Various on a Saturday
Jun. 20th, 2009 07:56 pm1. Mr. Mousie recently ordered tourist materials from Korean Tourism Ministry (all you have to do is request it on a website) and I have been reading them. (a) They make me hungry - the food described sounds yummy, though if one was a vegetarian, he would starve (b) They were describing a particular mountain range and I was reading along going "hmmm, I am not super-outdoorsey but it sounds pret...it is in North Korea!!!" I think I will be skipping that one; and (c) They had a section on Hallyu-related sights. They won my undying approval by putting a picture of Bae Yong Joon in Legend i.e. dangermousie's favorite drama ever. Hmmmm, I think we just might find ourselves at the still-there-with-sets site of the filming. Us and a million Japanese adjummas.
2. We were in a bookstore today where I walked by "Robert Pattison: Fated For Fame." Yes. Indeed.
3. I got volume 2 of Otomen yesterday - I think one of the things I love the most about it is that the main character is such a decent guy. Manga heroes are often immature or bad boys - it's nice to see one who is just a good guy.
4. Fell prey to two more mangas today: Love Attack and Rasetsu. Both look good. (there was also another manga by Matsuri Hino, about a guy who is cursed to follow orders of this particular girl, a fact which neither of them likes since she'd rather he was in love with her - but after Vampire Knight becoming trainwreck of weirdness, I was staying away).
Love Attack plot: Chiemi Yusa's high-school record is far from perfect. She's already been suspended twice for fighting, and she's not even half-way through her first year! In danger of getting expelled for starting yet another brawl, her teacher approaches her with an unexpected offer: get her classmate Akifumi "Deranged Devil" Hirata, the nastiest fighter in the whole school, to clean up his act, and her record will officially be cleared. Reluctantly she accepts, and immediately goes on the attack. But as she's waiting for him to retaliate, she discovers that he has more in store for her than just a fight! From the creator of Girl Got Game and Heaven!! comes a rollicking brawl of a good time as the roughest guy and girl in school get themselves into trouble--and find themselves in love.
I have started reading this and it's hilarious and I love both leads.
Rasetsu plot: Rasetsu is in a job of a ghost/demon hunter. Problem is, one demon marked her with a curse - if she does not find true love by age 20, he will come and get her. Well, maybe it will help that Yako Hoshino, a young man with spiritual powers of his own, comes to the agency seeking help. Rasetsu bears a striking resemblance to his old love Yurara - yup, it's a Yurara spin-off.

Date: 2009-06-21 12:09 am (UTC)Love Attack: Heard good things about it, read the mangaka's Heaven!!! and thought it was absolutely hilarious, but have only come across vols 4 and 6 of it so far, so I haven't started it.
Rasetsu: This is a sequel to Yurara, which had potential but ended up a major disappointment. I think, though, that a lot of that was Chika Shiomi trying to conform to normal shoujo tropes, and this sounds closer to Night of the Beasts and Canon fare, both of which I adore. I grabbed the first volume at A-Kon, but haven't read it yet.
Otomen: Is love and continues to have the best excuse for an in-canon shipper ever. (His career! It hinges on their ever working up to a kiss!) I also remained stunned by the leads' resemblances to Ichigo and Rukia of Bleach.

Date: 2009-06-23 12:53 am (UTC)Rasetsu's prequel Yurara was pretty good... but became really annoying really quickly. Yurara's helplessness annoyed me like no tomorrow. Rasetsu's a much more likable heroine, so i like it much better.
Love Attack is hilarious. recent chapters have taken the story into a weird turn.. so at this point i don't know whether it'll stay good, or turn out to be a waste...
