I have a new love: Skip Beat, a manga about revenge through showbiz :D

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer and [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore. I read first volume and it's awesome.

Kyoko is the girl who's sacrificed everything in order for her selfish boyfriend Sho to make it in show biz, but as he gets famous, she finds out he was only using her.

So Kyoko? Does not weep, does not wail, but decides to get revenge by becoming more famous than him. She proceeds on her path being strong and hilarious and very far from typical fagile shoujo heroine. The girl's a bulldozer, and if I were Sho, I'd run far away. Her paths also cross with Ren, the seemingly extremely self-contained star who is the current number 1 'idol.' Who just might out-stubborn and out-manipulate Kyoko. Maybe. If they don't kill each other first.

It's funny, it's cute, and it's awesome.

It's also made to be a drama. Though I can't think of any Japanese actors/actresses I'd like to be in it, I can think of tons of Korean ones. Kyoko can pe played by Han Ji Hye (the lead in Sweet 18, who was adorable and terrifyingly driven/delinquent at the same time). As to Ren and Sho, kdramas aren't lacking in hot tall young men. :) I am biased in favor of Hyun Bin and Kim Jung Hoon, respectively, for my own reasons :)

And because I don't like posting without eye candy, here is the manga pic of Ren:

i have read this manga and its interesting how hard she works to get back at Sho, since he was such a jerk to her... takes her away with him so that she can serve him and then when his all getting famous he drops her... although he is still second to Ren...

i like her perseverance and the fact that she didn't break down she's getting even,

That's the part I like the most, too.

I like rooting for Kyoko as she never pities herself when she fails, she just regroups and moves to the next thing. This is the very thing Ren ends up liking her for. Sho has no idea what sort of lion he awakened when he ditched her.

And I love Ren, the only male character in the series capable of standing up to Kyoko's crazy personality swings and actually able to keep her in line. He's just a nice guy and you realize more and more that he keeps pushing her away because she reminds him of his past which he's tried very hard to seperate himself from. He roots for her in his own way and manipulates her to do what is best for herself, but he keeps her at arms length because he won't let people get close to him.

Yeah, I like Kyoko. She is very prickly but with good reason and she never gives up. In some ways, the thing reminds me of Sunoko and Kyohei in Wallflower (esp. with change being occasioned by an unworthy guy rejecting her much earlier).

... yet more proof that Mary Sue is meant for the manga format

The only actress I can see pulling off Kyoko and her rages is Nakama Yukie, who, sadly, is too old for the role.

And Ren is...*hem*

I don't really like Nakama Yukie (yeah, yeah, I know. *hides*) but agree, she could have pulled it off...

No one else does manic or insane as well as she does. Also, you have to get an actor with lots of charisma for ren, and yukie can hold her own against anyone. but, again, too old. Hmm...Inoue Mao is also a possibility, but I'm not sure...

Heee, it even got you bringing out the capslock. It reminds me a bit of Wallflower (though I like Wallflower more).

It's cute and zany for a while, and then... I dunno, I forget where it happens, but it dives straight into the Black Pit Of Awesome Angst. Like, in the most tacked-on and "Wtf? Why did we not hear of this earlier?" ways, but I DO NOT CARE, because the result is so cracktastically awesome.

Seriously. Later volumes. FTW.

Yay. Pit of angst. I don't care how we get there as long as we do.
