OK, now I am on a Beowulf kick, has anyone seen Beowulf and Grendel that came out a couple of years with Gerard Butler (yum) as Beowulf?

I found a MV for it and it looks awesome. I mean, even if the movie sucks (no idea), it looks so pretty.

Anyone?

Pretty production values for that Beowulf & Grendel but they went all post-modernist and so Grendel is just misunderstood and Beowulf's part of the privileged oppressing class and all that. *sigh*

I far prefer The Thirteenth Warrior as a very lose retelling of the story to any I've seen that claims to be doing Beowulf.

The only reason to watch is to stare at Gerard Butler. Sadly, even that only got me through about 30 minutes. Even knowing the story, it was amazingly hard to follow, and while it LOOKED amazing...that was about it.

Gerard Butler is the reason to watch that version, so it all depends on how attractive you find him when he's all bearded and shaggy with a sword.

It worked for me on a purely visual level, although otherwise it was pretty much a mess, and all the actors are using their own accents, with Sarah Polley's Canadian accent standing out like a sore thumb (however, Gerard Butler's Scottish accent worked for me just fine — sigh!).

The scenery was gorgeous, the rest of it.... Well, it's more Grendel's Mother than Beowulf but fails to make Grendel sympathetic because, you know, I just don't think rape is the sort of thing that makes for a sympathetic character.

heh...it'll have to be...some of the accents are so heavy you cant understand them and that and the sloppy writing made it almost incomprehensible(though not even pretty gerry kept me for that long)

Well, they have the person raped not mind even though she was clearly not at all willing and is mad at everyone else taking advantage of her. Somehow that makes it worse. One of the creepiest scenes I've seen in a while.
