This is somewhat inspired by [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear shall/will post.

Are there any words you especially like? Not because they convey cool concepts (kittens, love, cash) but because of the way they sound.

Hmmmm, if I have to come up with mine:

malodorous: It's that very first strong "o." True, the word 'odor' has it too, but it's too short to support the weight of it.

lumps: because 'ump' sounds bouncy

parallelogram: because keeping all those 'l's and 'r's in the right order is a trick. I always want to say 'pararrelerelgram' or similar

boink: How can you not like that?

verdant: is sounds so pleasant and a bit starchy, like a Victorian old lady out for tea.

Do you have any of yours?

This post brought to you by lack of sleep.

Narcissistic: talk about keeping track of the sounds!

Pulchritudinous

Aesthetic: yeah, yeah, I'm rolling my eyes first.

Words of the English Language That Rock So Hard
  1. hubbub The b's have it.

  2. silhouette It's just such a pretty word. Many words that end in -ette are pretty, but the 'h' sound lends 'silhouette' a breathiness which is just... ooh.

  3. sated I maintain that this word needs to be used much more often.

  4. awkward This is one of my favorite words ever. Why? Because it means the same thing it sounds like. What could be more awkward than awkward itself? It's the k stuck between the w's that does it.

  5. awesome Just as nothing could be more awkward than 'awkward', nothing can be more awesome than 'awesome'. In danger of overuse, though, I'm afraid. Use sparingly, and only if something truly is "awesome".

  6. callipygian If anyone ever asks you to describe me in a word, this is the word you want. I like words with Greek origins that have retained that classical feel to them.

  7. defenestrate This word makes me love the English language. We have a word for the specific act of throwing something out the window? AWESOME.

  8. ass Ass is probably my favorite word in any language. It is just so multi-purpose!

  9. stromboli This word just sounds funny, you know?

  10. polyglot "Glot". WHEEE.

  11. ursine I actually have a thing for words that come from Latin animal names, such as this and bovine, vulpine, lupine, canine, feline, porcine, etc.

  12. beget It just amuses me. Be + get = babymaking!

  13. vendetta I liked this word before I saw V for Vendetta just because I thought it was pretty and darkly sexy. The movie proves my point and justifies my love for the word.

  14. timber This might just be the synaesthesia speaking, but this word smells like wood to me, which is just right (it rarely happens that the senses match up so perfectly for me). It's very pleasant, very comforting.

  15. choler Also anger, rage, fury. I like words that illustrate the concept of being absolutely livid. They're good times! Also they are muchly what I am, sometimes, I think.

  16. yeoman Say it with me: yeoman! Yeoman! YEOMAN!

  17. attrition Like sated, this one needs to be used more often in real life.

  18. turmeric I really like lilting r sounds. They make speaking sound more gentle, or something.

  19. papoose Best name for a baby I ever heard. The p's and the 'ooooo' sound just seem more suited to an infant than most other words.

  20. pantaloons Double o's are funny, and so is the word 'pants', so when you put them together, you've got comedy gold, or at least as close as you get to comedy gold when you read the dictionary for fun.

  21. snog This word just seems so much better suited to the act of making out than the phrase 'make out' does. I really heart British slang, actually, but then, maybe I've been a bit too immersed in Harry Potter original character role playing again.

  22. dirigible I like that this word is spelled with all i's except for that silent e at the end. I really think lowercase i's are one of the prettiest letters, even if dotting them when writing by hand can be a nuisance. I'll usually think a word with more i's looks better aesthetically than a word with e's or a's.

  23. turtle This is a cute word; the 'rtl' just really amuses me, tickles me pink for some reason.

  24. foible This word is just so perfect for what it describes - a flaw. And yet, it impresses people when you use it, because people don't use it enough! Why does 'awesome' get abused and not 'foible'! Oh, how I moil with indignity over that.

  25. superfluous i.e. what my list of words may be.

In other news, I really hate the word "lump", because it makes me think of things you don't want to find on your breasts. Also, the Black-Eyed Peas only made the word even less attractive. And I don't think 'verdant' sounds starchy at all! Rather it's very rich and lush and definitely green, like a healthy meadow of grass and daisies in April.

I like the 'mb' sound - so womb and tomb are good. Nice warm deep sounds. I also like the word scrupulous because it sounds so scrunchy.

I also like saying blossom again and again to myself - it looses all meaning!

You, know fine's not so impressive.;P

Uh. Knew you'd say liquid. In fact, being around you has so convinced me that "liquid" is a cool word that I almost wrote it down, before remember that, wait, I don't really it that much, it's Katrine.
