Ahahahahaaaa. I was looking for something else but came across this instead.
It's Morena Baccarin (who played Inara) revealing that Inara's secret (which was hinted at during the show) is that she was dying.
Color me unsurprised! It's Joss after all. His main OTPs are always put through hell that would put a kdrama writer to shame. Going by Joss' track record, I bet it would have been revealed right after she and Mal finally worked out their issues and got together. In fact, I bet they'd make bone-melting love and then she'd expire in his arms, or something similar. Bonus points for some manly tears or anguished screaming. Heh.I still haven't recovered from the whole Buffy/Angel angstorama.
Suddenly I remember why I feel only half-bad about there not being more eps. I bet if the show ran for 5 seasons, not only would Wash, Book, and Inara have bought it, but Simon and Kaylee would have managed to wreck it somehow and the show would end up with everyone dead or miserable...
To be fair, I always thought Mal himself was doomed. Doomed doomed doomed with a capital D. I was pretty sure that if the trilogy did materialize he would have bought it at the end of the last one.
Actually, my little Firefly re-binge made me think of *alas* Dollhouse and how in a way it's an extension of a particular idea in Firefly, even if Dollhouse is mediocre at best and morally repugnant and Firefly was neither. I think the idea of a dollhouse is a sort of extension of River's backstory. Think about it - a creepy corporation which takes people and messes with their minds turning them into whatever necessary. And a man obssessed with getting one of the women out.
EXCEPT. EXCEPT. In Firefly, that sub-story starts when Simon rescues River and they go on the run. The show never asks us to feel bad for people torturing River because *gasp* they might feel lonesome sometimes or occasionally crack a joke. It portrays that organization as soulessly evil and what they did to River unconscionable (not to mention it does not shirk from the fact that the effect of brain-messing damaged her almost irretrievably) -it's not all about the evil corporation, it's about people who escaped from it. Oh, and everything that Simon does for River is not creepy because he is her brother - he is fixated on rescuing her not because she is a fantasy of some sort, a woman he's never met or even seen, and who he is attracted to but because she is someone he grew up with, a sibling. Oh, and also the people in Firefly can be damn heroic and selfless and there isn't a single heroic individual on Dollhouse - they are either brain-washed manequins or evil whoremasters...

Date: 2009-05-23 03:21 am (UTC)Dollhouse is just too blurry and weird. I mean, I see people making the argument that Whedon is maturing and dealing with more moral complexity instead of just good guys vs. overwhelming evil, but... Dollhouse is just too mixed up and confused. It's nihilism in spiked heels, and it thinks it's so cool.

Date: 2009-05-23 09:23 am (UTC)That's some great thoughts about Dollhouse being continuation of that Firefly idea! And yes, Ballard/Echo storyline creeps me out, while the very similiar Simon/River is one of the most touching on the show. In Simon's case he does it out of love to his sister - for Ballard it's just a weird fixation on some girl that in the end is about making him feel better.
Now that you pointed out the evil corporation similiarity as well - I'm a little curious as to where would this storyline evolve had Firefly got many seasons. They are portrayed in what have as evil, and I like that - but with say five seasons, I have this feeling they would try to make them a bit symphatetic, the whole portrayal of the government could evolve closer to what we have in Dollhouse. And I wounder how different it would appear on screen if at the same time we kept the core good main characters.

I was all set to love Ballard/Echo - I love the trope of a rescuer, I love the actors, but it just comes across as so sleazy to me here.
