dangermousie: (Lobbyist hug by miss-dian)

Mmmm...

Yet another drama for me to be excited about: Swallow the Sun.

Starring two of [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie favorites, Ji Sung (the adorable woobie amnesiac/icy tormented businessman in Save the Last Dance; the really sweet doctor in New Heart) and Sung Yuri (screwed-up and doomed rich girl in Snow Queen; dummy with a heart of gold in Hong Gil Dong; sweet-natured heroine of a stepsibling romance in One Fine Day), it is the story of a tough man who changes when he meets a woman blahblahblah. I don't think it's a romance drama though. The man in charge is responsible for All In, Jumong, and Lobbyist, so I can tell he loves tough men (and tough ladies). One thing he loves more than tough men? Hurt/Comfort. Lobbyist was the most hurt/comfort drama I have EVER seen by a country mile, and that's saying a lot.

I can see the maker is in full form on that latter front, here:

My drama docket is already unmanageable: I haven't even been able to stat Strike Love and I am dying to, not to mention that my obsession with Spring Waltz means I am behind on all the airing dramas I actually AM following and yet there are new goodies piling on the plate. *happy sigh*

Can you tell me (just yes or no, since I'm a spoilerphobe) if Save the Last Dance has a happy ending?

Yes, really :)

It's like two awesome things for the price of one - poor lost woobie and icy upperclass guy. Heh. It also has the distinction of one of the most awful secondary girls ever - when I think of her I get such blistering blistering hate. (Amusingly enough, she and the leading man actually became an item in real life lol).

StLD has the distinction of being kdrama I watched the quickest. It's 17 eps and I watched 14 of it in a row. (Finished the last 3 next day) Granted, I was on a very very long flight (17+ hours) but still...I emerged from the plane in an almost hallucinatory state due to drama fever caused by compression of so much angst and kdrama plotlines into such a compressed space.

14 kdrama eps in a row?? I would die. (Speaking of, I finished Aishiteru to Itte Kure yesterday and it felt like no effort at all compared to kdrama. 12 45-minute eps? Felt like blowing through water.)

My brain felt exploded (btw, I was mistaken, stld is 20 eps - clearly drama fever killed my memory cells).

Did you like AtiK? I adore that drama...

LOVED IT. Though, my god, that heroine. D: Watching her was like nursing a low-level anxiety for how she'd screw up or embarrass herself next.

Am uploading your SW caps, btw, my net is just being uncooperative and making it slow.

I liked the heroine for the first half tremendously - she had a lot of common sense (e.g. in the whole sister situation) but then in the second half it's like they decided two grown-ups in love wasn't enough drama. I didn't find it unbelievable (she was young and uncertain etc etc) but it did drive me INSANE. I was so in love with TE's character and I am afraid I turned into one of those rabid, unreasonable fangirls who was all "how dare you do that, heroine! You shan't hurt the woobie!!! Eleventy!!!"

ETA: Thank you for the pics!

Btw, have you ever checked out Love Story with TE? He is the romantic (cranky, idiosyncratic) lead in that one and it's an awesome drama. I haven't finished yet and got sidetracked. Then there is also Blue Bird where he hooks up with both mother and then (years later, thankfully) daughter.

I am not as into jdramas as kdramas but I realized that if it's an older jdrama I'll probably like it more than a newer one.

Oh god, me too! I could understand her position, especially when she found the ring, because from her POV it was pretty incriminating (even if we as viewers knew the truth). But sleeping with Ken? Who she knew was in love with her? Hurting Koji like that? How selfish can you be? I also hated how she brought his deafness into every argument in the most trivial ways. "We can't listen to CDs together!" Really? That's the biggest roadblock in your relationship? I could understand if we were shown her frustrations mounting, like if his impairment kept inconveniencing her life in little ways that built up and eventually exploded, but we didn't get that. Instead she just popped out with "I'm tired of signing!" at the most random moments.

(His reactions always broke my heart, too. Like when she yelled about his deafness and he just held her with this resigned look on his face, like he'd always known it was coming, that he would always wind up alone. WOOBIE. I almost cried when he asked if he could keep the cat.)

Spoilers for the later eps, obviously. :)

I haven't tried any other TE dramas yet. I know I've mentioned this before, but it seriously BLOWS MY MIND that the gross perverted nose-picking womanizer from Bengoshi no Kuzu spent the 90s as a romantic hero.

I could understand both her lashing out (goodness' sakes - I have certainly blown up for no reason and repented quickly after) and even her cheating. Understanding doesn't mean excusable - I could see the cheating as this impulsive horrible mistake but still, not good not good at all.

(Funnily, I seem to prefer kdrama heroines to jdrama ones on the whole. I am usually very male-centric in my stories but in a lot of kdramas I take on the pov of the heroine which is awesome and unsual for me).

Side note: do you like hurt/comfort, sorta-incest (the heroine's choice is between her quasi-brother and something even more incesty), really strong heroine (arguably most kickass kdrama lady every), and hot guys with swords? Have you seen Damo yet? It's only 14 eps and it's 14 eps of pure awesome.

Heroine, a medieval policewoman (ostensibly a tea servant). She solves crimes, outfights any two men put together, is emotionally reserved and has a tragic backstory, all things normally reserved for male characters:

Image

The police division commander who says heroine is like his sister. For a certain value of sister, that is. You've seen kdramas, you know how that goes.

Image

Sexay, sexay rebel leader who the heroine is supposed to track down but might end up liking instead...

Image

There is also childhood love and incest....:)

I want someone to squee with me!

I will SQUEEEEEEEE with you! Damo blew me away! When it was over I told someone it was like watching a Korean Shakespearean tragedy. (LOL @ "sexay, sexay rebel leader"!) Man, I might have to rewatch that one soon.

I just finished the 1st episode of Strike Love and ran over to viikii to continue but no Strike Love on vikkii... argh, I'm so screwed! So far it's class Korean drama with debt-ridden, wacking parents and love triangles that start before puberty haha. It's my first k-drama since I gave up on BOF so I'm really up for it. Can't wait to see what you think.

It annoyed me more than it normally would've since Koji was a frigging saint with Hikaru. I mean, he was even going to leave her in the rain because Hiroko had moved in and it "wasn't only [his] home anymore." But then they have a (granted very awful) fight and Hiroko launches herself in the nearest pair of arms! Auuuuuuugh. When crazy little sister is bringing the sense, you know you're acting illogically.

The police division commander who says heroine is like his sister. For a certain value of sister, that is. You've seen kdramas, you know how that goes.

Okay, you had me at badass lady and I think this cinched my interest completely. XD

I am so excited over this. I am one of ten people in the world who liked Lobbyist and it has a bit of that vibe, plus I like the cast and the production team.

I don't know why there aren't more people who like Lobbyist. I really enjoyed myself, plus there was more than enough eye candy -- both females and males :D

I admit the politics/gun-running got a bit repetitive at times, but I thought it was a solid solid drama. I guess it fell through the cracks - it's not a romance, but it's not a period piece either where politics and stuff are accepted as topics. Plus, a lot of people hated Maria (which is a pity, I liked her. She was allowed to get messed up and harsh, which is usualyl only something guys get to do in dramas).

Oh man, I remember when I used to read your posts and you used to talk about watching 2093482 dramas at a time and I thought, "How in the world can she do that!?!?".

Now I know! I'm currently watching more than 6 dramas (which is A LOT for me) and it can get overwhelming but it's fun! :)

Same here dear. I'm watching EoE, Worlds Within and La Dolce Vita. Not to mention that I am a re-watching BOF, both the Korean version and the Tagalog dubbed one. hahahaha!
