Watching Australia finally made me do something I should have done a long time ago: start converting my 2003 pictures of my month in Australia and New Zealand into digital form (back then I still used film). It's going to take a while as I have tons and tons of pictures, but I am rather pleased with the result so far (I didn't use negatives but photos to be scanned instead because I wanted to see how it went).

So here is the first batch, 50+ photos of Australia and New Zealand, from August 2003. And yes, the colors are real.

View of the Olgas from a helicopter (The reason there might be odd columns of light in this photo and some of the other ones is because of scanning photos v. negatives. I will try to convert from negatives next.)

Climbing the monolith that is Ayers Rock:

It looks like the surface of the moon.

From the air. At one time, it was the bottom of the sea:

As I said, moonscape:

Yes, these colors are real. At sunrise.

And before, almost sunrise.

The Olgas:

I forgot to mention how large the sky seemed there. Like you were at the edge of the world.

Also, how oddly new, as if you went back in time millions of years.

The colors really are incredible:

On a camel farm, the first (and only) time I rode a camel. It was surreal and wonderful.

View from the camel :)

Views of Sydney from the water:

Street-scene:

Canberra:

And then I went to New Zealand and fell even more in love.

We took the TransAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth and it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

This is a braided river:

Auckland as seen from the ferry.

One of the suburbs of Auckland. Yes, the cone shape is because of a volcano:

On the bus in the South Island:

Ahh it was so great to see your pictures. I even felt a little homesick for Sydney :)

The trans-alpine train is one of the greatest train trips in NZ! I live not that far south from there in Dunedin, although sadly I haven't done it in a while :(

I loved Sydney so much, even more than Melbourne.

That train trip was one of the most awesome things in my life!

Love the pictures! I would love to see Ayers Rock! :D

Nice NZ pictures too. I did the Tranzalpine years ago, and it is such a lovely trip. These have made me homesick! (but in a good way, really - more like... pride!)

Ayers Rock was great to climb even if I was exhausted by the end...

Tranzalpine was so incredible!

These are stunning! Did you scan the photos with a regular flatbed scanner? Or do you have something else for scanning photos?

I have a scanner but the quality wouldn't be good enough for this. I took them to a professional shop and they scanned it for me on their super-duper photo scanners.

Ah, they did a great job! I have some slides from a trip to Mexico that I'd like to scan. Yes, I should find some pros and let them do it! (if I can find someone good for a reasonable price ;->)

I went to Ritz Camera and it was fairly inexpensive.

I always love your photos, you've been such beautiful places. But I'm not sure any of them compare to New Zealand. It really does look like a different world.

NZ was really really surreal. Plus, it was during the LOTR fever so we did the geeky thing and toured various filming locations...

It's always nice to see NZ from a visitors stand-point. Living here sometimes you forget how beautiful it is!
