Yet more Roswell from the crazed one...
Aug. 13th, 2005 08:00 pmSaw three more Roswell eps: The Christmas one and the two about the missing crazy girl.
The Christmas had some moments I didn't care for as I am not about Xmas spirit (though I loved the fact that Max is an atheist who doesn't change his mind at the end). But it had some heartbreaking moments too.
When it opens, Michael and Max are picking up Xmas tree, and Max doesn't appear to be in paralyzing agony by which we know something truly awful is about to happen. And of course, in front of their eyes, a man tries to protect his kid from a car and ends up being run over.
I love that Max's first instinct is to bolt to the guy's side to help and heal him and Michael has to pull him away. And of course the guy dies and...I was sure Max was going to have a breakdown sooner or later and well, I guess the time is finally here. He starts seeing the dead man everywhere, haunting him and taunting him and that boy just needs a hug. He realy doesn't need any more trauma.
I do love that even though they are not a couple any more, and they still have all those unspoken issues, the first person he goes to with the problem preying on his mind is Liz. And she is the only one he seems to tell about the dead man haunting him. And what I love is that she knows and understands him so well that she really is the comfort and consolation he needs. She doesn't flip or anything as he is her only priority. The scene that really got me is when she tells him that of course he didn't save the man, he was trying to protect Michael, Isabel and Tess and he confesses to her that he wasn't thinking about them. He was thinking of when he was tortured in the White Room and how he was terrified of ending back there again. Not only is it a big yay for continuity (and angst continuity, no less), but also he did instinctively want to help the guy despite that. And his fear is so understandable and human and forgivable, but he can't deal with it and hates himself. The guy must get a discount on self-torture implements, really.
I do love that it is who Liz finds out how to help him (by telling him about that sick girl). And the fact that Michael who is against the plan, volunteers to go with him and help and later says he wished he had the healing powers.
I love the scene in the children's ward, when he heals that girl and sees all the other kids and really does snap and starts going from cot to cot healing them all. I also like that using those powers does drain him and make him sick. He is pretty much dragging himself by the end (and it takes a bit for the powers to be restored). (Also, if by healing them he gave Kyle and Liz special powers, does that mean those kids will have them too?)
And of course, his conversation with Liz at the end about how he couldn't not help the other ones and how he wants to do it again and again and again. Guuuuh, poor guy. And while normally I would find Liz's reply "maybe God intended it all that way, however horrible it is (re: sick people), so you shouldn't take it on yourself, you are not God" pretty awful, it worked for me here. For one, it's because it's something you have to believe to keep your faith in God. And for another, I think as always, Max is her number one priority and she wants to keep him from exposing himself further and to give him peace of mind and would say and do anything to achieve that. His last sentence to her, when she asks him about coming to the services, "I would, but I don't believe in God" is...poor guy. Of course, when he shows up, it's not because he changes his mind. She asks him why he came and he says "I believe in you." Wow. Liz, you silly silly woman, take him somewhere quiet and give him his Christmas present right now and you know what I mean.
In the two about the nutty woman, he gets some more guilt because his sister's visions cause Valenti his job, but the scene that I loved was Max sitting in the Crashdown, refusing to leave because he is worried about Liz being by herself because there is a kidnapper/murderer in town. And he is sweet and quiet and matter-of-fact, and they are not a couple and she hurt him earlier and he is still sweet and steady and caring. I love him. Of course, seeing that they are being able to function with each other for more than 5 minutes without killing themselves means something horrible is coming, I am sure.
And poor Liz. She still loves him, she still wants him, and she can not get together with him or tell him what really happened with Kyle. She is in a no-win situation. But I love that she admits to Maria that she is obsessed with Max and he is all she thinks about. Yay! I love the bit where Alex is showing her Swedish slides and she starts crying because she realizes she and Max will never see them together. And then she and Max have that meeting in the closet and she tells him how she feels it's so unfair that he will never be able to go places and how he's been robbed of so much and he tells her that she should be able to see them anyway, and he'd be waiting for her and she will always be part of the group etc etc. I am actually confused by this. Does that mean he is OK with letting her go as long as he knows she will come back? Or it is his guilt talking? I think he is deliberately trying to pull away from her and not push the relationship at all because he doesn't want the hurt again so he is trying to be dispassionate. I don't think it's working super well, but at least it enables him to function.
Sean Deluca? Cute enough, but word to the wise, Liz. Even if it wasn't for Max, dating a guy who was just released from juvie is not a good thing. If there will be Sean/Liz I will scream. And kill someone. Yes, I know she thinks she can never have Max and needs to be distracted, but no. Please, don't! You would be the world's worst dummy as Max is what any girl in her right mind would want.
Tess/Kyle. Now, that's a ship I am all for. Of course, I'd be all for Tess/hyppopotamus if it meant Tessie would keep her mitts of Max. He does relax around her a lot more now that she stopped chasing him.
Michael, Michael, Michael. I love you. I love that you think it's stupid for Max to go heal but end up driving and protecting him and confess that you wish you could have helped to heal the kids. Also, Michael/Maria is utterly sweet in this episode. I love her insistence on getting and exchanging Xmas presents (and Michael's idea of a present is to go to a hardware store LOL). I guess she knows if she doesn't put her foot down, nothing would happen. And I love that when Iz tells him to think f a thoughtful present he thinks of a Jetta bumper, because Maria is always complaining of hers near falling off. And he actually is making one for her myself. I actually think it's a much more romantic present than the pearl earrings Iz buys in his name because he is making something for her and really did think of what she needed. Awww. That's the loveliest present. I also love how he is so terrified that the present won't be liked be her and tries to figure out what's in the box and looks so happy and grateful when it's pearls that she also likes. I just love how he closes his eyes and holds her really tight. They are totally adorable together. (Btw, are they back together? They certainly cuddle and all. I guess he did figure how to get his powers under control now, so he doesn't worry about hurting her any more). Basically, I adore the two of them together. I also loved his agnostic, cover-all-bases attitude about going to services, i.e. "won't hurt."
Poor Valenti got fired. On the plus side he got laid. I think.
Isabel? Continue with the not caring. Intruding into person's dreams is really invasive and nasty. I did like seeing Liz's dream, how she builds straw men to keep Max away but of course in her dream Max sees through them (btw, did Sean look a bit like the dream Brad, or is it just me?)

Date: 2005-08-14 05:09 am (UTC)And yes, the bumper was by far the better present. Earrings had nothing to do with Maria as Maria. They would still work whichever girl he was dating. But the bumper (and the fact that he worked on it himself, awwww) is a whole other kettle of fish.
I also love how he just hugs and holds her so completely when she is grateful re: earrings.

Date: 2005-08-14 01:50 pm (UTC)Basically, it's one of these Dupe-Tess/Dupe-Max situations. The whole "if you haven't already met your soulmate, it could have worked out with this person, though never as well."
