Is kdrama Alone in Love any good? YA just released it on DVD.
Oh, and Red River. It kills me that it’s 28 volumes but only 17 are currently out in English. I just finished volume 14 and must have more. I love it with a burning love. There is one scene in 12 (?) that might bug you, meganbmoore, but seeing that Kail got shot through the chest as an indirect result of trying to atone (and no, it’s not Haou Airen stuff, things stop before they get anywhere near that level :D), I don’t mind.
I love Yuri. She is awesomely kick butt and take charge. Fight in battle? Hell yeah. Face head on the reality that her significant other will have to marry not her but someone politically connected? She can deal, telling him she knows he must take a wife but she gets to be his only concubine. (Of course, Kail plans to marry her no matter what). I mean, how many mangas have the heroine dealing with the problem of the hero’s out-of-control harem (he doesn’t want those women and he is certainly not touching them, but he can’t send them back right away as it’s insulting to the ahem…donors. So they have to stay put for a bit). LOL.
Awesome. I still am amused at the fact that he is a real historical person with a wiki entry (as Mursili II). And he is really really successful Hittite king. And he did have a conflict with his stepmother. And at least some of the wars the mangaka describes are historical. Interesting…
Also, Kail and Yuri finally did it (in vol 14). EEEEE. Took them two flipping years and 14 volumes. I was going to expire myself. I severely crack up at the whole comment by Yuri that when she is in Kail’s arms, she is so happy she feels numb. My reaction was ‘Really? The two of you haven’t left the bed for four straight days. I think you are numb for other reasons :P”

I am going to be in withdrawal shortly as volumes run out so I will read Basara for a historical type tough fighter heroine fix.
In other news, oh Veronica Mars. It’s seriously the act of mercy to just cancel you now.
And no, it’s not the disappointed shipper in me, trust me. To make a Buffy comparison, I was a rabid Buffy/Angel shipper (much much more invested than in Veronica and Logan) but I continued to love Buffy all the way through early S6, years after Angel left for his own show. Despite having no interest in Riley whatsoever and in Spike as a partner for Buffy, I found the two+ years after the end of S3 very enjoyable even if I wanted Buffy and Angel to be foreveah!evah!otp11 through to the bitter end. Heck, ‘Once More with Feeling’ will make into my Top 5 Buffy eps and it ends on a cinematic, awesome Buffy/Spike kiss. So yeah. VM lack has nothing to do with shipping but everything with the fact that the writers forgot how to write.

Date: 2007-05-03 02:57 am (UTC)I think vol 14 is when they get to it in Basara, too. Maybe it was a thing in the mid 90s for manga? You're writing a shojo action romance in a period setting(though, Basara is set in the future, but society has regressed...or rather, readvanced...to the feaudal era) so the OTP MUST have sex before vol 15 ends.
Incidentally, not counting the volume that just came out(which I don't have yet *gnashes teeth*) there's only 2 more volumes of the main story left...the last 2 volumes are short stories about the characters after the series ends(so at least I know it's not a "and then they all died" thing) or when we didn't see them during the main action. As I understand it, it was still doing so well that the publisher wanted to milk it for all it was worth(and I'm sure Yumi Tamura didn't object to what was probably easier work while she decided what to do next) Yeah...ramble because I want my book.
I love once more with feeling...honestly, the way it was going, I COULD have shipped Buffy/Spike like crazy, but then they went and fubar-ed it...I don't even mean the rape attempt, I mean the sex obsession...I mean...ok, maybe they felt bad about the whole "he turns into a monster if they have sex" thing with Angel and wanted to make it up to her, but did they HAVE to be so obsessed with sex in her other relationships. *mumbles and grumbles*
I did look at Red River at Waldenbooks today...they had 5 copies of vol 10, 2 of 13 and I think 4 of 17...was weird.
As far as what you mentioned...I'm actually lenient on such things as long as it's a "context of the times" thing, and, like you said, it doesn't go all the way. We're talking about a time period where it wasn't unusual for a woman to be carried off in an attack on her village and, by our standards, be raped and then eventually marry/spend her life with the man and have his children and be happy with him. Now, I'm not saying I want that to be the main story, I'm just ok with the context. As long as the act itself is consentual, and any going to far(without all the way) is regretted, I can generally get past it.
