejudice based on basic facts of vamp's diet = kid less likely to be eaten.
*rolls eyes*
I confess I do not get vamp=sexy default in modern fiction. Since when is reanimated corpse that drinks human blood (and thus probably has nasty breath) a sex symbol? Also, unless it's a very recently made vamp, the tptb should really explain what he/she does with his time and, if their otp is not likewise 200yrs old, why they glom onto them - I would think it odd for a 60yr old to chase a college student. It's even weirder when the older person is 200 even if he looks 30. If you explain it well, fine - otherwise *roll eyes*

Date: 2009-09-06 10:12 pm (UTC)Bigot! Bring on the torches!
(This was one of the problems I had with the only book of the series I read. And I also do not really get the vampires = sexy thing. Though, I guess they are probably better than werewolves on that front. This is probably why - despite my almost inexhaustible appetite for bad and trashy TV - I have not yet watched True Blood.)

Date: 2009-09-06 06:15 pm (UTC)Bill really loves Sookie and that counts for a lot, but still he is a vampire and Sookie tends to forget certain aspects of that...to her peril. We'll see how they take things in the show.
I think the pairing I love most is Hoyt and Jessica, but you probably haven't gotten there yet, so I won't say any more.

Date: 2009-09-06 07:43 pm (UTC)I haven't watched the second season yet, which is apparently where everyone jumps ship and goes from Bill to Eric, but I'm not surprised. If they continue the show the way they do the books, Eric will end up the OTP.
I'm not advocating the books by the way, they were like trashy romance novels with supernatural elements.

Date: 2009-09-06 08:43 pm (UTC)I hadn't bothered to read them but I think they're following the romance closely, no?

Date: 2009-09-06 09:55 pm (UTC)Because then I am out.
That is one of the main reasons I do not watch American shows (the other reason is they either run too long or get cancelled).
I loathe when the protagonist, be he male or female, has an otp to end all otps to all appearances and then moves on and has another otp to end all otps, and then a third etc.
It just - drives me crazy. The "soulmate-hopping." Ugh.
So warn me? I will then check out Angel instead (not that the soulmate thing worked out well for him, lol)

Date: 2009-09-06 11:00 pm (UTC)Eric really isn't much of anything in the first season but I do prefer him to Bill and it's possibly because of the way Bill (Stephen Moyer) pronounces the name "Sookie" and is always "She is MINE" all over the place. I just find myself giggling and rolling my eyes all at the same time.
I don't really "ship" anyone although my preference is Eric/Sookie. I really watch for the character stuff and the storylines when they get to that. ;)

Date: 2009-09-07 01:09 am (UTC)The show, however, is a different animal. They are diverging from the books in many ways, so who knows what they will do. Although I do predict some rocky times coming for S/B, surely that's no bad thing?

Date: 2009-09-06 09:53 pm (UTC)I don't hate Bill as much as everyone else does.. but Eric isn't a bad guy at all, imo, so i actually love him. Normally i don't like the bad guys either. Though i agree.. Alex Skarsgard does nothing for me when he's not playing a vampire.. the eric persona does him worlds of good, if i see him out of character i just don't think he's attractive at all. I was actually on the fence between team bill/eric before i started reading the books. In the show, honestly, i don't mind that much. Probably because TV sookie (more than book sookie) just seems so weak & childish sometimes (why do i usually dislike the lead character of my fandoms?!), i'm not as bothered by someone having the protective instinct over her. Gender aside, i'd probably speak for her too if i was around her.

Date: 2009-09-08 12:43 am (UTC)I like Eric but I don't care if he hooks up with Sookie or not, I just think she needs to release the dead weight named Bill.
True Blood is trashy fun but it's not about Sookie or Bill for me. The supporting characters are the best part of this series.
Duncan/Veronica is an abomination. I vote No and Never and OMDB.
