My Baek Dong Soo dilemma
Jul. 26th, 2011 09:02 amSo, I finished ep 5 and I have a dilemma.

I vastly prefer the guy on the right to the guy on the left. One issue. On the left, is our protagonist, Baek Dong Soo. On the right is our eventual antagonist and future ruthless killer Yeo Woon.

Yet, I am Team Dude On the Right.
The thing is, for one, while neither of these guys does it for me on a hormonal level (too young!), Yoo Seung Ho is a much better actor than Ji Chang Wook. Also, while I don't hate him, Dong Soo is very much not my character type - loud, immature but good-hearted and with a heroic destiny really is not my bag. Now, Yeo Woon has been cursed from birth to be a bloody assassin and thus was brought up in psycho fashion and just overall has an interesting character arc, being on the good guys' side for now.
While we are on heresies, this lady is awesome:

I want her with Dong Soo instead of him hooking up with noble lady:

It helps that I ship Noble Lady with Assassin.

This drama is making me go to uncanonical hell.
You do NOT want to know what I had to do to crosspost this + copied my dw post manually on my bberry and posted this way. Yikes.

Date: 2011-07-26 04:05 pm (UTC)See, this is why I'm not watching this drama. I watched the first episode and then went online to find out more about it. When I saw that there would be an angsty and tortured assassin and that he wouldn't be the hero, well.....I kind of lost interest in it (+ I like the actor who plays Yeo Woon, mostly because I've seen him in QSD before, and so I wanted him to be the lead). This will be like Emperor of the Sea all over again. I'll keep following the recaps on the net just in case the writers pull a Bidam on us but I'm not holding my breath. The goody-two-shoes hero is of 0 interest to me. If there's enough assassin goodness, I might watch his scenes and fww through the rest. I'm still downloading the episodes and the subs as they come out, just in case. Uncanon shipping does lead to hell unfortunately.
I'm taking advantage of this post to write the replies to other posts I wanted to send but couldn't because of the big LJFail yesterday.
So, yeah, I might just eat my words and watch Heartstring after all. Only from episode 7 though, there's no way I'm watching 6 hours of Shin pining after weepy ballerina. I'm still kind of on the fence though. I read that with PSH's accident the writers had to chage the plot and make her character sick for the next few episodes so I want to see how it turns out before going ahead.
The first episode of Princess' Man is available at DM. I caved in when it still read 75% and even watched parts of the second episode raw. I liked it. I got fooled by the opening scene though. It's only after I went online to do some research that I understood it's a scene that happens mi-drama (or earlier) and not how it ends. It's not as gorgeous as Chuno and the OST isn't really my thing so far but it shows great promise. We'll see how it goes. It might end up being a frustrating drama to watch if the subs don't come out fast enough or regularly enough though. The viki channel is still down from what I understand. It might end up being like The Duo and not get a big following online because of the lack of good subs available. Discussing dramas as they air with online friends is part of what I like so much about Kdramas. *crossing fingers that we'll get subs fast. I think this drama is goign to be sooooo good*
On another note, I finished Que Sera Sera. Is it me or Eric is even hotter in the last episodes? Something about his face. His despair and angst maybe? So, I really liked it, but not liked it liked it if you know what I mean. I loved the concept but the execution felt off enough in some places that I could never get into the drama 100%. Plus I kind of liked the secondary leads more than the main couple (as characters in their own right, not as a couple). I'm glad I watched it because it was different and gave me some scenes that blew me away. But in the end, I liked parts of it more than the whole. It's the first time that happens to me, it's weird.

Date: 2011-07-26 05:03 pm (UTC)Viki is releasing softsubs for Princess Man and subs for first two eps are already out at soompi. So I don't think it will be an issue.
Aww, I still rooted for main otp in QSS. :)
Re: Heartstrings. I wouldn't worry. They didn't diminish her time, just stuck her in wheelchair a bit so it's shippiness plus h/c!!!

Btw...it's not funny watching two dramas live and waiting for subs. :p ;)

Date: 2011-07-26 08:31 pm (UTC)I've just downloaded the latest Warrior BDS episodes. If YW has as much screentime as the titular hero, I'm all for watching it. Plus isn't this drama supposed to be only 16 episodes? If Ji Sun (I asume that's the noble lady?) is still crushing on YW when the drama has just reached its mid point, it would be awkward to have her switch gears.
Ok, off to Soompi to look for subs then. I was going to watch episode 5 of Myung Wol with partially done subs (because I checked some parts raw already and this episode is GREAT and I want it NOW). Watching Princess' Man will occupy me 2 hours and the MY's subs will be closer to being completed.

Date: 2011-07-26 09:01 pm (UTC)If you want to check out grown-up YW, start with ep 6 and I can fill you on his super-dysfunctional abusive backstory if you like. Mmmmmm. Btw, WBDS is 24 eps but still, it is weird to switch otps (as he's smitten with Lady and was since they were childern, though he doesn't know it's the same person). Besides, I am sure hero's eventual otp is the robber girl - she's the bigger star and was his childhood otp.
I am dyiiiiing for more Myung Wol.

Date: 2011-07-26 09:38 pm (UTC)I agree, YSH is miles better than JCW. I believe he picked to play his character as mpre interesting though.

Date: 2011-07-26 10:54 pm (UTC)Also, regarding the Yeo Un=Ho Gae discussion...I actually think it's inverted? Ho Gae started out good and Dam Duk's friend (or at least, they wanted to be friends) then got darker due to tragedy, with his adolescence/early adulthood encouraging that in him. Yeo Un starts out dark because of tragedy/bad upbringing and starts not liking Dong Soo, but has developed some degree of attachment to him (I kinda suspect only him, and maybe Sa Mo, though? I suspect he's tried to remain detached in general, and not just because of the assassin bit) and has spent his adolescence and early adulthood encouraged to be good and honorable, and aside from trying to stop Cheon from hurting Dong Soo (which Cheon kinda turned into a really nasty lesson) he hasn't really been forced to choose between the two yet.
With shipping, I'm wondering if this is Avatar style marketting? Nickelodeon put together trailers and ads that encouraged the idea of the heroine and the antihero, yet the show only had them interact I think 3 times in the first 2 1/2 season, and was strongly Heroine/Hero the whole series.

Date: 2011-07-26 11:04 pm (UTC)Btw, I got to the scene I think you meant - when Ji Sun gets a bow and arrow out. I loved it!!!!
Re: marketing. That is what makes the most sense to me now, tbh. I can see Yeo Un/Ji Sun not being endgame tbh more than DS/JJ not being endgame. Honestly.
Re: YU as Ho Gae. Yeah, but I am assuming he'll go bad eventually and then redeem himself at the end or die tragically, and love for woman who loves hero will be part of his darkness kick. But we'll see. Either way, I am a sucker for antihero with devoted love for a kickass woman.

Date: 2011-07-26 11:05 pm (UTC)I hope you're right about the OTPs!
I've juste finished the first two episodes of PM and it's SO good with proper subs! You can see the angst and the pain coming from a mile away and this is going to hurt so good! Can't wait to read your impressions.
Gah, the subs for MY are only at 66%. I think I'll wait until tomorrow then. I really want to watch episode 5 but I know it'll be too frustrating when the subs switch to some gibberish midway through the episode.

Yeah, I can't deal with bad subs. I'd rather have no subs at all.

Date: 2011-07-27 12:57 am (UTC)I loved that she was pretty much psycho enough to scare JJ (who is rational). She didn't even let go after they left until YU actually lowered it for her and she snapped out of it.
