Just as I was about to say "Well, to look on the bright side, even with all the other catalogue of horrors, at least there is no self-mutilation or similar," we get to the repeated attempts at self-eye-gouging.

OK.

Man, did they have therapists/trauma surgeons/rape counselors in ancient fantasy world? Because they would get plenty of work.

Also, since there has been no blood-curdling awfulness for about ten pages, I wonder what dreadfulness will happen next?

But I have to say Acheron's older sister super-rocks. I imagine her as a common-sense Victorian schoolteacher type with hair in a bun, even though it's completely inaccurate in any respect. She is completely unfazed by all the angst/evil/craziness around her and just does what she thinks she should. Also, how did she manage to escape the evil/crazy/rapist/incestuous/torturer gene, I am not sure, but yay!

ETA: Great. And we are back to the pit of super-misery only worse. Man, I am not reading this book before going to sleep, it's going to give me nightmares. I can't read this thing in one (or two or three) sitting, I need breaks.

ETA2: According to the preface Kenyon seems to be working out some of her own abused childhood issues. Yikes.

I suspect I'm the only spoilerphobe in the world who reads these books. And I don't care about spoilers for them.

Eye gouging is always fun.

Repeated eye-gouging! He is all 'you say I am not cursed, but I totally am. I tried to gouge my eyes multiple times but they always come back. Because Gods hate me.' Yikes.

Seriously, I have a really high tolerance for fictional angst and h/c but all this is making me horribly squeamishly ill. Not in a bad way (i.e. I still think it's a good book) but still...

I also think his sister should have her own book, except since she is in the past, unlikely. She is totally common-sense and strong-willed and unflustered. Whether it's rescuing her 16 (???) year old brother from an evil incestious s/m brothel or sleeping with Apollo, she got the equal 'can do' attitude :P

I wouln't say I'm spoilerphobic about Kenyon's books, since I've waited ages for her to finally get Acheron's story...

I will continue to cut then (hmm, perhaps unfortunate choice of words :P)

I just wanted to make sure everyone was OK with spoilers before I stopped cutting, and so now I know so I will continue to cut :)

I want! I want! I want! Damn, I want to read angsty Acheron, I mean he's going to be 10 times more tortured than Zarek and he's one of my favourite Dark Hunters! I love my guys twisted and tortured. I need to read this book ASAP!

He is not just 10 times more tortured, it's like to the exponential power of 100. Seriously, this just might be the most messed up background I've read of anyone in any fiction. It's one big torture/horribleness party.

Well we always knew Acheron was going to have a tortured background, I like my guys tortured though. I think I'm going to have to cave and order the damn thing off amazon! According to my bookstore it wont be here until December 1!

Wow, december.

It's incredibly tortured. It sort of made me ill. But I loved the book!

Wait, this is ...romance, not horror/thriller? o_0

Sort of. It's in two parts, and the second part (about 1/3 of the book) is rather like a traditional romance (if a dark one). The first part, which is about 2/3 deals with background of main character (since this is a series, it was sort of hinted at in earlier books) and it's not a romance at all. It's pretty horrific actually and one of the few fictional books I might be too squeamish for.
