I should give this a try. I read Arch of Triumph eons ago (I think it was the only Remarque that was translated to Korean at the time), and it left me in a daze for a couple of days. I don't know why I haven't tried harder to track his backlist. Maybe I actually do have a threshold for angst...

I confess, I tried Emma Tennant's Pemberley years & years ago (before the age of internet & fanfic), and I don't think I ever gave up on a book faster. P&P is not even my favorite Austen, but that one read like a 'how did this get published?!' horror novel.

Date: 2009-08-18 08:57 pm (UTC)I adore Remarque, he is my favorite author, bar none, but yes, his books are so bleak. I guess it comes from being part of that lost generation. I do find them beautifully written and ridiculously romantic.
Another one of his I adore is Shadows in Lisbon. So gorgeous (and of course, so heartbreaking).
I loved Arc de Triomphe too. Btw, they made a movie of it in the 1940s which wasn't bad, even if not as good as the book.
