Story Title: Optimist
Rating: PG at most
Plot: Dee's reaction to the events of KLG2 (i.e. spoilers through S1 finale)

Dee is an optimist. She is watching Commander Adama lying in the slowly spreading viscous red pool, shot three times by Boomer point-blank. Her world is bright and loud, and in her nostrils is the sharp blood smell. But it will all turn out fine if she can just hold on, will life into the Commander through the pressure of her hands.

President Roslin is in the Brig. Her putative boyfriend is alive, dead, wounded, unknown? Their shiny new CAG is handcuffed, screaming over the body of his father, and the CIC is chaos. It is fifty-five days after the destruction of her world and the death of her family. And all she can think of is “If I hold his hand, he will be fine.” The world is ending, again.

She hears a low noise through the pounding of her heart and is almost startled out of her circle of motion. Lee Adama has sprung for Boomer. There is no sanity left on his face, no control. His face is inhuman in the purity of rage. He is fast and it takes the Marines a few seconds to drag him off her. He can’t do much damage because of his handcuffs, anyway. But his hands have left wet red smears on Boomer’s throat, her shell-shocked, porcelain face. He rages, utterly incoherent, a moment or two more. The he looks at his father, breathes in, gulp after gulp after gulp and subsides, as suddenly as he started. As she watches, never stopping her hand patterns, complicated figure-eights and alternations of pressure and stroke, he pieces back the shattered mask of his control. But it has been broken too thoroughly and the cracks show, hard.

Boomer stares straight ahead. She has made no motion since the shots. She did not move when men sprung around her, dragging her down on the ground. She did not defend herself when Lee smeared her face with Commander’s blood. She is not moving now, when Marines surround her, protective and hostile. Looking at her, Dee increases the pressure of her hands, willing life into the Commander, her face as fiercely unseeing as that of Lt. Sharon Valerii, traitor. She is holding Adama’s hands and knows he will live. As long as she holds Adama’s hand, he will be all right. She knows that. She is as sure of this as she is sure of the existence of the Gods.

She filters the slow resumption of order as Col. Tigh takes control. The doctor is here and Tigh is at her shoulder. They want her to let go of Adama’s hand. She doesn’t think she should. The Government (or what is left of it) has toppled. Billy might be dead. Her family is dead. It is fifty-five days after the end of her world. But as long as she holds Adama’s hand, she knows she will be all right. She is an optimist.
