Dunkin Donut
Nov. 10th, 2005 12:22 pmI've discovered (to my utter surprise and consternation :P) that I actually don't mind Duncan any more. For the last couple of episodes, I've actually even found him likeable. I don't even mind him and Veronica together for now, as long as she ends up with Logan of course.
I mean, he is rich, and good-looking in a bland kind of way, and he certainly has an excellent taste in Best Friends and Girlfriends, as well as doing high-schooly things and letting Logan move in. If you don't push him with crises, he seems normally affectionate as well, if nothing out of the ordinary. I mean, I would much rather Veronica was candoodling with Logan, thus saving his troubled soul blah blah blah (or just having hot sex instead), but I can't blame Donut for Veronica's inexplicable preferences, can I?
I still think that Veronica and Duncan are majorly incompatible, and I do think his fashion sense is nonexistent (yes, Logan, I know your clothes probably burned down with your house, but you can afford to buy more. Borrowing clothes from Duncan, even if it did get you a full-body hug from Veronica, is not a viable long-term strategy, not when those clothes include argyle, diamond-patterned sweaters not to be worn by anyone under 65 on pain of decapitation), but he could be worse.

Date: 2005-11-10 05:32 pm (UTC)And here I thought I was the only one! ;) Ever since Blast from the Past...I actually warmed to him and Veronica at the dance; they looked happy together and for the first time he didn't bother me.
Hmmm.

Date: 2005-11-10 06:49 pm (UTC)But I do think that the Veronica/Duncan issue needs to be settled or else it would always be the unfinished sentence for Veronica.
Then she can move on to the LoVin'.
I have a hard time actually with the level of character assassination I see of Duncan sometimes in fanfic. I mean, while batshit!duncan is interesting and people are plainly free to think that TD's acting is not to their taste or whatever, it always seems weird to me when people bend him severely OOC into this bad bad baddie.

Date: 2005-11-10 06:57 pm (UTC)And I am glad V gets to put the V/D matter to rest, rather than always wondering about the "what might have been."
Heee, icon!

Date: 2005-11-10 06:58 pm (UTC)That being said, I totally agree. I've moved on from: not really caring (and wishing I did because I *want* to care about everyone in the show) to really warming to him in those 'oops I forgot homecoming' and 'logan I want to wax your ass' scenes. He can be pretty adorable at times. Of course the fact that it's all going well and the fact that Veronica totally trusts him spells DOOM. Doom I tell you!

Date: 2005-11-10 07:00 pm (UTC)Duncan could have been an amazingly angsty, fascinating character but I think the writers' changed tack and TD's less than stellar charisma resulted instead in the Donut of today.
I do agree that he is much better with Logan than Veronica and hey, can't wait for whatever ax is about to fall!

Date: 2005-11-10 07:04 pm (UTC)It makes me sad though, because the potential fuckedupedness of her dating the guy that used to think he was her brother/quasi-raped her is just awesome. I still hold out blind hope that the shit will all hit the fan...
*cackles evilly* How I look foreword to the doom...

Guuuuh, I want to see some L/V already!

Date: 2005-11-10 07:12 pm (UTC)I agree and I really don't like it. I'm a shipper girl but not to the expense of the other characters.
It's kind of like how I also don't like "Spike is perfect and Angel is the lamest guy ever" fanfics either.

That's insane. Riley was far too er, (what's a nice word for "bland"?) to be Satan Junior.
Basically, it's possible to write shipper fic that isn't about bashing everyone not part of the ship. Blar.

Date: 2005-11-10 07:23 pm (UTC)The worse example of destroying one ship to build up another was a Phantom of the Opera fic where Raoul turned into a rapist who abandoned and cheated on Christine and beat her. Yeah right.

Date: 2005-11-10 07:29 pm (UTC)I am not joking, I am sitting here with my mouth slightly open. Um. Um. Ummmmm...
Even if you don't like the guy, that is about the LAST thing the kid would do. He's got plenty of flaws you can way exaggerate for implausible fic, but this?
ARGH! *primal scream of rage!*
ARGH!!!! *suppresses rant about how he proved he'd literally rather die than hurt her*

Date: 2005-11-10 07:33 pm (UTC)As you know, I'm not against UC, but I'm always against character bashing (except a smidgeon of Tess but even then I'd rather just not hear about her boring ass).

Date: 2005-11-10 07:37 pm (UTC)The thing is, I have much less problem with taking a character's traits and exaggerating them (Max's control issues, Duncan's passivity, Xander's judgmental streak or something else of that nature) than inventing traits completely opposite of those a character possesses. The former results in bad fic. The latter results in fic that could be used as an instrument of torture.

Hmmmm, we always do seem to end up having these long ass exchanges don't we?

Date: 2005-11-10 09:42 pm (UTC)Still, I put argyle in the category of Lacoste polo shirts. I think guys look adorable in them, but I find it impossible to take them seriously. Really, you can't be ghetto in a polo shirt with an alligator on it, as hard as you try.

Date: 2005-11-12 12:20 am (UTC)The idea of a guy who's dating someone he raped while thinking she was his sister and then having them try to ignore all of that is wonderfully fucked up, but the execution of it is not as great as it could be. But those issues aside, Duncan doesn't bother me. It's fun to mock him. :P And with Logan moved in to Duncan's suite, I can see tensions mounting...

Date: 2005-11-12 03:50 am (UTC)Heeee. The possibilities. And I am sure that while Logan moved in with Duncan largely because he's lonely, I am sure the temptation ot inrerrupt VD is part of his decision :)
