I don't know what'a wrong with me. I almost never like bad guys in fiction. You know girls swooning for the antagonists in TV shows or books? That is not me. I go for the good-hearted, clean-cut guy helping old ladies across the street.

Yet the character in East of Eden I am currently most fixated on (with the exception of the lead) is Myung Hun.

Heeelp!

There is no doubt Myung Hun is not a good person. There are so many things he does which are wrong, and (if the spoilers I read are true), at least one thing that is unforgivable.

But - he is so fascinating. The actor (whoever he is) is just so incredibly intense that when he is on screen I get glued to my computer. And of course I can't help but get interested in the posessive, one-sided, unhealthy love he has for Ji Hyun. It's not a good relationship at all, but it's so good to watch. It's literally crazed and I don't think he can live without her, but his growing up in the psychotic household led to him dealing with this emotion in a completely abnormal way.

It's just - he does something horrible and I want to stab him in the face, and then a minute later he breaks down with Ji Hyun and I just want to give him a hug and take him away from his creepy family.

And of course there is the fact that he is not really the son of the evil bad guy but of the Union leader, and was switched at birth, and so all his scenes where he is so horrible to his birth mother and is all 'stop accusing my father' are very ironic and I can't wait to find out what happens when he learns the truth. You know, it's just as well they were switched, because Dong Wook is smarter and more determined and if he was brought up by ruthless bad guy would be even more effective.

Plus, he is not hard on the eyes.

Also, I just got to the scene where Dong Chul was forced to kidnap Grace or else bad guys were going to hurt the pregnant wife of his friend (and he was on his knees beaten and begging) and then he 'kidnapped' Grace (she went willingly) and she thought it was for money and she was so hurt and telling him he should die...What is wrong with me? Why am I more fixated on characters when they are desperate and hurt?. Seriously, I ship DC/Grace so much. OMG, the look in his eyes when he sees she used to cut herself. And the dance scene. *dies*

And the chemistry between them is insane actually. And then she demands to know if she is loveable and guys with guns are making them separate and he is trying to save her at the risk of his life and she repeats her question and he nods. OMGOMG. You know, when he is pushed to the wall and messed-up, he is exactly like his younger self.

MH and JH in all their dysfunctional glory.

DC is forced to kidnap Grace and does so.

She shows him her wrist scars.

She really has no self-preservation.

Oh, how I loved this scene! "Promise me, if we escape, you are going to fall in love with me." Mmmmm.

Brief moment of confusion!

Isn't he the one you were talking a lot about how much you hated him over the weekend? (Not objecting to change in opinion, just clarification.)

I don't think so. I hate his Dad pretty consistently :P. I mentioned a brief comment about hating him in my little 'drooling over SSH' post, but I think that's it. It was during the 'hate' part of the love/hate thing.

MH and JH in all their dysfunctional glory.

Strictly speaking it sounds like it's mainly his dysfunctional glory... :)

I just saw episode 11 and you are going to love it. There is so much more pain and angst between MH and JH and the brothers. OMG. I don't know how much more torture these people can go through. I just don't know what is going on in the writer's head. But obviously, it touches chord with some people *wink*.

Ahahahaha. You know me too well.

Ji Hyun is nice but not very interesting unless she interacts with Mr.Crazypants. Whenever she and her bf come on screen I get so bored. They are both nice people who would have a nice marriage but I don't feel like watching blandly nice.

I am also amused he is such a crazy jerk now because he was so nice as a kid and she treated him exactly the same. No wonder he switched tactics :P

Ooooh, yes. The angstier and more messed-up this drama gets, the more I love it (well, that, and the less Dennis "piece of wood" Oh there is on my screen).

I don't know how much more torture these people can go through.

I know exactly how much: 39 more episodes! And even then, chances of more than half the cast making it out alive are pretty slim.

I have to say the only storyline that hasn't grabbed me so far (I finished ep 8) is Dong Wook. Maybe he is too goody-two-shoes for me at the present. The story of someone radicalizing because the system is broken is not uninteresting, but I prefer revenge and obsession.

Oh, and I live for the day everyone finds out the baby switcheroo.

I like Grace. She's very cute.

At least, based on your picspams and my exhaustive reading and note-taking to make sure I knew who DW and DC were.

LOL. I like her too. Plus, the hero is so mired in angst and family tragedy, he needs someone spunky.

Also, I do not want to ship him with the other lead (he hasn't yet met) on principle because the soompi thread is full of the shippers for them because the other lead is played by a very popular actress and so they were rabid-shipping them before they even met or disregarding the fact they aren't supposed to be an OTP for all we know. Apparently they did have one meeting scene in ep 11 and fangirls are super-swooning and I am irritated because: hello. Ship once it turns shippy, not before! Argh.

I don't think I know the answer to this: what's your take on fanfic?

(those two things are related, at least in my head)

It's fine in fanfic. I don't read uncanon fanfic but plenty of people like it and as far as I am concerned, why not?

But basically the soompi forum thread is all 'these will be the greatest canon OTP ever' and that's where it gets me. Whyyyyy? Why is it canon, why, just because the actress is more famous? It just makes me more perversely not want to ship them even if they do become a canon couple. The fangirls just assumed that they would be the most awesome on-screen couple in creation before these two not only had any interaction but before the lady was even on screen for a second. It's sort of like Harmonians who argued HH should have been canon because Hermione was more prominent than Ginny.

I have no objections to people shipping whatever fanon ship they like, however unlikely. It's the assuming that this is canon and hating the interferer with their ship of choice for no canonical reason of hate that I can see that gets on my nerves.

Well, we'll find out who the OTP is... or you will, and I will learn through picspams, heh.

So they're hating on cute Grace just because their character hasn't even hit the screen yet or met DC? I agree, annoying.

Yeah, basically. The funny thing is, the actress they are rooting for is my favorite Korean actress. But I am so irritated, that this doesn't help. Plus, I think her character is better off with the younger brother, Dong Wook. They are friends already (just met in ep 8), and they can be political rebels together. Hero doesn't need political headaches on top of all his other woes.

Alright so I've finally caught up with my EOE... geeze. So much drama in just 4 episodes... I feel like it should be illegal or something. ;)

Myung Hun, yeah someone needs to stab him in the face. I can kind of understand the strange fascination because the actor is quite good. His character so weak though. I think when he actually finds out his mother is not his birth mother that will really drive him over the edge. He's already appalling close, but that might be the puff of air to send him over.

Ji Hyun... I think I may hate her most of all. She didn't ask to be the object of Myung Hun's obsession, but she isn't portrayed as standing up for herself much either. I can't believe she betrayed Dong Wook!

I agree the chemistry with Dong Chul and Grace is very good. I like her spunkiness, but I do hope she grows up some soon as her princess-esque ways & words wears on the nerves at times.

Yeah, the actot who plays MH is incredible but I can't wait to watch the character fall apart. Horribly. You know, if you think about it, it is a pity because he was such a nice kid: he had a potential to be a good person, but now he is just a monster.

JH: I cut her a lot of slack. She is very traditional. And I don't blame her for her confession. They were torturing her for days, I can only imagine how awful it must have been (yeah, MH's love is so great. Makes me sick).

I too hope Grace grows up. 38 eps to go so good hope for that. I think she is being extra abrasive now because she is feeling betrayed and yet still can't help but like him. I am especially curious about her wrist scars.

Me too... 3 different women characters with those scars so far. That seems a bit high... but it is EOE.
