dangermousie: (Buffy: BA swords by cinzia81)

I have just developed an interest in watching Angel:

Yes, I clearly need an angsty doomed love story in my shows to be interested, I am so predicatable.

Since I know people get very keen on their ships and might not want to see MVs for ships they don't ship, the vid above is Fred/Wes. It's also very very spoilery.

I loved Wesley even when he was the geeky inffectual adorable dork on Buffy, and I know on Angel they gave him AAAANGST, darkness, and having his throat slit (S3?) I approve.

I am oh-so-very-predictable.

And yes, I am as spoiled for Angel as it's possible to be. That's how I like it :)

I actually like Wes better when was a "geeky inffectual adorable dork" and when he gains fighting skills and effectiveness, but is still a major dork. The Sooper Dooper Dark and Angsty Wes I still like, but not as much.

I admit, though, that I could never get into Fred/Gunn or Fred/Wes. Normally I could (and would) cheerfully get into either or both, but the way they handled it (hooking up Fred and Gunn out of the blue after deliberately building up Fred/Wes and then my distaste for how they ended Fred/Gunn-though I could understand where both characters were coming from, I dislike the messages involved) kept me from ever caring about the triangle.

I suspect, though, that you'll like both Fred and Illyria.

And yup, Wes gets his throat slit. And then Angel tries to choke (or was it smoother?) him in the hospital. (I give them a lot of credit for being able to write that part without really saying either of them was wrong.)

I am usually a lot more easygoing about liking ships than you are (in fact, some people might say I have no standards :P), so unless they kill babies, I am going to be fine with whatever goes down :)

My biggest hurdle for AtS is the irrational shipper one: I don't want to see Angel with anyone but Buffy. I can't help it, I get all irrationally 'eeeek'.

My Buffyverse intro was late s2/early s3 AtS, when it was kinda "Angel and Cordy would totally be sleeping with each other but he's still hung up on someone else and she doesn't want to have to try to kill him after if the sex is actually any good." It wasn't until they actually went "hey, let's say they're in love!" that it got annoying, which it is even without the Buffy s1-3 background.

Heee. From what I heard, AtS is very uneven: some awesome eps and some awful ones.

Yeah. In some ways, I kinda prefer it to Buffy, despite Buffy being a better show. Largely because the concept(tongue-in-cheek noirish show with a supernatural detective agency) is more my thing, but also because my favorite Buffyverse characters are Cordy, Gunn, Wes and Faith.

Most of it is solid entertainment or really good, but then some parts are bad. Like the Connor/Cordy arc in S4. I'm still scarred from that.

Buffyverse with the angst and the teen thing is more my thing, so ueah...

I cn only tolerate Cordy and Faith in small doses. The little I saw of Gunn made him too normal for me to latch onto :)

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Faith is a character I love in part because we only really get her in small doses, after her S3 arc(which wa also important for other reasons.) One of the rare cases where TPTB realize that a character is best if they only show up when needed, instead of all the time because of popularity.

"Normal" is one of the last words I'd really use to describe Gunn, unless it's in the context of the "Badass Normal" TV trope. The boy was seriously screwed up before we even met him.

the context of the "Badass Normal" TV trope

heee, that's what I meant :)

I don't think anyone in Whedonverse is normal in an everyday sense of the word.

Just think of him as Xander, but with an angsty backstory, able to contribute, and without being overly possessive of the women in his life

Date: 2008-08-03 03:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Heeee. That makes me totally uninterested though :) I never was invested in Xander not because of his possessiveness or what not but because of his normalcy. I did love Xander's snark, best on show imo.

I liked Xander the first few seasons(though never as much as the rest of the main characters), but his attitudes regarding Buffy (and the men in her life) and Anya made me get more and more annoyed with him until I actively disliked him after dumping Anya at the altar, and then how he treated both of them after the Spike bit.

I didn't like Wes in BtVS but I liked him in Angel. I didn't care too much for the dark angsty Wes though. And I kinda shipped Fred/Gunn (Gunn's the best, btw). But the way they broke up was just awful and I hated Wes/Fred.

Oh, the throat slitting. I loved S3 because of the whole baby arc (that's how you do vampire/human baby Smeyer). And I'm probably the only person in the entire fandom who doesn't hate Connor. I adored his evilness!

haha I don't hate Connor either, though I admit I hated how he was manipulated by evil!Cordy.. that was ugly. But I could never hate on any of them characters for real. I even liked Riley.

Yay not alone! Oh man the evil!Cordy thing was just hard to watch for me. I didn't like that they did that to fun sunny Cordy.

I even liked Riley.
lol I can't say the same. My hardcore Buffy/Angel fangirlyness kept me from liking him, I think :P

That whole plot line was weird and maybe time has made things look brighter but I remember I was rather disappointed. :/ Right now I just think it was part of the whole thing, so after all, it was fine.

ahaha I've always been a Buffy/Spike fangirl [except for the first few seasons of Buffy, cause then I kinda liked the idea of B/A... and always thought I will remember You was heartbreaking and evil. :(] Angel/Cordy seemed more appropriate at the end.. I think they built up that pairing quite wisely, it's another question that they fucked it up lmao.

Ya the evil!Cordy plotline was too weird and creepy and that's why I'm not a huge fan of S4. (just got into the verse last summer...)

Heh I am one of those crazies who's all Buffy/Angel ONLY! (But I love evil soulless Spike and AtS S5 Spike.)
OMG I Will Remember You was just heartwrenching and evil! Joss Whedon, that evil brilliant man :P

Oh a Barney icon! XD Did you see Dr. Horrible? God I love Joss.

AtS S5 Spike was so random. XDD eeek and now I'm reminded of Andrew. <3333 Tom Lenk was brilliant. XD

Dr. Horrible was too awesome and broke my heart!

S5 Spike made me giggle. :D
I really liked Andrew up until S7 when I just found him annoying and I dunno, unnecessary, I guess. I'm not liking him in S8 a great deal either.

I always had a thing for Once more with Feeling, so I knew Dr.Horrible would worth watching but it seriously was just beyond awesome. XD

idk I liked Andrew for being a complete idiot but I can see how some can see that annoying, lmao. XD And I never read S8.. maybe it'd be high time to.

I loved Once More With Feeling too. And Dr. Horrible really was beyond awesome. I hope we get dvds!

I liked Andrew in the beginning but then idk he just started getting on my nerves. If start reading S8 and hate the first arc, I still recommend you read the Faith arc before abandoning season 8. It's just so good!

asdfghjk DVDs with extra material would be lovely, indeed. Or more episodes. XD

Alright, I'll make sure to read the whole thing or at least Faith's line. I can't imagine it to suck, though, lol. Well, it was nice talking to you. I gotta go now and pack cause I'm leaving for vacation, yay. Take care. ^__^

I liiiiiike angst so that's usually my default setting in fiction.

I saw a whole bunch of Connor eps and wanted to stab him, sorry :)

From: [identity profile] sodahands.livejournal.com
LOL I love the angst too but I just didn't like it when angst took over BOTH Wes and Cordy. But I will admit that Wes got hotter with the angst :P

S4 Connor could be pretty annoying and whiny and I can understand why people would hate him but S3 Connor was JUST SO EVIL! It's really disturbing how much I loved his evilness...

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
I take the "Connor himself is OK, but his storyline as a grown up is a giant pile of donkey turd" stance.

Decent character, lousy execution in S4. *has much hate for large chunks of S4, made bearable only for Gina Torres, Gwen, and messed up "so ending badly" Wes/Lilah*

I haven't seen all of Connor's storyline (and probably don't want to, C/C stuff made me want to poke my eyes out) but the thing that bugged me was 'whiny'. I can't stand that in a character. Maybe he and Dawn could have formed a cross-over couple of annoyingness?

Date: 2008-08-03 12:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
I can understand why Connor and Dawn are like that, really. Dawn annoys me less because I really do think she's what Buffy would be like under the same circumstances (normal-despite how she exists in the first place-girl with a Sooper Speshul sister) and Connor's upbringing at leasts makes me understand why he has the attitude, but he needed to get over it at some point, and never did until his appearance in S5.

The C/C stuff I try to pretend never happened. And you know, the actual canon does give a way to justify that none of the horrible part of her SL was really Cordy, as she was technically being ruled by the demon mid S3 on.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
But even if it didn't happen, I still had to watch it :P My eyeballs!

I might understand why a character is whiny but it doesn't make me like them more. Whiny and incompetent are the only two character traits which will make me go off a character entirely and never want to give them any benefit of the doubt or liking or anything, ever. (In RL, actually, as well).

I absolutely loved the direction Wesley's character took in Angel. There's nothing sexier than angst and depression. I especially loved the whole angst about Wes/someone (don't want to spoil you even more, though I guess you're already are). Wes/Fred was not that interesting until suddenly it became angsty and then there was Illyria. Those scenes were awesome. ahh, I miss both Buffy/Angel-verses.

I LOVED Wes on "Angel" and his doomed romances. OH, and also, the whole Lilah thing with Wes is fantastic - disturbing and hot and he tries to keep it at "mortal enemy" sex but he can't and ... yeah. I adored his entire story-arc.

It does seem (at least from the spoilers I read) that the Wes storylines, Lilah and parent issues and all, might actually appeal to me the most. Will see.

Actually, it shows up in S3, then they randomly pair her off with Gunn to surprise us since they were building up Fred/Wes. Then Wes angsts over it and pines until S5...

I was always mad that Wes and Fred weren't together. But that's Joss Whedon for you. If you like that sort of thing you'll get loads of it in Angel. Angst, that is. :)
