I just started volume 11. Wow, Fruits Basket is amazing. It makes me both giggle and sniffle on a regular basis.
By the above, I think you figured out I haven't watched Hana Yori Dango yet. The day was so nice, that I just spent all of it outside, hanging out with Mr. Mousie and reading manga. I am watching Hanadan tonight.
But anyway, here are my further Furuba thoughts. And because I really don't want to bug everyone with lengthy ramblings,
OMG! Akito must die. He is incredibly awful. He makes my skin creep just by appearing. The bad!wrong vibe is stronger than ever. He comes to the summer house where the gang (Kyo, Yuki, Tohru, Momiji, Haru, Kisa and Hiro) are having fun at the invitation of Shigure, who is beginning to freak me out: he is clearly scheming something and I wonder what. He was also scheming with Mayu and Hatori about which more below, but I wonder what's going in his head regarding Akito. He seems to be unphased by the resident psycho but I am not feeling too charitable towards Shigure at the moment as whatever comes of it later, it hurts the characters I love presently. I love that Hatori (who I love beyond the telling of it. He is actually my RL type) tells Shigure if it hurts the kids he'll hurt him. OMG. Awesomeness. I love how Hatori is so caring and protective of the younger members of the family (he comes after Akito's visit to check that Tohru and Kyo who didn't go are OK).
But yeah, the bad!wrong vibe. There is the thing with Kureno who he brings in a pet capacity and the other family members are actually surprised he let Kureno out enough to travel and Akito basically won't even let Kureno hang out with the other members of the family (ick! Ugh). But then there is the scene with Haru (where I audibly made the kind of noise which prompted Mr. Mousie who was in the other room to go 'are you OK, what's wrong?') where he is sort of touching him in a creepy, intimate manner, while trying to do his usual 'you are worthless' routine (classic abuser trick btw) and I sort of had to put the manga down for a bit (which is why I am typing this out), because OMG! You do not mess with Haru (who, OMG, even when going to Akito's was worrying not about himself but about what seeing Akito would do to Yuki). Oh God, you do not mess with Haru. *sees red*
I think Kyo is so incredibly lucky that because he is the cat, he is not invited. And of course, that means he gets to hang out with Tohru which is shippy awesome.
And then there is of course the fact that we find out how he was with Yuki when Yuki was a kid. He would lock him up in a dark room (OMG! My hate for Akito has no bounds. I don't care what his reasons are, or what his childhood trauma is, or anything. meganbmoore, I have never felt such instinctive hate towards a manga character before. You do not mistreat children, you do not!) and Yuki would be all alone, and his parents wouldn't come, and his older brother wouldn't come, but Akito would come and tell him horrible things: how hope and joy etc etc are not for him and all sorts of other things. Every freaking day. HATE. But meeting Akito this time (and Akito trying his old tricks) clarified something for Yuki. Akito was wrong. He has Tohru who came into the darkness. I love how he watches Tohru tucking the little ones to bed. I really get the sense that his love for her is his displacement for a want of a mother figure, he loves her like the Mom he should have had (very Wendy and the Lost Boys). I don't think he's figured that out yet, so we get the awesome scene on the beach where he tells her he loves her, and tells her about the hat (and how wonderful it felt to be a necessity) and that is such an awesome scene.
Other awesome things? Kyo and Tohru. I am shipping them like mad. I love how they are on the beach, and Kyo doesn't like swimming (I guess because he is the cat :D) and Tohru is swimming and she is not figuring out how to hold her breath and you see Kyo just automatically wade in (to help) and it's awesome and cute (and he is still in his clothes, LOL) and she is all apologetic because she made him come in and he grins and is 'you want fun?' and starts spinning her in that inflatable thing (OMG! My cuteness meter is broken) and Momiji is there too and the three of them are playing (btw, by that point, I think everyone, Yuki included is crystal clear on how Kyo feels about Tohru but I think the OTP themselves are the only ones left out :D I love how she's so mellowed Kyo out. He is nowhere nea threatening Momiji or getting irritated or anything, but is actually being laid back fun with him. OMG OMG.
Another thing I love? How incredibly attuned he is to her. I love how he notices Hiro must have said something to her (btw, why does she have no pic of her Dad?) even though the only sign is her slightly different behavior and no one else has noticed anything different. And then later, he is even more certain so he asks her if Hiro said something and OMG he figures out it was something about her Mom just by the round-about way she asks about his parents (because, being Tohru, she is worried that bringing up her Mom all the time in front of the Sohma kids, when she doesn't know their family situation, might have been hurtful). And I love how he tells her that he is estranged from his Dad and hasn't seen him for years and pauses and tells her about how his Mom died in an accident (because he can't tell even her she killed herself because she couldn't bear to have him as a son). And he is so matter of fact about something this FUBAR. And then he tells her her Mom has nothing to do with their parents and she shouldn't worry. And he prods her until she does tell the story she wanted to tell earlier (when the whole bunch was there and she consored it) and when she hesistates to finish at the end to say she had fun with mom, he does for her 'it was fun.' Eeeee, omg he is so gentle with her. *dies*
I dread to see how Akito is going to mess it up.
What else? OMG. Hatori. HATORI. I am such a Hatori/Mayu shipper now. I love that story, told from Mayu's point of view. How she was best friends with Kana and met Hatori that way, and fell in love with him at first sight, but of course wouldn't say anything (but Shigure noticed) and she got to be friends with Hatori. And we see the way Hatori was: happy and relaxed (I wonder if he is extra protective of Tohru because Kana was a little like her). And Mayu held onto their happiness, because she wanted to be so happy so they would be unreachable for her. And then of course Akito happened and it was the end.
And it's been over two years since she's seen Hatori, but OMG she still loves him (that flashback scene where newly-viped memory Kana is cheerily telling Mayu she (Mayu) should be with Hatori, such a contrast to Kana who was weeping because Hatori got hurt so badly because of her). And I love how Shigure schemes to have Hatori come into the bookshop. And he has to come back for the book the next day and OMG he comes not in a suit and she asks him why he is not in a suit today and he says he didn't want to make her hot (the first day he came in a suit and she joked it makes her hot just to look at him).
And the most amazing awesome scene follows. Because she thinks he has a new gf (Shigure lied) but he looks so unhappy and she can't help it, she has this amazing outburst about how she wants him to be happy, and Mayu is so outspoken and passionate (and I get the sense, she is strong unlike Kana was, she won't break) and then she ends up sobbing into his shoulder at the end she is so horrified and she apologizes and he tells her (and I died) that it's OK because now she's cried instead of him.
*dies*

And then she finds out he doesn't have a gf (because she is all 'why am I crying for you? You have a gf, let her cry for you' and he tells her he doesn't have one so she is 'give me back my tears!' and there is laughing).
And he actually asks her to go for dinner. And there is teasing and adorableness.
Before this, I would have shipped Hatori with Mayu because I wanted Hatori happy and if being with anyone would have made him happy, I wouldn't have cared who it was. But after this, I am shipping the two of them, because I think they'll be awesome together and because I also really love Mayu.
And I love how Shigure tells her that since it's Hatori, she'll have to be very patient but if she waited for two years, she should be OK with it. And the story concludes with her saying it wasn't five years (as Shigure joked) but it was some time until she cut her hair, and he started calling her just 'Mayu' again, and they would go out when the weather was nice.

P.S. How much do I hate the creepy servant (?) of Akito's who is all (to Hatori) 'you shouldn't be so thoughtless and go out so much, when Akito depends so much on you.' Lady, the psycho blinded him in one eye and drove the girl he loved almost insane. Chill with 'you ingrate,' OK, bitch?

It's the fact that if he had any idea of how Akito treats her students(and Shigure and Hatori) she would literally kill him. So would Uo.

So, I think someone should inform her! I get the sense she doesn't know what happened with Akito and Hatori (or Akito would find his throat slit).
Re: Shigure. I get the sense that he is perhaps the one person not afraid of Akito. He is very 'his own thing.' In his eccentric fashion he is pretty immovable. (I think even Kureno, even though he cares for Akito is scared of him).

Yeah, so, Shigure should have his head examined as far as romantic intentions.
Akito? It adds to the "I'd feel sympathy for you if you weren't so wretched" but I think it makes the actual actions and treatment worse.
Beyond that, I just made sure various pairings skipped off happily into OTP togetherness land.
