I saw "Objects in Space" today. I can't believe there are no more episodes. And just when the storyline was beginning to get going (I taped the trailer for Serenity shown earlier today on scifi, and it's wonderful how much it ties up to this episode).
First off, Jubal Early (which amusingly enough was a name of a Civil War general) is scum. And damn scary scum at that.
You know how I said when I first started watching the show that it would take a miracle for me to like River? Well, consider me converted. She is so childlike when she is not freaking out, it makes you hurt for her lost innocence and her lost sanity.
The opening montage was fascinating, her use as a weapon is really substantiated. Not only is she deadly effective, interestingly enough, she is a lot more lucid and clever when in a battle-type environment.
On other mystery front, I found it interesting that Jubal said that Book was not a Sheperd. Hm.
What was clear a long time ago (River is a psychic) is out in the open in this episode. She can sense the summary of the thoughts the people are thinking, and she can't turn it off.
And now we get to my favorite topic: Inara and Mal.
Their conversation in the beginning is, what else, full of pain. You can feel Mal's pain. I love that River hears their thoughts (hers are asking him to tell her already. I think she is dying for an excuse to stay), and his, heartbreakingly, is that none of it matters. Argh.
I also love that Inara could read Early (reading his motivations freaks him out) and when he hit her...argh! I love that Mal notices her face and he touches it and it feels as if the touch burns them both.
Poor Kaylee. That scene with Early was frightening, uncomfortable to watch. Have I mentioned I hate Early?
And now we come to Simon. I love the opening Simon/Kaylee shippiness. It's wonderful to see him relaxed, happy, carefree. He really is only that way with Kaylee. And I love I that when later he tells her the hospital was home, she doesn't jump down his throat the way she usually does, but ask him if there is anything that makes being here worthwhile and he touches her cheek (Guuuuh) but then Book walks by and the moment is lost.
And I love Simon when he is taken prisoner by Early. He knows Early will kill him, but says that he will not have his last act be a betrayal of his sister. Simon is certainly not a coward. And then Early tells him that if he won't help, Early will rape Kaylee to death and the look on Simon's face. All the interactions between Simon and Early, with Simon uncowed, and snarking, and never giving up, and fighting Early even after he is shot? Guh.
I also loved the interaction between Mal and River at the end, when she asks the permission to come aboard and he looks at her with affection and probably sees her as a person, as opposed to a burden, for the first time and there is a lovely big brother-little sister moment there, though of course nowhere near the strength between the bond between him and Kaylee. Mal is really a protective person, isn't he?
Poor River, thinking she isn't wanted. Awww. But I love her at he end, playing with Kaylee. Kaylee is infinitely patient, isn't she?
I also watched the deleted scene from Serenity, and the situation in the battle of Serenity Valley was even more horrible. The Alliance just defeated them and left them in the Valley, to starve or die of wounds No wonder Mal is still haunted by that (and his defiance in naming his ship Serenity becomes even more poignant because he does it as a remembrance, I think).
If I didn't know the movie was coming, I'd go spare.
