Harry Potter spoilers
Jul. 16th, 2005 05:03 pmFinished it. Now, I am sure I should talk about plot and clues and deaths. But my first post is going to be about the all-important issue of... shipping. I had three hours of sleep so that's all my brain is good for. I am so happy I could dance, as every single one of my ships worked out.
Oh, the ships in the book made me happy, especially as I was unspoiled.
Bill/Fleur: so cool. I too, thought, JKR was setting Fleur up for a fall, what with the disparaging comments the Weasleys were making, and was rather dreading it as I've always liked her. But that bit at the end at Bill's bedside, is actually my favorite part in the book, even though it has no Harry in it. Proves, of course, that it doesn't matter if Mrs. Weasley or anyone outside the relationship thinks it's weird, as long the parties themselves are happy. It obviously works for both Bill and Fleur and it's not just the looks. "I am beautiful enough for the both of us, I theenk." My. Favorite. Quote. Guh...so perfect. Go Fleur!
Ron/Hermione: that felt so real. I could see myself (if younger) being involved in precisely that way. Ron snogging Lavander made me laugh, and Hermione's determinted attempt to make him jealous (quite successful) was wonderful.
'And it doesn't hurt that you've grown about a foot over the summer, either,' Hermione finished, ignoring Ron.
'I'm tall,' said Ron, inconsequentially. ROFL. I love them!
Harry/Ginny: be still my shipper's heart! Never in a million years did I think all that would happen. I was glad Harry got some happiness: the boy deserves it. I loved Ginny, fun and strong and she never stopped liking Harry. There was no akward panic like he had with Cho (perhaps because they've been friends). Harry wouldn't be happy in a R/H relationship, the constant bickering would get to him. But with Ginny he sounded like he just relaxed. But yes, what impressed me the most was the maturity and comfort of the relationship. The bit at the end where he lets her go for her sake, is such a beautiful scene. And I love that he just knows she will understand and not make a scene. And she does. These two are made for each other. Not even in my wildest hopes...*sniffles* And he snogged her in a room full of people. And the love potion smells like her. And he is so going to come back to her if he survives. And his whole comment that the past weeks with her have been so wonderful they were "like weeks out of someone else's life." Wow. That might be one of my favorite HP quotes ever. Because it says volumes about the kind of life he has and expects.
Remus/Tonks: a bit out of nowhere compared to past books, but hints were here all over the book. I was never a R/S shipper, so I am glad it looks like Remus will get to have some love and happiness. Poor man deserves it. And he was being sweet and self-denying. Awwww.
Draco/Moaning Myrtle: ROFL. Though I feel sorry for poor Draco. Never thought it.
Snape? Snape? Snape???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still think there is something more here than meets the eye, considering how at one point Harry sees that Snape is in as much pain as the dog trapped in a burning building and that Snape roars at him not to call him a coward. But, Snape??????????????? *dies*

Date: 2005-07-17 12:38 am (UTC)I was so sad at the end of the story even though I knew Dumbledore was going to die, it really reinforced the urgency Harry now feels in defeating Voldemort.
As for Snape...there is definitely something more going on. Just when I thought Jo couldn't use Snape as a red herring anymore....she does it again! Man, she better have a good explanation in book 7!!
Darn it, I realized I have finished the new HP book but haven't seen the premiere of the new BSG episode yet!

Date: 2005-07-17 12:54 am (UTC)But yes, I am so confused about Snape. It would just not be cool if he is an evil twit. I don't think he is, as otherwise she would have never revealed it as early as Ch 2, but would have sprung it at the end, the way she did all the other twists.
And never in a million years did I think I'd feel sorry for Draco. But I do. He is mean and petty and nasty. But he is no murderer and now he is stuck with Voldemort.
Go watch BSG. It was excellent. I'll have more coherent thoughts tomorrow though, because for now? am brain dead.

Date: 2005-07-17 01:16 am (UTC)Re: Draco. Before HBP I never believed in redeemed!Draco. But all of a sudden I find the character very interesting, not a 2D boring bully with no real redeeming value. The scene with Myrtle really got me (I think the fact that he turns to her shows his real isolation: he really can't talk to anyone else), and I loved his hestitation at the end with DD. I guess Draco fangirls were right after all.

Date: 2005-07-17 06:44 pm (UTC)My ships! They came true! Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny, I mean. If Harry lives, then he and Ginny will have like a dozen kids with black and red hair and green eyes. If Harry doesn't live, then Ron and Hermione are going to name one of their kids after him.
Yes, that's right. Being in love definitely translates into having kids to me. I think with my family life it's only to be expected. I think that's the real reason why the idea of using birth control startles me so much.
I suspect that Hermione, while describing the smell of the Amortentia, very nearly mentioned it smelling something like Ron, which is why she caught herself and looked embarassed. I love how that was used to introduce the idea that Harry was possibly falling for Ginny before he himself even realized it. Boys are so thick-headed, it's cute!
I posted a lot more detailed analyses in my most recent livejournal entry. We're talking very detailed, as in, I put a lot more thought into that entry than I do my homework (well, maybe not the Odyssey, but whatever). From the looks of it, I kept my head and my wits a tad better than you did, Miss Mousie.
(Do you mind that I call you Miss Mousie? Some people are put off when I call them things like 'sir' and 'madam' so I just thought I'd check.)
Hehe. Snogging.

Date: 2005-07-17 09:23 pm (UTC)I kinda like Miss Mousie.
And I agree re Harry/Ginny having a dozen kids. Actually, now that he fell for Ginny, I think his chances of survival and living HEA have imporved greatly as he has something to look forward to.
And yay. Every single one of my ships worked out. *happy sigh*

Date: 2005-07-17 09:27 pm (UTC)I was actually quite shocked that Harry/Ginny came to fruition (oh man, fruition is totally the word of the day today). Even more so than Ron/Hermione, they are my OTP, as I've been rooting for them since the second book. I was so surprised that I literally threw the book across the bed when I read the sentence "Harry kissed Ginny." I was bugging out SO bad.
Then I checked it to make sure I read it right, then got up to do my "I was right all along!" dance.
I'm willing to bet Ginny has a much bigger role in the next book. She's got some experience with Voldemort's Horcruxes, after all.

Date: 2005-07-17 09:27 pm (UTC)Okay, I just finished it as well. My ships have all completely sunk.
My problem with the canon ships was that they were all completely predictable. I would have bet the entire contents of my house, minus my computer, that it was going to be R/Hr and H/G. I kind of wanted JK Rowling to surprise us. Give us a little Harry/Draco or something.
Oh, and Snape? See first line of this comment.
