Saw it on Sunday. Loathed it. Haven't hated a movie this much in years: violence is OK, so is nudity. But violence and nudity without any point: ugh. The visuals are neat for about 5 minutes, but not enough to make up for two hours of boredom. On the plus side, unlike in Sky Captain, another entirely-CGI sets extravaganza, the actors here all act very well.

Oh, and I don't think I'll ever be able to watch Elijah Wood in anything else again. Well, not really, but talk about anti-Frodo. Eeeek!

:-D And my other friends loved it and called it a "perfect" movie.

I think it's one of those movies that either appeals to you a lot or doesn't at all. Tarentino movies tend to be like that too. I normally loathe them just because I don't like Tarentino at all, but I fell into middle ground with Kill Bill. I was able to say "eh, that was pretty good even though I LOATHE HIM".

Be very very afraid. They might have only liked it because they were taking tips from Kevin and are planning to cook you for dinner.

I don't like Tarantino and I stay away from his movies. However, I did like Rondriquez' Mariachi trilogy and Spy Kids wasn't bad, so I thought this might be OK. Ugh. Was wrong. 2D characters, cliche plots, clunky dialogue.

The anti-feminist stance of this movie also had me bemused: all the women are whores who are prey and need protectors. Even Rosario Dawson's Gail (the strongest female) needs Owen's Dwight to rescue her. And the others are all quivering victims.

The anti-feminist stand point stems from film noir, which the comic was a send up to.

True. But the women in film noire were often tough, and here a lot of them are not.

Personally, I loved it. I knew there was no point, but I liked the seperate stories, I loved the characters, the visuals, the blood, gore, everything. Then again, I loved Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2.

I'm not sure whether I should see this movie or not. I hate Pulp Fiction, but loved Kill Bill. How does it compare to Fight Club? (if you've seen it) That movie is my standard for too much useless violence and sex.

All I know is that there is "I KEEL U BIATCH!" Elijah in Sin City. And hookers with guns and swords.

ROFL. More like "I keel and eet u and get keeled in uber-grusum way" Elijah.

It's less funny than Pulp fiction (which I don't like) but I haven't seen Kill Bill.

I actually like Fight Club, because it had an interesting story and a point to it all, but I think Sin City is more violent. Only it being in black and white and some scenes in silouette keeps it from NC-17. Basically, if you don't want to see either someone ripping off a guy's penis with his hands or tying a man with arms/legs chopped off to a tree to have a wolf eat him, stay away.

O... kay. Stylized violence is cool, but sometimes too much is too much. I think I'll skip this one, kthxbye.

*shudders violently* I'm really creeped out that so many people love this movie so much from what I've read...and from what I see in your comments. Ugh. What purpose do films like this serve? Gratuitous violence and nudity lend us...nothing.

Well, I saw it by myself and I was the only woman in the audience who wasn't with a guy. So maybe we are not the target audience? Who knows...

I tend to suspect you're right about that...But it disturbs me a bit that anyone is the target audience for a movie like this.

Hey, there are people who liked Passion of the Christ. So the fact that some people somewhere liked it, is still not enough to convince me of anything :)

Not trying to convince ya--I refused to see it with you for a reason, no? :-)

And of course you didn't like "The Passion." You're a messiah-murdering jew, 'member? ;-)

Yeah, and a woman who is OK with birth control as well, and thus going straight to Hell.

I am sure some women liked SC. Just like there must be some men who liked The Wedding Date. But I don't think they were the target demographic. All the nude women and no shirtless (even) men are testimony to that.
