If you have time for only one jdrama, make it Utahime...

Yes, this post is a converting post about my new drama darling, Utahime. Utahime, which came out in 2007, is a jdrama set in the 1950s on a remote fishing island. The story centers around a young soldier who washed ashore on the beach 10 years ago, right after the end of the war, wounded and with no memory of his past life, due to the war trauma. The villagers gave him the name Taro, and he ended up being taken in by the family of the village projectionist, and falling in love with the projectionist's feisty daughter, Suzu.



It stars Nagase Tomoya, who is a huge favorite (he is a rare combo of someone who makes me weak in the knees at his hotness and someone who can act) and Aibu Saki as Suzu (she is so adorable, that if I wasn't married, I'd be tempted to switch sexual orientation).



I am only an ep in (haven't had a chance to watch much of anything this weekend) but am madly in love and thus bring you this picspam of ep 1 in hopes of convincing you to watch!

I really like Merry, the woman who owns the bar and who used to sing in Tokyo.



Suzu decides she wants to win a singing contest because the prize is a 3-wheel car and she knows Taro wants it. Awww.

It's Taro. He's come to cheer her up. Yay!

Oh God, I ship them so hard!



And thus this shot makes my heart melt like butter...



My fave scene in the ep! Her thank-you hug gets a bit overenthusiastic.

If I didn't ship them before, the way he looks at her when she defies singing mobster, would do it.

She loses, of course, and OMG, she is weeping to Merry that she really wanted that car as a present for Taro for his birthday and now she ruined it and he overhears and realizes why she was trying so hard and OMGOMGOMGOMG.

Woo-hoo! There is a little framing story set in modern time, but the drama itself takes place in the 50s which is awesome because not many dramas are.

Suzu is one of my favorite jdrama ladies. And she isn't anything "special," she isn't a reincarnated warrior or badass assassin, she's just really sweet and down-to-earth and makes you root for her.

yup. Only he's Latino and not cute at all. I'm boggled. :)

I think the main difference(apart from that Nagase is just hotter) is the way they carry themselves - Nagase's carriage is full of such confidence.
