I am thinking of checking out Roswell, after
vierran45's lj entries on it. Do you think I'll like it? Does anyone have any opinions on the show? I like angst, pretty people, good plots and snark. Something like Firefly, Farscape and Buffy is completely my thing, and something like SG-1 or CSI or 24 leaves me cold. Which end of the spectrum is it more like?
Also, because of the "getting back into Buffy" mode, I have been looking at some fanfic, and I am rather amused that it seems a custom in that fandom to meld couple's name to indicate shippiness. E.g. a Buffy/Angel fic is labeled "Bangel" or Buffy/Spike as "Spuffy." Which led me to imagine other ship names in that fandom. How about Ruffy? Biley? Bike, instead of "Spuffy?" Xanya sounds like an exotic Scandinavian name...I think I prefer nice "/" between couples names.
Saw the Serenity trailer on scifi. Taped the Serenity trailer on scifi. Brought the tape all the way to NYC to show my temporarily computerless friend. Watched it again. Mulled on it with said friend. Do you think I am obsessed? Naaaah.
Thoughts on it follow. Behind the cut for really spoilerphobic people. But there is nothing in them that wasn't in the trailer.
First off, I have a new favorite Mal quote. The misbehave one. Second, I caught a glimpse of Inara, standing behind Mal and giving him a look when he makes a comment about staying out of trouble or similar. This is sad, but I am excited as it fanned my M/I shipper frenzy. I think Inara's "business" is over for good, because it's one thing to travel on a mildly disreputable ship doing other business while you conduct yours, and it's another to be associated and on the run with the people who are taking on the Alliance government. Somehow I don't think Mal would be terribly grieved by it, though.
River as a weapon is pretty much a continuation of "Objects in Space" discovery, so yay. Oddly enough, didn't see Kaylee, even though I know she is in the movie.
I bet a part of Mal loves taking on the Alliance (as it looks like they are doing from the trailer), after Serenity Valley (saw the deleted scene, and did they just leave all the wounded and surrendered soldiers there just to die from starvation and wounds? Argh). Much better catharsis than picking fights with Alliance sympathizers on anniversary of the defeat. And I do love that Mal will go to the bat in such a way for River. Yup, she's one of his crew.
Loved the confrontation between Mal and the Bad Guy, when the BG says that every day Mal keeps this going, more people die. Mal: "Do you think I care?" BG: "Of course you care." Because...I don't know why, but that is just so right and so Mal (because I hate how they never address in a lot of scifi or adventure the fact that the hero's heroics are getting people killed and if he is a decent guy, which Mal is, deeply, it has to really haunt him).
But I am confused by one aspect of the trailer. They say "6 rebels on the run" (and that is technically not correct, as there are only 2 rebels, Zoe and Mal, but whatever) + River. That's 7, so what happened to the other two characters? I know all 9 are in the movie. Odd.
Also, cgi is pretty pretty pretty pretty.
Please, no Serenity spoilers (other than that trailer of course) in comments, k?

Date: 2005-08-01 03:22 pm (UTC)Farscape didn't implode. It did get cancelled, but it did a miniseries that finished off all the planned arcs, so the whole thing is complete and implosion-free.
I think your comment is true for all shows in general though. Alas.

Date: 2005-08-01 05:31 pm (UTC)There are only 3 seasons (or 2 and a 1/2, since the third season is only 15 episodes), and the first two are the better ones IMO. In the third season they clearly run out of ideas, and try all kinds of stuff that mostly doesn't work that well.
But, it has pretty people, some snark, angsty relationships (though the together/not-together back-and-forthing get a bit much sometimes), some humour, evil government agencies, etc.
