Of course, it also made me want to have a rewatch. It is so awesome.
And she made me show her the getting-together-kissing scenes :)

Date: 2007-05-06 07:49 pm (UTC)It makes me really think, though, what with everyone discovering the dramas I watched as my firsts - mainly Goong and ISWAK - and how they're really good dramas to see early on. Both had their slow, frustrating moments but whereas I now might get impatient with such and decide, "This drama isn't worth my time!", with them I was just hooked and wanted more, despite dragginess. Sometimes I wish I could get some of that mindset back, that newbieness, even though I still am a newbie in my own eyes (compared to people who've seen hundreds of dramas).
It's ridiculous to get nostalgic over something I watched less than a year back but I get a bit nostalgic when I think about Goong. Or maybe not nostalgic but wistful. Why isn't there a proper Goong 2? :(

Date: 2007-05-07 05:17 am (UTC)Btw, you mentioned wanting a list of dramas I found problematic because you might like them. There aren't that many because there are so many dramas if it doesn't grab me right away I won't watch and also I go by recs of people with similar tastes.
But there these three, all Japanese and all acclaimed, just not really my thing at all:
Long Vacation, Kimi Wa Petto and Nobuta Wo Produce. Everyone loves them except me :)

Date: 2007-05-07 05:21 am (UTC)Yeah, the newbieness wore off for me too, but my problem is there are too many things and I end up like dog with two bones keep running between them and can;t commit :)

Date: 2007-05-07 06:33 am (UTC)I think I'm kinda looking for the ones that made you scream in rage at the characters or where the ending really frustrated you, rather than that ones that just fell flat for you :D
And which ones are your everqueens that you love as much as Goong?
Also:
Are all of them as good as Goong as far as sets, clothes and co go? Or are them some that are a bit more... low tech?
I'm also kinda looking for some that have the big fat drama, revenge, family loyalty, old lover, amnesia, whatever there can be.... Something that is just comedy or just sleeping around is kinda boring to me.
Which ones are the one with the guy whose brother is in coma and he tries to seduce the girl out o revenge but falls for her? And which one was the one that was too incestuous for you because both guys were sorta step-brothers to her? And the one where the guy is on the swim team? That one sounded interesting as well.
Last but not least, which ones are the most popular ones, meaning the ones that would probably easiest to get? (yeah, I'm lazy...)

Date: 2007-05-07 01:40 pm (UTC)I usually know how things end before I get them :P E.g. I am not watching 40 hours of Yoshitsune only to be blindsided by the fact that the main character and his family are made to commit seppuku at the end. In fact, I am watching 40 hours of Yoshitsune sort of enjoying the fact of impending hottie angst while drooling over the swordfighting and the funny hats. :D
The only drama ending which made me go WTF is Love Contract (which is also the 'swim team' one). Mind you, I still like the drama a lot. The secondary characters bore me but I adore the OTP. I don't dislike the ending, I just don't get it. And yeah, I would prefer a different ending quite a lot.
I got rather annoyed with both main characters of Devil Beside You by the end but still thought they were cute though I ended up being invested in the secondary OTP way more. But it's a comedic drama.
That's about it.
The coma one is A Love to Kill (IJUKSA). It's one of my favorites. It's also beautifully filmed.
I am not sure which the incestuous one is because I am actually kinda digging incest/quasi-incest in Asian dramas (I know). I remember watching kmovie 'Temptation of Wolves' and rooting for the half-siblings as the OTP :D
Unless you are thinking of Damo, a period drama where her options are her real live long lost brother who is now a hot rebel and a police commander who she grew up with and views as a brother (or actually loves, it's left to interpretation). But I do like that drama a lot.
You want angst? Oh baby. I got recs for you.
1. Something Happened in Bali (korean): aaaaangst and melodrama. Poor tour guide (she), rich messed up millionaire sees her and falls for guide though he is engaged to a icy rich girl who has a poor but ambitious boyfriend. This boyfriend falls for the tour guide too. Quadrangles make my head spin here and there is no concept of 'one true love only' etc etc. It was a huge hit so easy to find. It's also not something that a huge thing for me as it hurts my eyes to roll them so hard being annoyed at the character :D so maybe good idea for you :)
2. God Give Me More Time (Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake) (jdrama): Mmmmmmm....there are not that many awesome angsty jdramas but when they do it they go all out. This is pure crack. This 17 year old igh school sleeps with someone for $$$ to get money for a concert of this famous mid-twenties musician. She gets AIDS. But the hot, leather-pantsed mucisian also falls in love with her. Plenty of angst, running in leather pants follows. Seriously awesome :) It's in my all time fave jdramas.
3. Tree of Heaven (Heaven's Tree) (kdrama): arguably my favorite kdrama. And OMG the melodrama. They are stepsiblings who fall in love with each other but separate. Years later they reunite and now he is a bigwig gangster...There are stabbings, almost kisssings and mutual showers...
4. Mars (twdrama): this one's production values aren't as high (generally Korean dramas have the best production values and jdramas and twdramas not necessarily like this). But it's my favorite drama ever, the one which got me (and a bunch of others) hooked. Plus, plenty of melodrama: They are in college and she is incredibly introverted to the point of disfunction and he is a violent troublemaker who has bizarre fainting spells and memory blanks.
It has amnesia, evil families, motorcycle races, pyscho exes, and just psychos. It's awesome.
5. Silence (twdrama): I wanted to tie the hero and heroine together and make them have sex by the end dammit but it's aaaaaaaaaaangsty. Male lead has terminal cancer, meets his childhood one and only love who is mute blah blah.

Date: 2007-05-07 02:16 pm (UTC)So you never got to the point where you almost rooted for the "Other" option? Or thought one part of the OTP was too cruel to the other part of the OTP at one point?

Heh, as somebody who did grow up with Soap Operas and Romance Novels all that stuff is totally up my alley :D I think I knew I wanted to give Goong a chance when I found out that it has forced/arranged marriage (I have always had a soft spot for "Couple is forced to get married and only then fall in love" stories in fanfiction) and of course screwed up aristocrats.
Hmmm, I shall go and search and research these!
A Love to Kill and Tree of Heaven sound the most appealing to me at this point. I don't think that I'm much good with medical storylines. Too depressing :(

Date: 2007-05-09 12:51 am (UTC)I am as canon Nazi as it gets :)
The closest I came to rooting for the other option was in kdrama My Girl, one of my all time faves. The other guy was just incredibly awesome. Which is funny as the otp of that drama is one of my biggest otps. In fact, at one point I was all for an OT3 which is an almost unheard of thing for me. (The funny thing is when other guy did try to interfere I got all annoyed so yeah, canon girl at heart). It's a 'light' drama though.
Re: cruelty. Full House (kdrama) I thought the character should have angst for being a bit immature and he did have tons later. I don't know if that qualifies.
EEEEE! Candidate.
Meteor Garden. I spent the last ten + eps yelling at the screen 'love him back, you do, admit it' (all the while loving the heroine actually).
In fact, I should recommend Meteor Garden to you (just not the sequel). It's like the ur-drama, the one that really started the drama craze all over and actualy launched its four male stars to huge stardom (they started a band after the drama, called F4, which is psycho popular).
The one problem with it is that it had a tiny budget (as it was before the drama craze). Nowhere near Goong opulence. Oh, and since their hiring criteris for the guys was 'good-looking and over 6 feet' they learn acting as they go. They are not horrible or anything and get better but it might be a snag. I just ove the characters and the story (and Jerry Yan's cheekbones) so much I don't care.
And ithas things you like: dastardly exes, evil schemes, rich-poor divide, everything and the kitchen sink.
The plot is as follows:
Shan-Cai (who is a kick-ass heroine, played by Barbie Hsu) goes to a very snooty rich college. She is actually the only 'poor' student there. The college is ruled by F4, a quartet of off-spring of the richest families. Piss them off, and you are gone. If they stick a red tag in your locker, it means they want you ou. If you don't quit, other students will gang up on you, and even the teachers will help.
SC used to be quite a firebrand in school but in college she just wants to get through quietly however this system annoys her.
But that is not to be because in defending a friend, she stands up to Daoming Si (Jerry Yan, who is too yummy to be believed. He has horrid hair the first few eps because it's based on a manga, but then they give him an awesome hairstyle and all is right with the world), the arrogant, poorly socialized leader of F4.
She gets the red tag in her locker but she doesn't quit. In fact, she fights back against the bullying, and hits back. In doing so, she earns the interest (and then more) of Si, but of course she hates his guts.
And that is where the story goes from there. There is the story of Si learning to be a human being, and working hard (really really hard) to get her to like him (it's awesome as I started the drama hating his guts and ended up screaming at the screen for her to accept him already). There is the story of Shan-Cai learning that even though he behaves oddly, he is a good person at heart, and the story of his family from hell (the reason for his behavior) and the fact that Shan-Cai has always had a crush on Si's best friend, another member of F4, the quiet, introspective Lei (played by Vic Zhou. Hilariously, Barbie and Vic are a real life couple though they hooked up years after this drama). And the fact that Si's Mom would do anything not to have a low-class girl in the family and the fact that there all sorts of people who want to take Si down because of his previous psycho behavior.
I love the fact that Si is arrogant and strong-willed and pig-headed and so is Shan-Cai. She gives back as good as she gets and more. And there is SO much melodrama.
There is a Japanese version as well, called 'Hana Yori Dango' set in high school. I like MG better, but if you want something shorter, actually...hmmm. Maybe you should check out second season of Hana Yori Dango (HYD2) and skip the first...or not. Argh. Confusion :) The acting in Hanadan is sorta stylized, on purpose. I like it. And a lot of people like the other guy otp so :)
