dangermousie: (Kara Lee confession)
[personal profile] dangermousie
I have now finished the fourth episode (or third, if you count the Premiere as one ep).

Mmmmm...love it.

I love the snark. A lot of the dialogue is very funny. And I love that the crew plays practical jokes on each other (as Mal with telling Simon Kaylee is dead) as I have never seen it on a scifi show before.

I love the fact that Mal and Zoe seem to do their missions together and are best friend and are opposite genders but there is no sexual tension there whatever. Yay!

River really annoys me. I have no patience for mentally wonky people, and I really hope the movie is not all about her (as the trailers make it look). As to Simon, he reminds me a bit of Wesley from Angel and I am torn between going "awwww, and giving him a cookie" or thwapping him. He is a devoted brother. Pehaps too devoted.

I really love Mal's very weary and rather downtrodden nobility. It feels as if after the war he's tried to beat it out of himself, but it hasn't worked. He is also both an optimist and a cynic at the same time, which is kind of a bizarre combo but it works. I love that he returns the medicines to that town when he realizes what he stole, and I equally like that when the bad guy's underling hreatens him, he sucks him into the propeller. I love it that he tells Simon that the reason he won't kill him in his sleep, is because if he kills him, Simon would be on his feet, facing him and with a gun in his hand. And I love that even six years later, the defeat in Serenity Valley still hauns him: he decks Simon for saying he works for Alliance, and he ends up starting a fight in that Bar with Alliance sympathizers (my favorite exchange (paraphrased) is "Alliance guy: You know, your coat is kinda brown. Mal: It was on sale.") He really seems to be protective of the crew, especially Kaylee (who cracks me up, with her name on her cabin in colored letter and Xmas lights strung around).

And I love his actions in the Reavers episode. The way he tries to get through to the Alliance captain, the way he feels pity and horror for the survivor etc.

I adore Jayne, or "Bouncer" as I refer to him. He is hilarious in his uber-pragmatic self-interest and he makes me laugh more than anything else on the show.

Inara? Love her. Favorite moment? Any time she and Mal snark at each other (love his crack about her clients' bank accounts having an aura). And a bit where she reveals matter-of-factly that she prays for him. I also love her getting him and Zoe out of the mining camp by stating they were her indentured servants who took her stuff and ran away. She slaps him which I bet she wanted to do for a long LONG time. I wonder why she stays around though? (Don't spoil me, if there is anything more than what she says).

I am totally into Mal/Inara now. The way they snark at each other, and steal glances when the other is not looking, and the way he touches her shoulder when he wants her to get into her ship and hide from the Reavers, and then you can just sense this tension at that little touch, as if they avoid touching...yum.

Simon/Kaylee I can see, except he is very weirdly attached to his sister. Too much maybe.

And usually I am slash-blind, but even my husband picked up on Kaylee/Inara vibes. Hmmmm...

So yeah, good show all around, even if they do a bit too much talking about how cool Mal is. Yeah, I agree, he is cool. No need to repeat, I am convinced.

Oooh! If you've gotten through 4, that means next up is "Our Mrs. Reynolds," yes?

You're in for *so* much fun!!!

Oh, that's good times!

It's funny, I remember in the abstract how much I like the series but I forget how much I really enjoy the episodes...

I'm trying to get my cousin to e-mail me the entire series. I thought the previews for the movie looked pretty good, except I had no idea what was going on because I've never seen it.

Wash and Zoe are actually my favorite pair. I love that they're so opposite but they go together perfectly. And Wash just cracks me up. He obviously adores his wife, yet even though she's the "warrior" out of the pair, they see each other as equals.

Wash and Zoe are very sweet, but there is no tension or angst there, so while I go "cute" they don't push my buttons the way Mal & Inara do.

Inara and Mal are just to coy for me. Im the straightforward person who prefers her romances to the point. Even Padme/Anakin was less coy than that.

See, I am all for "I can't declare my wuv for you" type in fiction. I love P/A but it was "I want you, now now now" :)

...uhm.

*looks shifty*

Anyway, if you already have the love this early, you are in for such a treat, because you haven't even gotten to the really, really awesome episodes yet. On the funny side, you have the complete hilarity of Our Mrs. Reynolds and Jaynestown coming up. On the just damn awesome side, you still have Ariel, War Stories, and Objects in Space.

Eeee. I'm excited for you.

Oh and Safe is the magnum opus of CSI if that's what you're looking at.

Oh, I don't mind her being the focus, as long as she doesn't get the most screentime. Because she is not Mal she is batshit.

Oh, the movie, as my poodle put it, is MAL TIMES A BAJILLION. And it is goooood.

So glad you're enjoying it. And it keeps on getting better and better too :-D I'm inclined to agree with you about River as a character...but she's kind of more than that, which will also gradually become clearer in a muddy sort of way. Tee hee ;->

She seems to have empathetic abilities. But she is this show's Baltar. A little goes a long way.
