Movies seen and not seen

katranna trip to see Lucky on Sunday and thus revel in Bollywood melodrama set in the Russian steppes (or something. Doesn't it sound like a blurb) got cut short by the simple fact that the inconsiderate production company did not send over a print with subtitles. We would have no problem with the Russian, but her Hindi being nonexistant and mine limited to passionate confessions of love or discussions of family honor, the movie was not to be. It looks like I'll have to wait till DVD to see Salman Khan romancing schoolgirls in the snow.
On a brighter note, I and Julia saw and thoroughly enjoyed Sahara. It's implausible (an ironclad in the middle of the desert), improbable(taking out an army of baddies with just three people), and probably offended the people of Mali (who have a peaceful stable government instead of being ruled by a megalomaniac with a gun fetish) but it was thoroughly glorious, silly popcorn fun. It has also the distinction of being the only movie where I found Mathew M. remotely attractive. Look at the definition on that boy! I guess between playing drums naked and stoned, he found some time for the gym.
The plot switches between finding the source of a plague, finding a lost ship, and thwarting an evil Frenchman but the fun is pretty constant. The love story is extremely tacked on. If you can call it a love story. It's pretty clearly "he/she is cute and available so why not have a meaningless fun fling" Which is OK. Ordinarily I'd view the proceedings as too Bondian for my liking, but Pitt and Al are just having too much fun and are genuinly both "gee-whiz" and stoned (hey, it's Matthew M after all) to be annoying, instead of likeable. Oh, and I got to see KoH trailer on a TV out front. Wanna see it now!
I love predictability in my movies. As soon as Penelope Cruz's doctor (who needs a meal or ten) was the one to go down the well, I knew the rest would get killed.
