They borrowed this feature from DW where cuts behave in this way and have since soon after the launch. However, I'm not sure that they implemented it as well as DW - maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see the "close" arrow here on LJ which the cuts all have on DW.
I also blog on WordPress - it's a fine platform. What it lacks that LJ has is the community of users and the easy aggregation of the friends-list for the same. All of the WP blogs that I follow I follow via a RSS reader - I can't scroll back through that with half the easy of LJ or DW reading!
