Oooooh. Doctor Who. Why are you so awesome?
Finished ‘A Girl in the Fireplace.’ I don’t know if I like it. While the bits about the Doctor being always lonely and losing the ones he cares about to death and concealing it and never letting the loss show, where awesome, the pacing was off that the structure…I don’t know, it didn’t work for me.
But then I got to the Cybermen two parter. So much more my thing. I love it to bits. Am in the middle of second ep and eeeee!
Two Mickeys? A good thing (I didn’t care for him first season but somehow this season, he is hotter and more awesome and everything). I also love the exploration that everyone realizes Doctor’s first priority is Rose. True, Ten is not desperate about everything, the way Nine was, but in his off-kilter way, he is just as focused.
Cybermen are suitably tragic and creepy.
I loved seeing Pete again (and I don’t blame Rose at all, as it’s wrong but I’d do the same) and the theme of seeing those who’d died in our reality but are still alive here, is very poignant.
Alternaworld is subtly different and I love it.
And Doctor/Rose as waiters is made of win. So is Doctor’s desperate (and somehow angry) attempt to surrender, Rose’s brief jealousy over a maid, alterna-Jackie still being Jackie-ish, Ricky the parking ticket bandit etc etc. Awesome.
Unrelated, but: OMG.
Jumong is scary-addictive. I also realized that it’s 80 eps long, each one over an hour. My GOD. Even if I skipped sleep and watched 4 hours a day, it would take me three weeks to finish. Whoa.
Anyway, it’s a good thing I watch it by myself because otherwise yelling at the screen thing like “dieeeeeee’ (at the Sorceress) or ‘It’s your Dad! It’s your Dad!’ (at Jumong) would probably get me locked up in a cushy padded cell.
Because. OMG. OMG.
Haemosu.
OMG.
Because OMG, Haemosu is alive. EEEEEE!
Which makes me scary excited, because while I now like Jumong, who has progressed from whiny puppy to puppy desperately trying to grow up and learn to fight and to face life, he is still got ways to go before he is half as awesome as his Dad.
OMG.
Basically, he survived his fall from a cliff but when he got to Puyo, the Sorceress found him first and without telling Kumwa, locked him up in this underground dungeon for 20 years (!!!). The only reason she didn’t kill him is because it was bad omen.
OMG. OMG. And now Jumong found him because he is getting training from prison director and he doesn’t know who it is but he feels his heart racing and he told his Mom and she is now freaking out because awesome blind guy who’s in jail and she is wondering if it’s Haemosu, but trying to conceal it, and OMG, Jumong tries to ask the man who he is and he replies it’s been so long, even he doesn’t remember and OMG OMG OMG.
How come Haemosu only got more awesome?
OMG.
There is going to be HELL to pay when Lady Yuhwa finds out. But not as much hell to pay as when Jumong does because if he grows up to be as awesome a warrior as the previews show, he is going to take the kingdom apart.
Serves them right. For Haemosu, and for mistreating Jumong, and for everything.
You know, earlier they had this brief scene which really explained why Jumong was the way he was: no sword, ingratiating etc. Yuhwa did it, as a way to protect herself from the Queen and her sons. And you can tell that Jumong was bullied when he was a kid and you get the sense that he did want to learn to fight and be ‘manly’ and all that (just see his eagerness when he does start, and a certain kind of gritted-teeth determination that comes out if he’s pushed, once he allows it to come out) but he kept on being prevented and he just finally gave up and went the path of least resistance. But OMG, he is so much more natural as someone full of pride and courage.
OK, to go back.
I love the scene in four where you first see Sosunho realize there is something more to the odd stray they picked up. She tells Jumong that if he can defeat some guy in her retinue, she will let him go, and even grant him a wish, and the fight scene follows and Jumong has no skills at all, but he just won’t let go and ends up winning through sheer refusal to give up and just losing it. And you see Sosunho realize that the puppy just might be rabid.
YES.
Also, he’s your future husband, k?
I love that she takes him to the sacred mountain (his wish) and lets him go, and he tells her he is a Prince of Puyo but she won’t believe it of course (this muddy straggler?) and you can see she is a tiny bit disappointed that her odd but cute and gutsy find is such a liar :D
Another scene I love is the scene that finally pushes Jumong into adulthood. On the mountain, he overhears that his half-brothers meant to kill him. He overhears them glibly discuss it. I love the look on Jumong’s face. It’s rage and loss and sorrow and…when he finally gets up, red-eyed, he is not a kid any more.
Of course, he finds the sacred bow and unlike the brothers, is able to string it, but he breaks it as the bow is rotten (symbolic, much? He is going to take Puyo apart).
I love when he returns and decides to train in secret. The one guy they find (prison director) is not very good at all, being a lushy who mainly makes him run up the mountains etc, but I love that Jumong’s sheer grit and determination (when not held in check any more) is such that he is still making a lot of progress (I love when he ‘practice’ fights Daeso).
So goooood.
And then he meets Haemosu. OMG.
Who, if the previews are correct, is going to train him. OMG. Without knowing it’s his son.
YES.
And I bring you some youtube Jumong vids:
Jumong/Sosunho vid:
Yuhwa and Haemosu, Jumong’s super awesome parents:
OK, this vid is basically just an excuse to ogle Song Il-Gook aka Jumong in armor. I can’t believe I am saying this, but he looks even hotter with a beard:
Jumong MV:
Scene of vengeance from near the end. YESSSSS
Another Jumong/Sosunho vid:
A vid from the beginning:
In other news, I always need a drama to look forward to. ISWAK2 is too far away, so I picked a fall drama: Legend, about a legendary (huh ;)) Korean ruler, which looks full of battles and politics and angst.
I went looking for vids on youtube, not expecting to find much, because the drama doesn’t air until September and it’s still filming. I guess I’d forgotten how popular Bae Yong Joon really is, because there are tons of vids on there. Insane. Apparently he’s been doing movies and it’s his first drama in five years, so fangirls are going rabid (also, I finally know why he grew his hair out so long. It’s for this drama).
Here is a preview vid. Starts slow but then gets good. Can I sense a rough childhood and star-crossed love? Why, yes, I can:
This is a vid from some filming footage, mainly interesting because we get to see a lot of fighting on horseback in armor, and I, for one, am all about that:
Also, because why not, a couple of MV’s from Wallace Huo’s Emerald on the Roof. I don’t think it has subs though.
P.S. Almost forgot, does anyone know what Hansungbyulgok is about? It’s an eight ep period kdrama currently airing and it looks pretty.

Date: 2007-07-11 07:22 pm (UTC)Odd idea, that.
This episode was just more plot-holed than normal...it was all just wrong.
But now you're on the two-parter, and that's definitely better.

Date: 2007-07-11 04:16 pm (UTC)And NO ONE wears a beard like SIG does...he just has the perfect cheekbones for it.
Very much looking forward to Legend (24 eps, blissful sigh)
Thge short one you posted pics of looks good, too.

Date: 2007-07-11 05:09 pm (UTC)He just looks incredibly gorgeous with it. Usually it's 'ehh, like him despite the beard' or at best 'doesn't look any worse' but with him? GUUUUUUUH.
You should so watch Jumong. I usually only like period/epic/wuxia dramas (even Damo, I liked but didn't go mad for) but with Jumong it's mad pash.
Can't wait till Legend.

Date: 2007-07-11 04:54 pm (UTC)Puhleeeesseeee!!!
I'm not usually a big fan of facial hair, but by God, the Koreans sure know how to work it! I had my first exposure to facial hair of the non-ick kind in Dae Jung Gum and i'm pleased to see that they haven't lost their touch!
off to beg mom for her copy of Jumong...

Date: 2007-07-11 06:13 pm (UTC)The Doctor gets angry when people don't play by the rules. As an idealist I suppose he would be. Decent people are supposed to follow basic rules of conduct and he gets upset when people don't. Idealism has always been the Doctors major flaw though. His belief that people are ultimately good. Nine had it more than Ten, but Ten still has it.
And poor Mickey. Everyone else is always second fiddle to Rose for Ten. He can't seem to focus on more than one companion at a time and Rose is it for him. She's his responsibility and his salvation in a way and everyone else just fades away.

Date: 2007-07-12 06:38 pm (UTC)LOL.
And agreed on Ten. The Doctor is still optimistic and a bit naive for having been out for so long.

Have learned to use clubbox, just so I access Jumong. Dl'ing at 30 k/s. The things I do....

no subject
Date: 2007-07-13 03:01 pm (UTC)Background is only two and a half eps and then it goes into 'present' times. At first, I have to warn you, Jumong is kinda a drip, but he learns fast and by where I am now (11) he is pure awesome.
