This is Dan. He is like an uglier, younger, less talented Elijah Wood. I think we are supposed to root for this young man and his crush on Serena but I want him to be eaten by a snake.

This is Nate. He is very very handsome and very very dim. Both these qualities leave him singularly equipped to become a gigolo for a rich older woman, which is what apparently happens to him in S2.

This is Chuck. He looks like a gargoyle, smokes up, and loves to dispense bon mots. Clearly he thinks he is in Igby Goes Down. I foresee a future for him discovering true love with a hunky poolboy named Diego, sometime after his fourth divorce.

This is Blair. She is auditioning for Paris Hilton, minus the blonde hair and the porn tape (though seeing the way she was jumping Nate in the middle of the party, there might be the latter in her future). If there is anyone on this show who screams 'future plastic surgery fangirl' it is her. Also, she clearly buys her clothes at Harajuku.

This is Serena. She is blond and therefore virtuous. I think she deserves to be stuck with Dan because they are equally dull. Or Nate...she can pet him and take him for walks and maybe get him a doggie bowl.

This is Jenny, Dan's younger sister. She is the only someone normal here and I think should get off this show stat.

Oh, look, a TV parent! Which means he will be utterly ineffective.

Nate practices for his future profession:

And Chuck tries a little date rape. Nothing like those oldfashioned boys, is there?

I think there was only so much vapidity I could take and I turned the ep halfway in. Let's see if I am brave enough to continue :)

I hate all of them, half the first ep in. If I absolutely must watch high school students, I much prefer this:

Why would people rather watch this American crap when they could have Takki?

And Takki can actually act, unlike any of these people!

Exactly! I don't get why people love this show so much. ._. It's the same with their love for Twilight.

I'm amazed that you attempting are to watch this show. I have watched a few episodes of it. All I can say is that I hate this Chuck Bass creature.

I like some some of the actors, I like the girl that plays Serena and I have always loved Kelly Rutherford and as well as Margaret Colin, who appears in some of the episodes.

I don't tend to enjoy series associated with Josh Schwartz. I watched The OC for Melinda Clarke and because my Grandma was a fan. It was fun watching it with her. I ended up enjoying Autumn Reeser in the final two seasons of it, and a few of the other actors, but that was about it!

Chuck Bass is...ugh.

Seriously, attempted date rape twice in one ep? What a charmer.

I tried the OC and the few eps made me long for a bloody workers revolution to rampage through the cast.

I haven't watched the pilot episode but I know about the attempted date rape from reading my friends' list. The episodes that I have seen are from later in the first season when he supposedly gets more sympathetic. Whatever. I think I may be too old to get his appeal.

HA! I can relate to that a bit.

I have never been one for assholes in fiction or in rl, so yeah. I can go for someone who is damaged and lashes out but that is a big difference.

I often enjoy fictional assholes but I don't like it when they are made into romantic leads. And, yeah, it is definitely a different story if the character is damaged in some way.

The first episode was REALLY REALLY bad and I haaated it but then it got marginally better and prettier. I still can't take the show seriously though and always mock it but it's addicting and fun anyway. The girl who plays Jenny is really only 14/15 and is already being slutty and partying, haha. It's already too late for her!

That is why she should go to a public school and wear clothes that cover things and stop with the lipstick! if I was tarted up like that at 14-15, my parents would have killed me.

But Chuck tried to date rape two girls! He better be an abuse case or something because otherwise...dieeeee.

AHAHAHAA. I've only seen the first half of episode 1 as well, but only because I saw it on a plane and the plane landed before I could finish. heh. I wasn't heartbroken about it though.

I haven't seen any of the first season yet, but I still live in hope that if I did I could see Nate's future as the plaything of an older woman laid out before me.

It really gets so much better. The more you get into it, you begin to learn that there are different layers to all the characters beyond what you've picked up so far - for instance, Serene is certainly not virtuous (no matter how much Dan wants her to be), and Blair is actually the anti-Paris (she aspires to be like Audrey Hepburn, and desperately wants to get into Yale).. and Chuck... well, he's unrepentantly a jack ass, and it only gets better.

This made me laugh so hard.

Oh, look, a TV parent! Which means he will be utterly ineffective.
Parenting, schmarenting. He has a gallery and a rock band; he lives in a NY loft. And did you see his hair? You obviously don't appreciate how hard he has worked to achieve this level of hipness. ;)

Gossip Girl is just that kind of show that brought a still struggling network some extra time to stop flailing. Right now, GG in it's second season is lacking a bit (hmmm, all that hype crashing down on them?) but the ratings are solid.

Trust me, the show gets much MUCH better.
Blair and Chuck go from being annoying little twits to being the most awesome characters (very very flawed but still very awesome nonetheless) on the show.
And you'll probably hate Jenny if you make it to the end of the season. And Rufus is actually pretty awesome (at least imo). But Nate is very stupid though.

I never saw the first season but ONTD jammed Chuck/Blair down my throat so I decided to give it a try and watched the second season so far (as long with bits and pieces of the first season, Chuck/Blair mainly) and I have to say that the show is what it is. A guilty pleasure. If you go into knowing you won't be getting any more intelligent or won't be making any meta discussions based on the characters, then it's okay. It's just a show with pretty clothes (*guh* I would kill for some of their accessories and clothing!) and pretty (well, not pretty, the only one I find kind of attractive is Nate) and unrealistic situations. Hopefully, I won't get dumber watching it, but since it's just a TV show, I don't have to worry about it! :)

OMG! I'm actually not the one catching up with a show, for once! ;)

I actually quite like GG. It's rather vapid and shallow but hey eye candy, and it's entertaining. And yes, as others have said, Chuck is multilayered. I hated him too at the beginning but he's actually quite compelling.

Gargoyle, hee.

It gets better. I love Chuck. SO MUCH. But you have to suspend a lot of disbelief to watch. And also over look the whole "WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER? OR FATHER?" aspect of it all.

From: [identity profile] animeshon.livejournal.com
Yeah I might have to watch some there (I'm just worried about the bandwidth usage and I like to watch them on my TV). No real dl problems but my flatmate and I only have 40Gb to share between the two of us (and that includes uploads) so we can only download 1 episode a night. My friend has unlimited internet though so I usually get him to download anything that is already finished. I really hate NZ internet! :(

I skipped the entire first season. I say, it's not watchable until teenaged sons of white-collar convicts start bleating about their virtue, or catty brunettes start proving how truly whipped their wannabe-date rapist scum of an ex-boyfriend really is.

Gossip Girl is actually kind of enjoyable when you leave your brain at the door. I hate Dan AND Jenny, barely tolerate dull Serena and yet, I watch it. It's the kind of show that you watch to make fun of everyone and everything, want to kick the "super couple" in the face with a thick boot on and are appalled to admit that the character you like the most happens to be a sexually deviant asshole (yeah, that would be Chuck).

It's dumb but sparkly and shouldn't be mistaken for the "it's so terrible that I want to rip out my own eyes" unwatchable variety of CW television (I'm looking at you 90210).
