I have just read a thread on AF for a Taiwanese drama because I was curious to see if it was something I would like.

And now I feel faintly ill. The drama? Knock Knock Loving You, or as [livejournal.com profile] katranna aptly renamed it "Knock Knock, I am about to be loving you whether you want to or not."

Why does it make me so rageful? Apparently part of the story is Guy A seeing the girl he likes kiss Guy B and raping her (or possibly "just" sexually assaulting her) to teach her what's what.

And this is the fangirl reaction.

I.

guys, dp u think WYX [Girl] can act very well?? Ive seen there promo clip on tudou, if anyone want the link I'll post it, I saw a few seconds of the ''rape'' and WYX and Dylan Kissing be4 then. I cant wait for that epsiode

Basically Dylan [Guy B] and WYX [Girl] were kissing in the park
MD [Guy A] saw it and then porbably out of anger forced WYX to have sex

More spicy!! XD

II.

haha i think i watched the promo clip too!
but according to md [Guy A], he sexually assaulted her to warn her and didnt really rape her.
cant wait for the next few episodes! yes yes the spicy scenes ^^ HAHAHAH!

III.

What is the difference between sexual assault and rape. As I said before Guan Xi [Guy A] loves WYX [Girl] and he thinks she is going to marry him. She plays with fire when she gives into her infatuation with Dylan [Guy B] and Guan Xi [Guy A] witnesses that kiss. He is understandably furious. Possibly what begins as an act of rage turns into firey passion. In the scene in the beach house on their date he could have made love to her. He could have easily seduced her but he holds back. I believe he wanted to wait until they were married because he truly loves her but.... Any way MD [Guy A] is truly stealing the scenes and making this his drama. I call him Mr Charisma. He is an Awesome actor. I can't wait for the rest of the episodes to come out. Despite the speech problems WYX [Girl] has major chemistry with Guan Xi [Guy A] and they are so cute together when they are dating and she is fighting her extreme attraction to him

IV.

i really really hope guan xi [Guy A] and zi wang [Girl] get together! please not be this be a typical drama where the girl just loves one man forever

V.

hmm as in he didnt really rape her, as in you know..
md [Guy A] said that the scene was merely to warn her to be obedient to him, and that he didnt really rape her, as in you know get down to doing it

Me: I want to find these fanbrats and murder them. Awwww, rapists = such good dating material! SICK.

On the bright side, I showed [livejournal.com profile] katranna first four eps of Veronica Mars and she enjoyed them. I've forgotten how good the show was - now I am sitting and rewatching the whole season 1. I think I am getting old because I see all the characters and am all indulgently going "awwwww, awesome kids."

You know, sometimes fans can totally get screwed with their thinking in order to justify things in their fandom. I'm sure i've done something (but never this type of thing ¬___¬) of that kind but for people to say stuff like that is... scary.

Yeah, a little bending of source material is fine but this is making me ill - also I am not sure how the drama handles it (I doubt as total evil, as the guy playing Guy A is quite popular) but I am certainly not bothering to watch the drama to find out.

I'm sure there's another drama (j/k/whatever) where an almost rape had the fangirls all swoony which was stupid (why am i thinking it's bof?) which made me *headdesk*. And if Guy A is the popular one then i'm pretty sure it's gonna get swept under some idiotic dominance statement 'cos he's the male lead right? And as such can do such things.

Which is shitty really. ¬__¬

Yup - there was kdrama East of Eden where the fangirls shipped one of the heroines with her rapist (and someone who got the cops to torture her prior). because he is sooooooo cute and feels bad later. STAB.

Never watched it lol but i'll take your word for it. And i think i've got BOF in mind 'cos of the whole thing with Domyouji/Jun Pyo doing stuff to Makino/Jandi at the start when she gets the red card. Also, the almost rape scene which, while he doesn't explicitly ask for, in a roundabout way is responsible for. With that in mind, it's the same sort of scenario right? Except we're ok with it? But not.

Gah. Does that make sense?

OH IT WAS ONLY TO WARN HER INTO OBEDIENCE, COME ON GUYS THAT'S TOTALLY OKAY. This isn't Dylan's character, is it?

No, thank God! It's Ming Dao's - I have only seen MD in one drama before: "Magicians of Love" - that drama was silly as heck but minus the raping. I disliked him ever since then and now I see my dislike will be permanently set in stone. UGH. Apparently, they are going to leave this an open ending (as opposed to book ending where she hooks up with Dylan) because fangirls luuuuuuuuv Ming Dao. Yikes.

Btw, are you watching Black and White, tw cop drama? It's so your thing - super slashable, tough ladies, and plenty of hurt/comfort to come.

Oh Christ. I'm not sure I want to watch this anymore.

I haven't started B&W yet, but tough ladies sound like the perfect remedy for the bad taste in my mouth.

B&W is delicious. The heroine literally flips the guy onto the hood of the cop car because he tries being smarmy.

She packs a gun and uses it.

I thought by definition sexual assault and rape are the same thing. Whatever the definition, I'm should be shocked that girls are squeeing over it, but I'm not considering I remember 70s romance novels.

I just don't know what the turn on is for girls and bad boys who aren't just bad, but despicable. I've dealt with this with the Robin Hood fandom over Guy of Gisbourne. The fangirls adore him and think he's the best thing since sliced bread and while I love Richard Armitage and the character, he's truly evil. His rap sheet includes trying to kill his illegitimate son, killing the woman he loved, random killing of extras, and just generally being a murderous bastard. Yet there are plenty of people who try to defend him and go on about how he's "misunderstood" and has good in him and blah. Pony up, people. There are some things I just can't forgive a character for.

kill his illegitimate son, killing the woman he loved, random killing of extras, and just generally being a murderous bastard

Ugh. Nothing wrong with being an interesting evil character, but trying to whitewash the evilness just because the guy is hot? I see it repeatedly in all sorts of fandoms and it never ceases to surprise me.

Yet these are the same people who will get all over the main character for little flaws. The double standard never fails to bother me.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I've seen that, too. Usually when the other character is a woman, clearly unworthy of the wonderful woobie, or a man who is a romantic rival.

I'm most definitely in the minority here, but to be honest, I don't see much of an issue with the plotline (not that rape = good, of course!), because it's a drama. Dramas are never going to be realistic in any way. I've seen this type of thing before, and it's not my favorite plotline, but whatever.

Maybe it's because I kinda grew up watching General Hospital, where one of the main couples fell in love after the dude raped the girl. I think I permanently screwed up my "wrong meter" from years and years of childhood soap opera watching.

Not that I agree with the fangirls. They're being ignorant there. But yes, Ming Dao fangirls are strong in numbers and passionate.

But I don't think you should judge Ming Dao on this (or MoL). MoL was NOT his best work, and he's actually quite good in everything else I've seen him in.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
But I do bring my RL values into this - I won't like someone like Kingone in B&W (not that we are supposed to like him) because he murders without reason. I won't like someone like Ming Dao in KKLY because he sexually assaults. Etc etc etc. I might be more accepting of weird/over-dramatic storylines, but that is different - I accept storylines I find improbable (two childhood lovers find each other, and then one gets amnesia; such-and-such is the prophesied warrior etc) but not storylines I find morally repellent.

No, a main character being a wannabe rapist is not a deal-breaker for me but the way it's handled is - Kimura Takuya is an incestuous murderer in Million Stars but I love that drama - it does not portray his actions as romantic and him as a wonderful person or a woobie we should root for. An interesting character? Yes. Past redemption? Also yes. I doubt idol drama like KKLY handles the sexual assault issue in any way other than "awww, poor woobie, she drove him to it" (might not, but I won't bother finding out).

You know, I think I am off MD for life (sorry, I know you like him). That makes two dramas which make me cringe and I don't find him attractive-looking, either.

Date: 2009-04-20 02:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] uisceros.livejournal.com
Ah, I see. I tend not to bring RL into drama watching much. I think that's why I don't get freaked out by stuff so easily. It's funny, because I don't accept highly improbable storylines as much!

Oh, I totally agree. I hate it when anything (books/tv/movies) do the whole "It's the girl's fault because she tempted him" thing. I have not seen a situation like that in dramas before, though. So while I also do not know if KKLY will do it, I hope they don't. Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu didn't do it, and that was an idol drama, so here's hoping! Don't let me down, Taiwan!

Heh! While I try not to judge actors on their roles, I DO judge on looks (shallow much?), so yeah, totally understandable to me if you don't find him attractive (I actually didn't much at first either). No need to be sorry!! I have quite a few actresses (no actors, oddly enough) I dislike for similar reasons.

To be fair, this is by far the most absurd thing I've heard of in twdrama - and kdrama has it too (east of Eden). Seriously, drama makers, just stay away from the topic of rape, because outside of Mars and The Outsiders, I don't think you've ever handled it properly or with sufficient gravity.

Btw, because I have turned into a mad pusher for it, have you checked out Black & White? It's a twdrama but not really an idol one.

EWWWWW. Argh I just watched the subbed version of the first episode and thought I'd try a bit more due to the whole Dylan and main girl but I'm pretty sure if I had to watch this rape fantasy play out, I would have to go and blind myself. I'll just check out the last ten minutes to see if they get together or not, preferably with Ming Dao's character dying a horrid death.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yeah, I was mildly considering watching it because I adore Dylan and he is not in enough things but oh God, no. I am going to stick to my "woman proficient with a sword and not afraid to use it" (PJMG) and "woman proficient with a gun and martial arts and not afraid to use it" (Black & White) dramas, thank you very much. Neither of them is likely to have a "positive" male character engage in raping.

Ugh, I like kissing/sexy scenes in dramas as much as the next person but when it goes to rape territory, I am NOT squeeing over "spicy" scenes, ffs. :/

I think AF has a mostly young userbase but it's still sad that they'd have these conceptions and be so ignorant about rape.

This forced me to get up and do something else before I ruined my day with nausea and anger.

As much as these posters infuriate me, the knowledge that this is their first reaction and, without explanation, would think nothing of such a reaction - that's, as always, so scary and immobilizing. That they could go so long - long enough to read and write and post - without someone SOMEWHERE telling them that rape is NOT OKAY under ANY circumstances, that - that is just so hard to deal with.

Allow me to introduce Fangirl(brat) logic;
"Is the guy hot? Then it's totally cool with a bit of rape."

That seems to be the attitude among quite a lot fangirls...creepy but true.
Sigh, let just hope they can separate fiction from reality.

I hope not too. Some fan girls are kinda crazy over their idols. I don't want anyone thinking that rape is okay. I watched the first 2 eps. I liked it at first because I thought the main girl seemed strong, smart, and intelligent. It's a good start to a drama but it went downhill. I will not watch it further because I know it will be a waste of time and I hate dramas that disapoint. I think someone needs to tell the fan girls. I don't think they realize their thinking is messed up.
