HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
I got lovely presents from Mr. Mousie and we watched the fireworks over the ocean at midnight. It was gorgeous.
In more fannish news, I started the Korean drama Which Star Are You From which so far (about half an ep in) looks very promising.

Kim Rae Won (whom I adore) is Choi Seung-Hee, a movie star whose life fell apart three years ago, when his sophisticated, adored girlfriend, Hye-Soo (Jung Ryu-Won), died in a car accident. Since then he's been doing his best trying to drink himself into oblivion and generally to disconnect with life. But just when he's decided to move on, the small town he happens to be in on his wanderings gives him a total shock: when he turns around he sees a woman who looks exactly like his dead girlfriend. Her name is Bok-Shil (also played by Jung Ryu-Won), and except for looks she has little in common with Seung-Hee's love: she is not poised, sophisticated, or college-educated. She is a country bumpkin who keeps goats (!!!), wears her hair in childish pigtails, isn't too picky about hygeine, and is cheerful and pushy.
Still, Seung-Hee cannot help but follow her and eventually fall in love with her. But did he fall in love with her for her or just because she happens to look like his dead girlfriend? Oh, and of course, since it's a kdrama, I have been promised plenty of other angst and obstacles and issues, like why does Bok-Shil look like Hye-Soo (no, it's not Hye-Soo come back from the dead with amnesia, though I would adore that sort of storyline. Is there a kdrama about it, other than Winter Sonata? I want the girl to get amnesia this time.)
So far it looks angsty and pretty, with a soundtrack to die for. I have been promised a happy ending, and KRW is one of my all-time favorites, but he tends to do dramas which are very popular but not my cup of tea (Love Story in Harvard, Gourmet etc) so I am excited to find one which seems to be my thing. And I really like Jung Ryu-Won. She and Daniel Henney ended up the characters I still liked by the end of Kim Sam Soon, and not the leads. So I am excited to see her as a lead.
Plus, there should be a lot of kissing! And I am in the mood for something swoonily romantic, and nobody does swoony romance like kdramas.

Date: 2009-01-01 06:44 pm (UTC)I'm intrigued already by the "you look exactly like my dead ex-girlfriend" but add in movie star/country girl and I'm completely sold. Also I didn't really like Jung Ryu Won's character in MNIKSS but SHE HAS AN AUSTRALIAN ACCENT and that will never not be cool.
I shall report back once I've watched it, but next in line is Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang. Which you also made me watch. You have a pimping gift!

Date: 2009-01-02 03:35 am (UTC)DGCH is, indeed, delightful (and very feminist) so I am glad you are watching it. One word of warning. It gets a bit slow in the middle for a few eps, after an awesome beginning 4+ eps, but then picks up again and becomes even more awesome. Honest! (I am warning because I know a couple of eps in the middle are a little sluggish and need ff, imo, so not to get discouraged).
I think with Sam Soon it was a case of inflated expectations for me. It was a fun enough kdrama romcom, but it was so built up by others that it didn't live up to the hype. I actually liked Sam Soon herself very well up until the middle when she did something which triggered my automatic 'no way back from it' buttons, which is a very personal thing (it's when she was OK with dating Sam Shik even though she knew he still was nominally dating other girl and not insisting he break up with his gf first).

Oooo
