A nun and a rocker are my new obsession

You can usually tell how obsessed I am about a drama by the amount of caps I take per episode.

Cap count for ep two of Ikemen Desu Ne is 1067 caps. For 45 minutes of run time. Luckily for your connections, I managed to cull it down to a bit of under 130.
I am adoring this drama so much, it's not even funny. I prefer it to YAB, to be honest, even though as a past post indicates, I had to eat a ton of crow and admit the darlingness of the latter :)
Why?
1. Pace. I have no idea how many episodes IDN is but no jdrama is longer than 11 eps (and while first ep of IDN was close to two hours, subsequent ones are 45 minutes each). Thus is has much shorter run time than the kdrama. This can be a problem if one was adopting a plot-heavy kdrama (i.e. how to cram it all in) but one of YAB's big weaknesses was the fact that the set-up, cute as it was, really didn't have enough steam or story for 16 eps of over an hour each. IDN being so much shorter really tightens the story and picks up the pace.
2. That brings me to point n2. Because they have less time, they cut out a lot of the filler and concentrate on the story's strongest selling point - Mio/Ren. And let's face it, is there anyone for whom the Minam/Tae Kyung part was not the favorite part of the story and the reason for watching? YAB fans might be shocked to see how much less screentime Shu and Yuki (i.e. Shinwoo and Jeremy) have here, but as I always viewed them as two pretty pieces of wood and occasional annoyances, I am fine with it.
3. Different take on the characters. This is, for obvious reasons, is most noticeable with Mio and Ren who are both much more adult than their YAB counterparts. Mio is AWESOME. She is not meek and helpless the way Minam was while keeping her sunniness and warmth. And she is young but not childish. Plus, she's so gorgeous, I want to jump her myself. Ditto for Ren - he's still a prickly perfectionist with issues but he's not a drama queen the way TK was (which can be either a plus or a minus :P I just like it because it's a different take) and, just like Mio, he feels more grown-up. Mio and Ren's chemistry and vibe is pretty different from that in YAB - JGS and Park Shin Hye had this sweet giddiness of first love - I wanted to squish them together and watch puppies and rainbows be spontaneously created. Mio and Ren? Not so much. Instead I keep having vivid thoughts of them X-ratedly sexing it up against a wall. To me, their chemistry is intense and *gulp* sexual. Neither type is better than the other but I am a perv so...
4. Themes. I like the themes of teamwork and family connection for Mio with her brother. And the feel of it feels oddly real despite the crazy set-up - they removed all the OTT gags the original had (once again a matter of personal preference but with a few exceptions, I prefer my stuff with the less OTT the better).
This ep had rescues! Are they not the most gorgeous thing that ever gorgeoused?

I spent most of the ep yelling at them to make out now, for my sanity.

Oh God, I forgot how much I hated Momster. She is such a total abusive, self-absorbed bitch that just looking at her makes me want to stab her in the face. There is no way Ren would be as standoffish and odd as he is if it wasn't for psychoface. Here he's remembering when she dumped him on the street.

I kinda adore the girl who plays Nana (Uee's character in YAB).

Here, son (not that I am going to publicly admit it), how about you help me remix my stuff so I make more $$$. Oh, and have some shrimp while we are at it, because I can't be bothered to remember you are deathly allergic - you always enjoy fun memories of your emotionally abusive childhood! (By the end of YAB, I would start to swear in Russian the second the woman as much as showed her face. Let's see if I'll feel the same way here; I am pretty sure I will).

Her telling him she believes her mother (who she hasn't seen since childhood) will come and find her and that is why she wants to stay in the band hits all his mommy issues the wrong way and when she gives him the ring she has from her Mom and says she believes in miracles, he tosses it into the pond and snarls if she gets a miracle of finding the ring, he'll let her stay. Ren, get some therapy because you are being quite a bastard.

She searches through the night but can't find it. Maybe because actually Ren still has it (and has the grace to look guilty - maybe next time you can make your point in words, crazy guy?)

He feels bad so very prettily. I approve.

I started LOLing at this cap because I flashbacked to Matsujun's AnAn photoshoot. Now all we need is a skanky blonde model.

Ahem. Suffice it to say that by now I am finding him quite attractive. I am not sure I want to know how old the actor is because I want to keep the tattered shreds of my self-respect at least.

He goes to check first thing in the morning and she is still there! This is the scene where I went from really liking it to unreasonable and ridiculous adoration. Guuuuuh! So shippy! So intense! And all I could think, seriously, was 'just go have dirty hot sex in a closet somewhere already.' I am going to hell. But seriously, the chemistry, it burns!

And she makes him grin! Well...almost. Baby steps, Ren, baby steps!

And they make faces at each other!

And are handsy!

And perform in sync! (A real grin this time! Whoa, watch it, dude, or you'll be actually laughing soon, the horror!)

He finds out she just learned her mother is dead and comes running over and this awesome awesome scene follows:

And once again, because it bears repeating:

Date: 2011-07-31 01:35 pm (UTC)Tbh, even though I adore it, if you had a falling out with jdramas, I'd say avoid because it is very much a jdrama (unlike e.g. Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake which was a kdrama masquerading as a jdrams)
I totally understand btw because I had a falling out with jdramas myself - I haven't watched on in a couple of years until IDN, ironically, and Ouran brought me back.

Date: 2011-07-31 07:25 am (UTC)I really like they way they've condensed the story in the Japanese version. The first episode was ridiculously long, but covered so much territory.
I really really hope they do some kind of an equivalent to the infamous pig chase scene in this.

ETA: looked it up, he's 21. Phew. Now I feel much less like a sick woman.
Yeah, I knew they were JE though since I never keep track with j-ent, I have never heard of them before.
Re: pig chase. I don't think there's much chance - they seem to have taken out all the OTT wacky stuff (which I am happy about actually - not big on OTT wackiness most times).

Date: 2011-07-31 05:28 pm (UTC)Tamamori Yuta (Ren) is luckily legal ^^ and Johnny likes 'em young. Mio is awesome, she is a far more likable character then Mi Nam/Mi Nyeo and Miori is really a good actress. I'm still suprised this her fourth acting job so I hope this will give her more opportunities.
I actually prefer Uee to Haruna who in real life is a idol (a member of the horrible akb48)

akb48? Eeeeek. Heard about them.

Date: 2011-08-01 02:54 am (UTC)isn't it awesome? Agreed, I adore JGS but the Japanese actor is, physically, much more my thing. Plus, this drama is a lot more shippy than the kdrama (mainly because they took out nonshippy scenes).
I believe they air on saturday.
