Firefly rewatch - Serenity

Mr. Mousie and I started rewatching Firefly. We watched the Serenity ep tonight. It's funny - I haven't seen the show in two years and some things are still the same: wanting Mal and Inara to make out yesterday, finding Jayne hilarious, and some are so different: I liked Wash before but adore him now, River does not annoy me the way she used to in the beginning the first time. But the biggest change is Simon. I grew to love Simon the first time I watched the show but at first I was indifferent - but now I am madly, protectively in love. In fact, I think he might be my favorite character, even over Mal. He is just such an innocent, so good and so tender with his sister. He is just so - I don't know what it is but I feel almost maternally protective.

It's also fun to watch in retrospect - all the connections that will be made.

Oh, and if I ever had any doubts that his threat of not treating Kaylee and letting her die if Mal wasn't going to help them escape was bluff, they would have been dispelled by his desperate run to the medbay when Mal lied to him Kaylee was dead.

I still love Mal as much as ever - dark, and weary, and trying not to care but caring too much. I love Kaylee - Mal's quasi-little-sister, sunny, and warm, and probably one of the sweetest TV characters ever (I am so glad she and Simon end up together - each is so selfless and warm they deserve someone to love them). I love Inara with her hidden meanings, and edges, and poise (also, yes, am still mad Mal/Inara shipper. The scene where he tells her to escape once the reavers come and she protests that they would be leaving him and he touches her shoulder...so ridiculously hot. Mal and Inara are already trapped in the zone of knowing but not acknowledging both their own feelings and the feelings of the other person - when she threatens to leave the ship if Mal ditches Simon and River, she is not speaking as a passenger to a landlord but as to someone who would be hurt by her leaving).

I love everyone.

Awww, you make me want to start my own long-delayed rewatch. (And yeah, you know the ship is good when them barely touching each other makes your breath catch. Guh.)

having the series and movie on my ipod means i'm constantly rewatching the series -- most especially in times of stress. which meant i watched/listened to it again at work this week. and still every viewing brings out different nuances in the characters and story arc. this time around it was Death walking around with a sledgehammer behind Inara. dammit, i really wish this was something we could have seen what Joss would have done over five seasons....

Yeah - I am noticing all these Inara hints this time around. *sigh*

It makes me think somewhat differently about her refusal to give in to her feelings for Mal, oddly enough

I had never watched Firefly (just the movie which I enjoyed) so Hubby & I rented it recently. It's cute but I find Kaylee very distracting as the actress became a major character toward the end of Star Gate Atlantis. I have to say, though, I like her Kaylee much better than her other character.

Never saw SGA but yeah, I can see how it can get distracting.
