Anthony Trollope
Jul. 11th, 2009 02:34 amFilmi-girl reminded me of my love for the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope so I am currently reading "Can you forgive her?", a novel about a woman who vaccilates between two very different suitors.
My favorite characters, however are Glencora and Plantagent Palliser, a married couple who actually have to work on their marriage - theirs was arranged. Glencora is torn because she cannot give her husband a child (initially the reason he wanted a wife) and because she still loves a former flame.
I just love this bit so much:
I would rather have you for my wife, childless, - if you will try to love me, - than any other woman, though another might give me an heir. Will you try to love me?
It's Plantagenet talking to Glencora. I love it doubly much because he is so incredibly emotionally reserved.
Mmmmm.
