Swallow the Sun - ep 17-18

dangermousieEveryone, I apologize for the delay. Miss Short Attention Span got sidetracked. In rl, I am on ep 21 now but need to upload ep 19-21 caps so have the summary for eps 17-18 here.
When we finished with ep 16, Jung Woo has hit rock-bottom of angst. Let's see if he digs himself out.
Clearly, not so much!
Jung Woo overhears Mob Boss tell his son that he is only using Jung Woo to take over the casino because JW is so capable so Rich Kid shouldn't feel jealous. Yeah, keep digging your grave, daddy.
Little flashback to Mob Boss and JW's Mom. Awww, I could have watched a drama about them! Accidentally Mob Daddy finds out Mom had a son and now he is quite anxious to find the guy, to verify whether it's actually his kid. Oh, if you only knew. Meanwhile JW stands there silently menacing in the background. What a dysfunctional family!
Heroine gave up her Cirque job and is now teaching on Jeju - she is thwarted in her desire for justice for her parents' death (after the Cop died, investigation stopped) and she keeps thinking to Jung Woo suffering so. She is sort of going off the rails herself.
Did I mention how much I like competent, sane Gangsta Girl? She may like Jung Woo but she isn't going to act like a rabid hyena over it.
OMG! Su Hyun is here!
She tells him she saw him at the funeral and that she found out why he was working for Mob Boss and she wants him to stop with his revenge against his own father but he says he can't. And he means it - he is driven beyond reason by now - he did so much he can't stop or it would all be meaningless.
Visiting cop's widow. She doesn't want him to come again as he worked for Mob Boss.
Have more emo face!
Guess who these gents find in Jackson's office! That's right, the guy who swindled them in Africa!
Amy gives Jung Woo some excellent advice about trying to salvage his relationship with Su Hyun but our poor emo boy is too far gone. (Ahhh, Amy, now if you could only fix your own relationship with sexy idiot Jackson too!)
Yup, like their interaction.
Former friends bring JW over on Jackson's request to meet everyone's fave gay mercenary.
After JW punches him out, things settle down. To the repentant offer of going back to Africa for every luxury ever (king they guarded is back on the throne authorized this), JW yells 'can you return my relationship with SH to me?' which I think is rather unfair - nobody made him break up with her, just his messed-up/revenge plot. Unless he was going to just be rich and forget about revenge.
They all end up getting drunk together anyway. Ahhh, men,
Elsewhere, Rich Kid does not understand the meaning of 'fuck off' no matter how many times it's repeated.
After the hang-out is done, Jackson and JW continue drinking elsewhere and JW opens up a bit to Jackson, revealing he is in it for revenge on Mob Boss who is his father and coming up with plan which will achieve both that and Jackson's goal of protecting the casino. jackson is awesome both because he agrees and trusts JW despite earlier stuff and because he tells JW if he double-crosses him now, he will be toast.
So pretty!
Mob Boss discovers JW in tears in front of his Mom's portrait. Thinking fast, JW flatters the Mob Boss by saying it was this amazing painting that got him so moved (clearly not the time for 'Hi, I am your and her kid and have come for my revenge!' moment).
Side note - Mob Boss, you know you have a long-lost son, use your neurons!
There is also this awesome scene where JW needs to get some stock (as part of Mob Boss' takeover plan) from a mobster and I love how unimpressed he is.
Ooooh, triangle. And SH asking Rich Boy if he'd like JW as a brother (careful, you are close to revealing his secret, girl! But she is kinda snapping herself)
Mobster flunkie finally figured out that JW is Mob Boss's son. After a beatdown (flunkie is pissed off being used in revenge scheme) he actually agrees to go along.
Poor angsty darling!
He meets her and this really angsty scene follows. She asks him, steel and destruction in her voice how his father would feel if she told him JW is his son and is trying to achieve revenge. That would be a great way to avenge her parents. JW is horrified - not so much at the threat but at the fact that she has become as fractured and tormented as he has. I think it was to protect her happiness that he broke up with her, so as not to drag her in, but she has been dragged in anyway. And what he sees is a twisted mirror of his own soul, his own torment. Ouch. She adds that she won't do it, because she wants Mob Boss brought low first and asks to be in at the kill. Oh, how guilty and tormented JW must be. Ouch, my darlings.
You dragged her in the muck with you after all. I bet that is what JW thinks but it's not true - he should have listened when SH told him not to put her on a pedestal and that she hasn't always been the pure and good SH he thought her. Deaths of her parents make her crave revenge - that is natural. But I hope seeing someone you love more than life spiralling down that dark path and what it looks like will be a wake-up call for you to stop. Both of you. (Btw I do think if you stopped when she asked you to, she would have too - she would have had something to have in her life instead of revenge - love).
