Buffy Rewatch: Bad Eggs
Aug. 3rd, 2008 12:18 am
I think I might be in the minority, but I really like S2's 'Bad Eggs.' The Redneck Vamp brothers amuse me to no end (and I am very very glad Lyle escapes, I can't help it). The egg thing is suitably creepy and fun, the zingers are great (especially Cordy and Xander back-and-forth in sex ed) and I love seeing Buffy and Angel so happy together and having a lot of fun making out like totally hormonally driven dorks instead of hunting. And it's one of my favorite shippy moments, when he tells her he can't have children (which would be part of her normal life of course) and she doesn't care and she tells him 'When I look into the future, all I see is you. All I want is you.' If only it were that simple. And the camera pans over, rather chillingly in retrospect, to the headstone with 'in loving memory of.'
I just love that sweetness especially since I know what happens next ep. I think the fact that Surprise is next is actually part of the reason I like BE so. It's the last breathing space before the rest of the season tears my heart out and dances a tap dance on the remains. I love the second half of S2 (IMO the best Buffy arc ever), but I am dreading it, too.
Xander/Cordy doing their patented 'insult each other between makeout sessions' thing. They make me LOL so much:

Buffy, terrified of being a single mother to an egg. Good! According to SMeyer of Twilight infamy, liking eggs is a first sign of pregnancy, anyway :P

Angel and Buffy have their own definition of 'patrolling to look for evildoers.' All of a sudden, I want to go to Slayer school.

Trying to be good:

And failing:

When your egg child becomes a problem child:

I can't help it, I like Lyle Gorch:

Poor Buffy, so full of ennui:

But it's OK, Angel's tongue gives her energy:

I love this scene so much! The whole mention that he can't have vamp kids (duh) and he totally feels guilty/unworthy again. And then he asks her if she ever thinks of the future and she tells him all she sees and wants is him (which is something he so needs to hear, he isn't big on self-esteem) and he breathes back 'I know the feeling' and they are making out again. *melt die revive melt again* And then the camera pans over a gravestone. Yeah, twist the knife on this rewatch, why don't ya, Joss?

Love all three of them:

The sexiness that is

I love this shot of super-tough Buffy:

Poor Joyce. She is so out of her depth with her daughter:

That's one way to obey your Mom's instruction to stay in your room. How come that never happened to me in school? Maybe I should have been more rebellious.

Got the caps at the usual place.

Date: 2008-08-03 04:45 am (UTC)I agree, the second half is dramatically stronger (I really do think it was the best BtVS ever was) but I am weak-hearted and require a little happiness and so S2's second half is a bit hard to watch (in the same way some of the later Farscape, e.g. is. It's brilliant and soul-killing at the same time). First half is much happier (obviously).
I can never decide whether I like S2 or S3 more, but usually I tend toward S2.

Date: 2008-08-03 08:52 pm (UTC)As for the second part of S2, oh yes, that was serious genius. This is what got me really really hooked on BtVS at that time and ironically enough, those episodes also got me to ship B/A...
These picspams/reviews really bring back great memories! I really enjoy reading them. :D

Date: 2008-08-03 08:59 pm (UTC)Yeah, at first I thought BE was forgettable but now I see it as the last sweet breathing space before the angstfest. Second part of S2 is the best BtVS ever was, IMO. In a way, that is, emotionally, most at stake Buffy ever had. Someone she loved so much became the nemesis (and such a personally vicious one), and she viewed it as partially her fault.
And the whole bit at the end ith Becoming 2, when he came back to normal and then she had to send him to hell? That was sheer genius, but I remember crying for half an hour afterwards.

I think part of why everything was so well-done in the second part of S2 was how Angelus was, deliciously evil and so very different from the real Angel. I think I kept searching for Angel in Angelus in vain like Buffy was and that was so heartbreaking. I think B/A made me start loving angsty romance.
That was sheer genius, but I remember crying for half an hour afterwards.
*nods* Me too. Everything about this finale is sheer genius. ('Becoming part 1' is also SO SO good.) I remember being shell-shocked afterwards, being all like 'Oh. My. God.'. You couldn't predict how it'd turn out, you just couldn't. I love everything about it. The whole ending battle, the way Spike, the evil guy, teamed up with Buffy, (hilarious moments...) Buffy being on the run, Joyce finding out everything, Willow and Oz, Xander lying about the curse, Spike leaving with Drusilla and freakin' shrugging about Buffy dying (that's the Spike I loved :P) and of course, Angel becoming Angel again at the worst possible time.
Heh, at school we were speculating whether Angel would be returning or not (no spoilers for me at the time... )and how Buffy would come back. *sigh* Old times... This remains my favorite BtVS finale.

Date: 2008-08-03 11:30 pm (UTC)Yup, different in every way (thus proving Giles' point that a person might look the same but it's a demon just wearing their face). Though he still had the Buffy fixation real bad. This time because it probably made him writhe to remember loving somebody (and a Slayer, no less) so much.
'Becoming part 1' is also SO SO good.)
Oh yes. The two-parter might be my favorite BtVS ep, actually. That finale was so incredible.

Date: 2008-08-03 11:31 pm (UTC)But Angel is not a real vampire (and neither is Spike). He doesn't sparkle!
The Gorches were LOLtastic. I can't help but like them and their hick silliness.
And the kissage? SQUEE. That's almost the last guilt-free kissage we get.

Buffy and Angel pretty much broke my squee during this episode and then Joss decided it was time to stomp on our hearts. I can't wait for your Surprise/Innocence recap!

Date: 2008-08-04 12:02 am (UTC)Isn't the word angstfest enough?
Or the fact that Innocence totally has like the best sex scene ever! It's so pretty!

Date: 2008-08-04 12:04 am (UTC)Innocence is such a heartbreaking ep, even more so than Surprise, but yes, the sex scene is so pretty and flashbacky. I am sure it was all very lovely and hot and bonemelting. Until Buffy woke up alone and Angelus on the loose.

Date: 2008-08-04 12:09 am (UTC)God I was pretty much sobbing and gasping through all of Innocence. Actually pretty much every episode starting from Surprise was so angsty and sad esp. Becoming. Best. Finale. Ever!

Date: 2008-08-04 04:03 am (UTC)I absolutely loved Passion and I Only Have Eyes For You; both so beautifully shot and acted. Talk about ripping your heart out and making you love every minute of it :-).
Xiaobelsa and I have agreed to embark on a mighty (although possibly selective) rewatch of Buffy once my degree is finished. We might tackle Angel as well, which I also loved (though for different reasons).

Yes, such wonderful eps even if they made me bawl.
