I have been DYING to see the new Star Trek movie.

Unfortunately, while you can do a lot of things with an infant: go for walks, go to bookstores, take her to restaurants and museums, go shopping for ice-cream, or even take a pretty drive, you cannot go to the movies.

*sad*

Normally, Mr. Mousie and I would then go separately and watch it in turn but we won't have to do that as we are going on a mini trip Memorial Day with the baby being minded for us by my incredibly awesome parents, so we are watching it together then. I reiterated it to Spouse repeatedly :)

I used to really like the show back when I was much younger and it was in reruns. Mmmm, Kirk.

I realize I have also not posted anything about Dollhouse season finale. That's because it was ywanworthy, even down to them going the most conventional, boring route with Alpha.

fyi: Star Trek was AWESOME. Also, Kirk, Spock, AND the Asian guy(sorry, I"m not a Star Trek aficianado) were ALL hot. Zachary Quinto was a brilliant casting choice as Spock and I never thought I'd say that Sylar was hot but MMM, I'll take icy woobie Vulcan any day:) Although I'd prefer threesome with Kirk and Spock.

Sulu is the Asian guy.

Hee threesome

Star Trek movie looks fantastic.

I watched a lot of the original series when I was in middle school, so I'm pretty excited. Also Eric Bana as a villain = incredibly excited [livejournal.com profile] chisakami

I think what surprises me about reactions to Alpha's role in the finale isn't that it gets labeled as boring or conventional (because it is both) but that anything different was really expected. I mean, it fits everything that the first 11 episodes said about the Dolls (that their "real" natures influence their wiped and imprinted states, such as Victor's always being drawn to Sierra, Sierra being analytical, and a bit standoffish and bossy, and Echo wanting to save people) so I just don't get why it was expected to be different.

It's the miracle catch that annoys me, because it was simultaneous with Echo not being able to save Caroline.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
The thing I am so irritated with in Alpha's storyline is because I thought if they had someone who might have been a surgeon or soldier or whatever go completely bonkers because of all these personalities, some of whom were violent and/or evil, it would have been so much more interesting, such a potent affirmation (not that the show ever had one) of Dollhouse being evil and what they do being evil, messing someone for good through repeated personalities and deying selfhood. Echo was getting bleedback from past personalities so it would make sense Alpha did too and that beeldback could have been violence or result of his insanity. After all, we never did have another Alpha-situation (he could have had a normal sane personality and then gone violently insane) on the show before so they could have gone some other way. I thought Echo attraction could be real or being smart could be real but insanity and violence the results of evilness of Dollhouse. But no, we can't have that! Instead we have lovely Dollhouse keeping serial killers off the streets.

Was I expecting something better than what I got? Not really. But I was hoping...

The wedge thing (every time they used that word I loled because I thought of salads) didn't bug me at all because I ceased to hope for anything appealing on that front a long time ago (also, maybe Ballard finally got the saving the girl thing out of the way). But I kept hoping with Alpha...

Date: 2009-05-14 04:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Nah, the wedge thing was to make sure we don't forget that Ballard's the good guy.

What I've noticed (among the people aware of the shows problems, instead of those who eat it up) is that the people who are more critical of it liked the episode because it's the only time certain themes have ever been directly addressed, and the people who were more positive about it didn't, because they were hoping for some sort of revolutionary twist or reveal that didn't happen, as the episode largely reaffirmed things we already knew or expected.

I think Echo's feedback was positive because Caroline is essentially a good person who wanted to help people, and that influenced the personalities, whereas original!Alpha was a nutcase, and that influenced the feedback.

And...well...they've been trying to put a positive spin on the Dollhouse from the start, so I didn't really think they were going to stop now.

I just read this comment on twop:

"If we decide that the simple fact of working for the Dollhouse means you have no morals and would gleefully eat babies for a price, then there's no real point to watching the show other than for the final five minutes where everyone dies by fire."

And that is my view of the show in a nutshell. Only there the poster was arguing such a view is wrong and we should see them all as morally grey, even for selling Priya into sexual slavery. *headdesk*

I didn't care for Dollhouse very much at all (I loathed every character on it) but I kept being optimistic and hoping it would get better - I loved Buffy and Firefly so much, after all.

Unfortunately, that view seems to be the one I've come across the most outside of my f-list.

A friend of mine (rachelmanija-I think you watch her lj?) works in the film industry, and she had a post a while back that basically outlined why the concept is flawed and almost doomed to failure, regardless of quality, and it does a good job of addressing why the episode probably had no choice but to play out the way it did. She also mentions that anyone with a soul is going to be horrified by a lot of what goes on there. There are a lot of soulless people out there.

I think that Dollhouse COULD have been an awesome show, but they went the worst possible route with about 90% of their choices.

Date: 2009-05-14 05:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yeah, I occasionally browse her lj. She is awesome.

The thing is, even if it was unworkable and doomed to failure I wouldn't mind if it was good - it wasn't. It was unworkable AND bad, how is that for all-rounder.

Dollhouse would have been pretty good as a book. But written by somebody else. Heck, Silver Metal Lover did it better years ago and that involved actual robots.

Oh, Star Trek. It won't stop eating my brain! I think you'll really like it. It's even got a very unexpected, but very hot (imho) canon OTP going on! (And no, I don't mean Kirk/Spock, lulz.)

Date: 2009-05-14 04:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladysaotome.livejournal.com
I'd hesitate to call that canon, though I suppose it will be canon now. (And that's hugely spoilery for Trekkies - it NEVER happened originally.)

Date: 2009-05-14 06:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] equustel.livejournal.com
Well, the film made a pretty good excuse for building its own shiny new canon - so that's what I'm referring to. :)

Star Trek is one of the stories where I couldn't understand why they had so many fans. But well, we all have our tastes. ^^
But watching the trailer of the movie, it seems like one gigantic special effect... Uh, sorry. I didn't want to talk bad about something you like.

Have nothing against special effects... and I want to see GI Joe too... :) for the 'epic fail' effect. XD
With Star Trek I can't even get into the mood to watch it.

I get reallyyyy bored with special effects movies yet Star Wars, to me, is flipping awesome. I wander away when Transformers or GI Joe (or just about any other non-animated movie coming out anytime soon, guh) comes on. They had so much character development (at least IMO) for me it really kept my attention and made me fall in love with all the characters. that's something you don't normally get from 2 hours of big explosions.

LOL, star trek. I just got back from seeing it a second time, wth, self? Haha. I love star wars too, though. ;)

As I wrote before, we all have our likes and dislikes. For example I love the Babylon 5 story, but am no fan of Star Trek. Even after watching the trailer and hearing recs from my friends I'm not in the mood to see the movie at all.
Transformers... that's something else. It not only had a nice enough story - for me at last - so that after I wasn't thinking that I just throwed away 2 hours from my life, and even payed for it, but the feeling I've got in the movie, how a lot of people began to fan Optimus the first time they saw him on wild screen... that just ruled. XD That's why I want to watch the 2nd movie too. X3

We were lucky & able to take munchkin to any movie until she was close to two. She wasn't bottlefed & soon as it got dark, we'd settle down to nurse with a blanket drapped over us & she'd crash immediately afterwards.

Oooh, lucky. Ours is bottle fed and she also startles really easily. Taking her to something as loud as a scifi movie is guaranteed to cause disaster :)

I watched all 12 episodes of Dollhouse over three days. And while I enjoyed some parts of it, I completely agree that it has a lot of issues. A lot. One of which was/is Alpha. He was two steps from being a killer before Dollhouse. He become obsessed with Echo (what male on this show isn't? Oh, just Topher and Victor. *roll eyes*) He had 48 different people stuffed inside his head. He went even more crazy. Okay. Okay. But, his whole thing was that he wanted to get the girl and turn her into a "God" like him? What? Complete let down.

If there is a second season, the people behind Dollhouse need to do some serious reworking. SERIOUS reworking. I really do have to make a whole post about this show. Because, it does have some good points and good actors, but it has a lot of bad points. And some bad acting - from the so-called lead. :/

As for Star Trek - even people who have never seen the original show are loving it. I must see it at some point.

Yeah, the thing that bugs me about Dollhouse is that it could have been brilliant and ended up so pathetically mediocre.

Date: 2009-05-14 06:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] walkwithheroes.livejournal.com
Yes. And the worse part is no one: fans, people behind the scenes, etc seem to notice.

From: [identity profile] katranna.livejournal.com
what do you mean? Most of the people I talk about it to are all "yeahhhhhhh.... it's not really very good... but I still want to watch it." I thought its mediocrity was out for everyone to see. :-)

From: [identity profile] walkwithheroes.livejournal.com
Well, admittedly, I haven't talked to too many people. But, most message boards seem very focused on the show and are really enjoying it: they love Echo/Ballard and just dislike most of the other characters. I recall that when someone, somewhere, mentioned the issues, they were attacked. But, I agree that many people see the flaws. It's just that no one seems to want to know what to do.

I've not seen Dollhouse but this is the first time I've seen anyone talking about it without flailing about in ultra-fan mode like I do with Firefly. So there are definitely a lot of people out there who must just have starry eyes for anything Joss does..

The Star Trek movie is soooooooo good.
I've never seen it or knew anything about the original Star Trek so I was hesitant to go see it. But I'm so happy I did! It was one of the best movies I've seen all year.
I was all like "Omg, Spock is so hot!"
My boyfriend, who has seen the original show, was baffled too "Yeah...What did they do to him?"

Gah, Dollhouse. It sad how medicore it turned out to be. I carried on watching and was determined to finish the series (because of some sort of loyalty towards Whedon, yes, and remembering that except for Firefly, all of his series started out quite weak), but even I was defeated at one point - I haven't seen one of the standalone episodes, simply because the synopsis sounded really boring, and I couldn't bring myself to sit through a pointless hour of Eliza Dushku trying to prove she's a versatile actress.

I couldn't believe how they wasted Alpha's potential. It was nice to have Alan Tudyk back on my screen, but taking the most obvious route with your big ace serves only to assure the medicority of the series.

Well, the finale proved to me one thing: if miracle happens and Dollhouse gets renewed, I'm not going back for the second season, unless the writers do some SERIOUS rethinking over the summer. Ah, and Amy Acker sneakily takes over the leading lady spot. She rocked the material she was given.

We do but the baby doesn't like loud noises and the movie is likely to be mindblowingly loud. I don't want her to have a major freak-out just so I can watch a movie ...
