Movie as Color: Moulin Rouge

dangermousieWatching Robots today made me think of another movie that has little in common with it. Yeah, brain is strange.
That movie is Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge, one of my favorite movies of the past 10 years. Never mind that the story is a simplified cross between "Camille" and "La Boheme." Never mind that the lyrics are cliche and the characters (a naive young lover, a prostitute redeemed by love, an evil rich bastard) are archetypes. Never mind the fact that Lautrec's character has nothing in common with the historical counterpart. Never mind even the fact that I don't like Nicole Kidman. I love this movie because somehow, the super-saturated emotion of it works. You feel the joy, the despair, the romance, and when the camera finally stops going like it's on speed, even the overwhelming beauty of MR's world. BL gets the images and the voices work for him and somehow it all fits together. When the petals covered Christian sobbing over the dead Satine in his arms, I cried. Not as much for the sadness of the scene (though it was very sad) but for the sheer perfect artistic beauty of it. Also, "Roxanne" staging is absolutely brilliant, the climax really emotional, and Ewan McGregor ain't bad either. Oh, and I wore out "come What May" on my CD or nearly.
